{1From the Book of Genesis.}1 Jacob says to his two wives: And the angel of God said to me in a dream, I have seen all that Laban does to you, and the rest. Then, I am the God who appeared to you in the place of God. If, then, he was simply an angel, one of the ministering powers, how did he call himself God? Or he was certainly the Son, who is the angel of God the Father, as word is of mind; for the word is the announcer of the mind, and further, as one who after the incarnation announced to us the name of the fatherhood. For I have manifested, he says, your name to men, and as the angel of great counsel. For thus did Isaiah name him; in addition, also calling him wonderful counselor, and mighty God, ruler. For who is God’s counselor, if not the consubstantial, and self-powerful, and co-equal Son? but the counsel of the Father, that is through men. But the counsel of the Father and of the Son hints at self-will. And that this Son and God was incarnate, the same one says: For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given. For for our sake the Son was born a child, and conversed with us. For concerning the Son in the proper sense he prophesied these things, and not concerning a son simply, and as a paradoxical work. For what is paradoxical about a son simply being born a child? wherefore he also added the following things most clearly for emphasis on 130.268 his divinity, and distinction from simple sonship.

{1From Jeremiah.}1 This is our God, no other shall be accounted of in comparison with him. Then he added, After this he was seen upon earth, and conversed with men. And again in another saying: Behold, our God himself will come and save us. And giving a sign of his presence in the flesh he added, Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the stammerer shall be clear; all of which having happened are an unfailing testimony of his incarnation. The same one also said again: Not an ambassador, not an angel, but the Lord himself saved them. For an ambassador is the mediator, such as was Moses, and anyone like him; and yet both through a mediator, and through an angel, many were often saved, like those led by Moses, and by Joshua son of Nun, and such. And again, those around Hezekiah, in whose time the angel destroyed the 185 thousand of the Assyrians in one night. It is clear, then, that the words signify a manifest visitation of God.

{1From Isaiah.}1 The Lord himself shall give us a sign. Behold, a Virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bring forth a son. Every woman who conceives in the womb is not a virgin. But she, while conceiving in the womb, was a virgin. Wherefore it is also given as a paradoxical sign. {1From the same.}1 Before the child shall know good or evil, he refuses evil to choose the good. But to what child will you apply these things? For Christ alone, it says, did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth, that is, he sinned neither in word nor in deed. But of all others, none, it says, is clean from filth.

{1From Micah.}1 And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah. For out of you shall come forth to me a ruler, who shall shepherd my people Israel. And to teach that this is not a mere man, but one united with God, he added, His goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of eternity; his activities according to his divinity, he says, or his generation from the beginning from the intervals of eternity, that is, eternal. But Zerubbabel was born in Babylon. Do you see the precision even down to the place where the Christ was born?

{1From Daniel.}1 I saw in a vision of the night, and behold, with the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man was coming. And he came to the Ancient of Days 130.269, and was brought before him, and to him was given the rule, and the honor, and the kingdom, and all peoples, tribes, and tongues serve him. His authority is an everlasting authority, which shall not pass away. And his kingdom shall not be destroyed

Καὶ πά λιν ἐν ἑτέρῳ λόγῳ· Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν αὐτὸς ἥξει καὶ σώσει ἡμᾶς. ∆ιδοὺς δὲ καὶ σημεῖον τῆς ἐνσάρ κου παρουσίας αὐτοῦ προσέθηκε, Τότε ἀνοιχθήσον ται ὀφθαλμοὶ τυφλῶν, καὶ ὦτα κωφῶν ἀκούσον ται. {1Ἡσαΐου.}1 ∆ώσει Κύριος αὐτὸς ἡμῖν σημεῖον. Ἰδοὺ ἡ Παρ θένος ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει, καὶ τέξεται υἱόν. Πᾶσα μὲν ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα, οὐκ ἔστι παρθένος. Αὕτη δὲ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα, παρθένος ἦν. ∆ιὸ καὶ ὡς παράδο ξον εἰς σημεῖον δέδοται. {1Τοῦ αὐτοῦ.}1 Πρὶν ἢ γνῶναι τὸ παιδίον ἀγαθὸν ἢ κακὸν, ἀπει θεῖ πονηρίᾳ τοῦ ἐκλέξασθαι τὸ ἀγαθόν. Ποίῳ δὲ παιδὶ ταῦτα προσαρμόσεις; Μόνος γὰρ ὁ Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίαν, φησὶν, οὐκ ἐποίησεν, οὐδὲ εὑρέθη δόλος ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτοῦ, τουτέστιν οὔτε λόγῳ, οὔτε ἔργῳ ἡμάρτηκε. Τῶν ἄλλων δὲ πάντων οὐδεὶς, φησὶ, καθαρὸς ἀπὸ ῥύπου.

{1Μιχαίου.}1 Καὶ σὺ, Βηθλεὲμ γῆ Ἰούδα, οὐδαμῶς ἐλαχίστη εἶ ἐν τοῖς ἡγεμόσιν Ἰούδα. Ἐκ σοῦ γάρ μοι ἐξε-λεύσεται ἡγούμενος, ὅστις ποιμανεῖ τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ἰσραήλ. Ἵνα δὲ διδάξῃ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἄνθρωπος ψιλὸς οὗτος, ἀλλ' ἡνωμένος Θεῷ, προσέθηκεν, Αἱ ἔξοδοι αὐτοῦ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἀφ' ἡμερῶν αἰῶνος· αἱ κατὰ τὴν θεότητα, φησὶν, ἐνέργειαι αὐτοῦ, ἢ ἡ γέν νησις αὐτοῦ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἐκ διαστημάτων αἰῶνος, ἤγουν αἰώνιοι. Ὁ δὲ Ζοροβάβελ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι γεγέν νηται. Ὁρᾷς ἀκριβολογίαν μέχρι καὶ τοῦ τόπου, οὗ ὁ Χριστὸς γεγέννηται;

{1∆ανιήλ.}1 Ἐθεώρουν ἐν ὁράματι τῆς νυκτὸς, καὶ ἰδοὺ μετὰ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, ὡσεὶ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενος ἦν. Καὶ ἕως τοῦ Παλαιοῦ τῶν ἡμερῶν 130.269 ἔφθασε, καὶ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ προσηνέχθη, καὶ αὑτῷ ἐδόθη ἡ ἀρχὴ, καὶ ἡ τιμὴ, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία, καὶ πάντες οἱ λαοὶ, φυλαὶ, γλῶσσαι αὐτῷ δουλεύου σιν. Ἡ ἐξουσία αὐτοῦ ἐξουσία αἰώνιος, ἥτις οὐ παρελεύσεται. Καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ οὐ διαφθαρή
