if a man cannot gaze at a very small element because of its excessive heat and power, how much more can a mortal man not look upon the glory of God, which is inexpressible? For just as a pomegranate, having a rind that contains it, has within many compartments and cells separated by membranes and has many seeds dwelling in it, so the whole creation is contained by the spirit of God, and the spirit which contains it, along with the creation, is contained by the hand of God. Therefore, just as the seed of the pomegranate dwelling inside cannot see what is outside the peel, being itself inside, so also a man, being contained with all creation by the hand of God, cannot behold God. Then an earthly king is believed to exist, although not seen by all, but is known through his laws and ordinances and authorities and powers and images. But you, do you not wish God to be known through his works and powers? Consider, O man, his works: the change of seasons in their times and the turning of the winds, the well-ordered course of the elements, the well-ordered procession of days and nights and months and years, the diverse beauty of seeds and plants and fruits, the manifold generation of four-footed beasts and birds and reptiles and swimming creatures, both of fresh and salt water, or the intelligence given to the animals themselves for begetting and nourishing, not for their own use, but for man to have, and the providence which God exercises in preparing food for all flesh, or the subjection which he has ordained for all things to be subject to humanity, the flowing of sweet springs and ever-flowing rivers, the timely supply of dews and showers and rains, the manifold motion of the heavenly bodies, the Morning Star rising and signifying the coming of the perfect luminary, the bond of the Pleiades and Orion, Arcturus and the chorus of the other stars that takes place in the circle of the heaven, to all of which the manifold wisdom of God has given their own names. This is the only God who made light out of darkness, who brought forth light from his treasures, the storehouses of the south wind and the treasures of the deep and the boundaries of the seas, the treasures of snow and hail, gathering waters in the treasures of the deep and gathering the darkness in his treasures and bringing forth the sweet and desirable and delightful light from his treasures, drawing up clouds from the end of the earth and multiplying lightnings for the rain, who sends the thunder for fear and foretells the crash of the thunder by the lightning, so that the soul, being suddenly disturbed, may not expire, but who also measures out the sufficiency of the lightning coming down from the heavens so that it does not burn up the earth; for if the lightning were to have full power, it would burn up the earth, and if the thunder, it would destroy the things in it. This is my God, the Lord of all, who alone stretched out the heaven and established the breadth of the earth beneath, who stirs up the depth of the sea and makes its waves roar, who

ἐλαχίστῳ ὄντι στοιχείῳ οὐ δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἀτενίσαι διὰ τὴν ὑπερβάλλουσαν θέρμην καὶ δύναμιν, πῶς οὐχὶ μᾶλλον τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ δόξῃ ἀνεκφράστῳ οὔσῃ ἄνθρωπος θνητὸς οὐ δύναται ἀντωπῆσαι; ὃν τρόπον γὰρ ·όα, ἔχουσα φλοιὸν τὸν περιέχοντα αὐτήν, ἔνδον ἔχει μονὰς καὶ θήκας πολλὰς διαχωριζομένας διὰ ὑμένων καὶ πολλοὺς κόκκους ἔχει τοὺς ἐν αὐτῇ κατοικοῦντας, οὕτως ἡ πᾶσα κτίσις περιέχεται ὑπὸ πνεύματος θεοῦ, καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ περιέχον σὺν τῇ κτίσει περιέχεται ὑπὸ χειρὸς θεοῦ· ὥσπερ οὖν ὁ κόκκος τῆς ·όας ἔνδον κατοικῶν οὐ δύναται ὁρᾶν τὰ ἔξω τοῦ λέπους, αὐτὸς ὢν ἔνδον, οὕτως οὐδὲ ἄνθρωπος ἐμπεριεχόμενος μετὰ πάσης τῆς κτίσεως ὑπὸ χειρὸς θεοῦ οὐ δύναται θεωρεῖν τὸν θεόν. Eἶτα βασιλεὺς μὲν ἐπίγειος πιστεύεται εἶναι, καίπερ μὴ πᾶσιν βλεπόμενος, διὰ δὲ νόμων καὶ διατάξεων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων καὶ εἰκόνων νοεῖται. τὸν δὲ θεὸν οὐ βούλει σὺ νοεῖσθαι διὰ ἔργων καὶ δυνάμεων; Κατανόησον, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ, καιρῶν μὲν κατὰ χρόνους ἀλλαγὴν καὶ ἀέρων τροπάς, στοιχείων τὸν εὔτακτον δρόμον, ἡμερῶν τε καὶ νυκτῶν καὶ μηνῶν καὶ ἐνιαυτῶν τὴν εὔτακτον πορείαν, σπερμάτων τε καὶ φυτῶν καὶ καρπῶν τὴν διάφορον καλ- λονήν, τήν τε πολυποίκιλον γονὴν κτηνῶν τετραπόδων καὶ πετεινῶν καὶ ἑρπετῶν καὶ νηκτῶν, ἐνύδρων τε καὶ ἐναλίων, ἢ τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς τοῖς ζώοις δεδομένην σύνεσιν πρὸς τὸ γεννᾶν καὶ ἐκτρέφειν, οὐκ εἰς ἰδίαν χρῆσιν, ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸ ἔχειν τὸν ἄνθρωπον, τήν τε πρόνοιαν ἣν ποιεῖται ὁ θεὸς ἑτοιμάζων τροφὴν πάσῃ σαρκί, ἢ τὴν ὑποταγὴν ἣν ὥρικεν ὑποτάσσεσθαι τὰ πάντα τῇ ἀνθρωπότητι, πηγῶν τε γλυκερῶν καὶ ποταμῶν ἀενάων ·ύσιν, δρόσων τε καὶ ὄμβρων καὶ ὑετῶν τὴν κατὰ καιροὺς γινομένην ἐπιχορηγίαν, τὴν οὐρανίων παμποίκιλον κίνησιν, Ἑωσφόρον ἀνατέλλοντα μὲν καὶ προσημαίνοντα ἔρχεσθαι τὸν τέλειον φωστῆρα, σύνδεσμόν τε Πλείαδος καὶ Ὠρίωνος, Ἀρκτοῦρόν τε καὶ τὴν λοιπῶν ἄστρων χορείαν γινομένην ἐν τῷ κύκλῳ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, οἷς ἡ πολυποίκιλος σοφία τοῦ θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἴδια ὀνόματα κέκληκεν. Oὗτος θεὸς μόνος ὁ ποιήσας ἐκ σκότους φῶς, ὁ ἐξαγαγὼν φῶς ἐκ θησαυρῶν αὐτοῦ, ταμεῖά τε νότου καὶ θησαυροὺς ἀβύσσου καὶ ὄρια θαλασσῶν χιόνων τε καὶ χαλαζῶν θησαυ- ρούς, συνάγων ὕδατα ἐν θησαυροῖς ἀβύσσου καὶ συνάγων τὸ σκότος ἐν θησαυροῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξάγων τὸ φῶς τὸ γλυκὺ καὶ τὸ ποθεινὸν καὶ ἐπιτερπὲς ἐκ θησαυρῶν αὐτοῦ, ἀνάγων νεφέλας ἐξ ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀστραπὰς πληθύνων εἰς ὑετόν, ὁ ἀποστέλλων τὴν βροντὴν εἰς φόβον καὶ προκαταγγέλλων τὸν κτύπον τῆς βροντῆς διὰ τῆς ἀστραπῆς, ἵνα μὴ ψυχὴ αἰφνιδίως ταραχθεῖσα ἐκψύξῃ, ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ τῆς ἀστραπῆς τῆς κατερχομένης ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν τὴν αὐτάρκειαν ἐπιμετρῶν πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἐκκαῦσαι τὴν γῆν· εἰ γὰρ λάβοι τὴν κατεξουσίαν ἡ ἀστραπή, ἐκκαύσει τὴν γῆν, εἰ δὲ καὶ ἡ βροντή, καταστρέψει τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ. Oὗτός μου θεὸς ὁ τῶν ὅλων κύριος, ὁ τανύσας τὸν οὐρανὸν μόνος καὶ θεὶς τὸ εὖρος τῆς ὑπ' οὐρανόν, ὁ συνταράσσων τὸ κύτος τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἠχῶν τὰ κύματα αὐτῆς, ὁ
