of which He has given to us? For the proof of what Christ promised is from the presence of the Spirit; He promised the kingdom of heaven, he promised incorruptibility, immortality, wisdom, sanctification, redemption. What is the proof of this gift and from where do we have the security from the Spirit, which He has given to us? For He who has given the cause of the gifts will also give what follows, and for this reason the Spirit is called a pledge of the glory that is to be revealed. {M.} Why do you reject the holy Maximilla and Priscilla and say that it is not permitted for women to prophesy? Did not Philip also have four prophesying daughters, and was not Deborah a prophetess? and does not the apostle say: 'Every woman praying or prophesying with an uncovered head,' if it is not for women to prophesy or to pray? But if they pray, let them also prophesy. {O.} We do not reject the prophecies of women, and the holy Mary prophesied, saying: 'From now on all generations will call me blessed.' And as you yourself said, the holy Philip had prophesying daughters, 457 and Mary the sister of Aaron prophesied. But we do not permit them to speak in the churches nor to have authority over men, so as to also write books in their own name. For this is for them to pray and prophesy 'uncovered,' and she did not shame her head, that is, her husband. For was not the holy Theotokos Mary able to write books in her own name? But she did not do so, in order that she might not shame her head by having authority over men. {M.} For is praying or prophesying 'with an uncovered head' not writing books? {O.} Absolutely. {M.} Therefore, if the holy Mary says: 'From now on all generations will call me blessed,' does she speak with boldness and 'uncovered,' or not? {O.} She has the evangelist as a covering. For the gospel has not been written down in her name. {M.} Do not take allegories as dogmas for me. {O.} Indeed, the holy Paul even took allegories for the confirmation of dogmas, saying that: 'Abraham had two wives, which things are an allegory. For these are the two covenants.' But let us grant that the covering of the head is not because of an allegory. Set the allegory before me over all things: if there is a poor woman and she does not have anything, with what is she covered, must she not pray nor prophesy? {M.} And can she be so poor as not to have anything with which to cover herself? {O.} Often we have seen women so poor as not to have anything with which to cover themselves. But since you yourself do not wish there to be poor women so as not to have anything with which to cover themselves, what do you do in the case of those being baptized? Must they not pray while being baptized? And what do you say about men who often cover their head because of affliction? Do you also prevent these from praying or prophesying? {M.} In that hour, in which he prays or prophesies, he uncovers it. {O.} Must he not pray without ceasing, but disobey 458 the apostle who teaches him, the one who says: 'Pray without ceasing.' And you advise the woman being baptized not to pray. {M.} Is it for this reason then that you do not accept Priscilla and Maximilla, because they composed books? {O.} Not for this reason only, but also because they became false prophetesses with their leader Montanus. {M.} From where do you know that they became false prophetesses? {O.} Have they said the same things as Montanus? {M.} Yes. {O.} But Montanus was convicted of having said things contrary to the divine scriptures, and so they will be cast out with him.
