do you despise, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But according to your hardness and your impenitent heart, you treasure up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath. Since, therefore, it is not possible to be saved, without doing the works according to the commandment of God, nor is it without danger to overlook any of the things that have been commanded (for it is a terrible arrogance for us to sit as judges of the lawgiver, and to approve some of the laws, but to send others away), come now, let us, the contenders for piety, who have honored the quiet and tranquil life as an aid to the keeping of the evangelical doctrines, set forth a common care and counsel, so that none of the things that have been enjoined may escape us. For if the man of God must be perfect (as it is written, and as the discourse has shown in what has preceded), it is altogether necessary to be purified through every commandment to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, since also according to the divine law, even if what is blemished be clean, it is unacceptable as a sacrifice to God. Whatever, therefore, each one thinks he is lacking, let him set this forth for common deliberation. For what is hidden would more easily be discovered in the diligent investigation of the many, God, that is, according to the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, granting us the discovery of what is sought by the teaching and remembrance of the Holy Spirit. Just as, therefore, a necessity is laid upon me, and woe is to me if I do not preach the gospel; so also for you there is an equal struggle if you are sluggish toward examination, or disposed feebly and laxly toward both the keeping of what has been delivered and the fulfillment through works.

For the Lord says: The word that I have spoken, that will judge him in the last day; and, The servant who did not know his Lord's will, but did things deserving of stripes, will be beaten with few; but he who knew, and did not do, nor prepare himself for His will, will be beaten with many. Let us pray, therefore, that for me the stewardship of the word may be blameless, and for you the teaching fruitful. Since, therefore, we know that the words of the divinely inspired Scripture will stand before us at the judgment seat of Christ (For I will reprove you, He says, and set your sins before your face), 31.901 so let us also attend soberly to what is said, and let us hasten diligently to bring the divine teachings to fruition in work, because we do not know on what day or hour our Lord is coming.
