satraps of the earth, and consuls, and toparchs were called for another reason, but they became spectators of those athletes; so indeed it also happened then, so that the theater became splendid for the blessed one; having been called for another reason, the bishops who manage the Churches throughout all the earth were present, and they beheld that holy one. And when they had beheld, and had learned accurately of his reverence, his wisdom, his zeal for the faith, every virtue befitting a priest perfected in him, then God called him to Himself. This happened also out of sparing for our city. For if he had released his soul here, the weight of the calamity would have been unbearable.

For who could have endured to see that blessed man breathing his last breaths? who could have endured to see those eyelids of his eyes being closed, and his mouth being shut, enjoining its last words? 50.519 who seeing these things would not have been beside himself with the magnitude of the calamity? In order, therefore, that this might not happen, God arranged for him to release his soul in a foreign land, so that, having rehearsed the calamity in the meantime, when we see the dead man enter, we might not be struck down in our soul, our mind having become accustomed to the lamentation; which indeed also happened.

For when the city received that holy body, it mourned even so, and lamented greatly; but it quickly ended the mourning, both because of the aforementioned reason, and the one about to be spoken of. For the philanthropic God, having had mercy on us in our pain, quickly showed us another shepherd, preserving his characteristics with great accuracy, and saving the image of every virtue; who also, having ascended the throne, immediately divested us of the mourning garment, and extinguished the pain, and renewed the memory of the blessed one all the more. And the grief was fading, but the love was kindled more intensely, and the despondency was completely removed; and yet in the loss of loved ones it is not accustomed to happen so; but when a woman loses a beloved son, or a revered husband, as long as she keeps his memory fervent, the grief is also nourished more intensely in her soul; but when time, having entered, softens the grief, the bloom of memory is also extinguished with the intensity of the pain; but in the case of this blessed man the opposite happened; the despondency 50.520 was completely cast out, but the memory did not depart with the sorrow, but grew more intense. And you are witnesses, who after so much time, like bees around a honeycomb, fly about the body of the blessed Meletius; and the cause was not the affection of nature towards him, but the reasoning of right judgment. For this reason it was not extinguished by death, nor dimmed by time; but it grows, and increases to what is greater; not only of you who have seen him, but also of those who have not known him. For this indeed is the wonderful thing, that even as many as are younger than he was in his life, these also are themselves inflamed with the same desire. You therefore, the elders, have an advantage over those who have not seen him, in this very thing of having been with him, and having enjoyed his holy company; but those who have not seen him have an advantage over you, because not having beheld the man, they show no less desire for him than you who have seen him.

Let us all pray together, rulers and ruled, women and men, old and young, slaves and free, taking the blessed Meletius himself as a partner in this prayer—for indeed he has greater boldness now, and a warmer affection towards us—that this love may be increased for us, and that we may all be deemed worthy, just as here we are near this coffin, so there also to be able to be near his eternal tabernacle, and to obtain the good things laid up; of which may it be that we all attain by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.

γῆς σατράπαι, καὶ ὕπατοι, καὶ τοπάρχαι ἐκαλοῦντο μὲν δι' ἑτέραν αἰτίαν, ἐγίγνοντο δὲ θεαταὶ τῶν ἀθλητῶν ἐκείνων· οὕτω δὴ καὶ τότε συνέβαινεν, ὥστε γενέσθαι λαμπρὸν τῷ μακαρίῳ τὸ θέατρον· ἐπ' ἄλλῃ κληθέντες αἰτίᾳ οἱ τὰς πανταχοῦ γῆς οἰκονομοῦντες Ἐκκλησίας ἐπίσκοποι παρεγένοντο, καὶ τὸν ἅγιον ἐθεώρουν ἐκεῖνον. Καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἐθεάσαντο, καὶ κατέμαθον αὐτοῦ ἀκριβῶς τὴν εὐλάβειαν, τὴν σοφίαν, τὸν ζῆλον τῆς πίστεως, πᾶσαν ἀπηρτισμένην ἐν αὐτῷ τὴν ἱερεῖ πρέπουσαν ἀρετὴν, τότε αὐτὸν πρὸς ἑαυτὸν ἐκάλεσεν ὁ Θεός. Ἐγίνετο δὲ τοῦτο καὶ διὰ φειδῶ τῆς πόλεως τῆς ἡμετέρας. Εἰ γὰρ ἐνταῦθα τὴν ψυχὴν ἀφῆκεν, ἀφόρητος ἔμελλεν ὁ τῆς συμφορᾶς ὄγκος ἔσεσθαι.

Τίς γὰρ ἂν ἠνέσχετο τὸν μακάριον ἐκεῖνον ἰδεῖν τὰς ἐσχάτας ἀναπνέοντα ἀναπνοάς; τίς ἂν ἠνέσχετο ἰδεῖν τὰ βλέφαρα ἐκεῖνα τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καθαιρούμενα, καὶ στόμα συγκλειόμενον ἔσχατα ῥήματα ἐπισκῆπτον; 50.519 τίς βλέπων ταῦτα οὐκ ἂν ἐξέστη τῷ μεγέθει τῆς συμφορᾶς; Ἵν' οὖν μὴ τοῦτο γένηται, ᾠκονόμησεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐπ' ἀλλοτρίας αὐτὸν ἀφεῖναι τὴν ψυχὴν, ἵν' ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ χρόνῳ προμελετήσαντες τὴν συμφορὰν, ὅταν ἴδωμεν εἰσελθόντα τὸν νεκρὸν, μὴ καταπλαγῶμεν τὴν ψυχὴν, ἐνεθισθείσης τῷ θρήνῳ τῆς διανοίας· ὃ δὴ καὶ ἐγένετο.

Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ τὸ ἅγιον ἐκεῖνο σῶμα ἡ πόλις ἐδέξατο, ἐπένθησε μὲν καὶ οὕτω, καὶ ἀνωλόλυξε μέγα· ἀλλὰ ταχέως κατέλυσε τὸ πένθος, ἀπό τε τῆς εἰρημένης αἰτίας, καὶ τῆς μελλούσης ῥηθήσεσθαι. Ὁ γὰρ φιλάνθρωπος Θεὸς κατελεήσας ἡμᾶς τῆς ὀδύνης, ταχέως ἡμῖν ἕτερον ποιμένα ἀνέδειξε, μετὰ πολλῆς ἀκριβείας τοὺς ἐκείνου διατηροῦντα χαρακτῆρας, καὶ τὴν εἰκόνα τῆς ἀρετῆς διασώζοντα πάσης· ὃς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν θρόνον ἀναβὰς, εὐθέως τὴν πενθήρη στολὴν ἡμᾶς ἀπέδυσε, καὶ τὴν ὀδύνην ἔσβεσε, τὴν δὲ τοῦ μακαρίου μνήμην ἀνενέωσε μᾶλλον. Καὶ τὸ μὲν ἄλγος ἐμαραίνετο, ὁ δὲ ἔρως σφοδρότερον ἀνήπτετο, καὶ ἡ ἀθυμία τέλεον ἀνῃρεῖτο· καίτοι γε ἐν ταῖς ἀποβολαῖς τῶν φιλτάτων οὐχ οὕτω συμβαίνειν εἴωθεν· ἀλλ' ὅταν τις υἱὸν ποθεινὸν, ἢ καὶ ἄνδρα αἰδέσιμον ἀποβάλῃ γυνὴ, ἕως μὲν ἂν αὐτοῦ διατηρῇ τὴν μνήμην ζέουσαν, καὶ τὸ πένθος σφοδρότερον ἐντρέφεται τῇ ψυχῇ· ὅταν δὲ χρόνος ἐπεισελθὼν καταμαλάξῃ τὸ πένθος, συναπεσβέσθη τῇ σφοδρότητι τῆς ὀδύνης καὶ τὸ τῆς μνήμης ἀκμάζον· ἐπὶ δὲ τοῦ μακαρίου τούτου τοὐναντίον ἐγίγνετο· ἡ μὲν ἀθυμία 50.520 παντελῶς ἐξεβάλλετο, ἡ δὲ μνήμη οὐ συναπῄει τῇ λύπῃ, ἀλλὰ σφοδρότερον ηὔξετο. Καὶ μάρτυρες ὑμεῖς οἱ μετὰ τοσοῦτον χρόνον καθάπερ μέλισσαι κηρίῳ περιιπτάμενοι τῷ σώματι τοῦ μακαρίου Μελετίου· τὸ δὲ αἴτιον οὐ φύσεως ἦν τὸ πρὸς ἐκεῖνον φίλτρον, ἀλλὰ κρίσεως ὀρθῆς λογισμός. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐσβέσθη θανάτῳ, οὐκ ἠμαυρώθη χρόνῳ· ἀλλ' αὔξεται, καὶ πρὸς τὸ μεῖζον ἐπιδίδωσιν· οὐχὶ τῶν ἑωρακότων μόνον ὑμῶν αὐτὸν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν οὐκ εἰδότων. Τὸ γὰρ δὴ θαυμαστὸν τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὅτι καὶ ὅσοι νεώτεροι τῆς ἐκείνου ζωῆς γεγόνασι, καὶ οὗτοι αὐτοὶ πρὸς τὸν αὐτὸν ἐκκαίονται πόθον. Ὑμεῖς μὲν οὖν οἱ πρεσβῦται πλεονεκτεῖτε τῶν οὐχ ἑωρακότων αὐτὸν αὐτὸ δὴ τοῦτο τὸ συγγενέσθαι, καὶ τῆς ἁγίας ἀπολαῦσαι συνουσίας· οἱ δὲ οὐχ ἑωρακότες πλεονεκτοῦσιν ὑμῶν, ὅτι μὴ τεθεαμένοι τὸν ἄνδρα, ὑμῶν τῶν ἑωρακότων οὐκ ἐλάττονα περὶ αὐτὸν ἐπιδείκνυνται πόθον.

Εὐξώμεθα δὴ κοινῇ πάντες, ἄρχοντες καὶ ἀρχόμενοι, γυναῖκες καὶ ἄνδρες, πρεσβῦται καὶ νέοι, δοῦλοι καὶ ἐλεύθεροι, αὐτὸν τὸν μακάριον Μελέτιον κοινωνὸν τῆς εὐχῆς ταύτης λαβόντες καὶ γὰρ πλείων αὐτῷ παῤῥησία νῦν, καὶ θερμότερον πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὸ φίλτρον, αὐξηθῆναι ταύτην ἡμῖν τὴν ἀγάπην, καὶ καταξιωθῆναι πάντας ἡμᾶς, καθάπερ ἐνταῦθα πλησίον τῆς λάρνακος ταύτης ἐσμὲν, οὕτω κἀκεῖ δυνηθῆναι γενέσθαι πλησίον τῆς αἰωνίας αὐτοῦ σκηνῆς, καὶ τῶν ἀποκειμένων τυχεῖν ἀγαθῶν· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, δι' οὗ καὶ μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ, ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, δόξα καὶ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
