they will not be able. From the time the master of the house rises up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us; and he will answer and say to you: I do not know you, where you are from. TO THE CORINTHIANS, the 2nd. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation, giving no offense in anything, that the ministry be not blamed, but in all things approving ourselves as ministers of God. TO THE GALATIANS. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all.
RULE 2.
That it is impossible for one who also engages in matters foreign to piety to serve God.
Chapter 1. MATTHEW. No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one
one, and love the other; or he will be devoted to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. TO THE CORINTHIANS, the 2nd. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? That he who has obeyed the Gospel must first be cleansed from all defilement of flesh 31.705 and spirit, so that he may thus become acceptable to God in the achievements of holiness. Chapter 2. MATTHEW. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. TO THE CORINTHIANS, the 2nd. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. That it is impossible to become a disciple of the Lord for one who is attached to any of the present things, or who tolerates anything that, even for a little while, draws him away from God's commandment. Chapter 3. MATTHEW. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me ... If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it.
RULE 3. That the first and great commandment in the law by the Lord
was testified, to love God with all one's heart; and the second, to love one's neighbor as oneself.
Chapter 1. MATTHEW. But Jesus said to him: You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment; and the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. That the proof of not loving God, and his Christ, is not keeping his commandments; but the evidence of loving is the keeping of the commandments of Christ, in endurance of his sufferings even to death. Chapter 2. JOHN. He who has my commandments, and 31.708 keeps them, he it is that loves me. He who does not love me does not keep my words. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. TO THE ROMANS. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation? or distress? or persecution? or famine? or nakedness?
