again he did not dare approach the temple. For he knew, he knew that the blow was sent by God, and he feared lest, by devising something further, he should call that fire upon his own head. For this reason he endured seeing the temple of Apollo brought to such desolation. For there was no other reason why he did not correct what had happened, but fear alone, on account of which he unwillingly kept quiet, and this knowing how much reproach it left for the demon, and how much honor for the martyr. For the walls now stand as trophies, sending forth a voice clearer than a trumpet; to those in Daphne, to those in the city, to those arriving from afar, to those present, to people who will be hereafter, they recount everything through their appearance: the struggle, the conflict, the victory of the martyr. For it is likely that one who approaches the suburb from afar, and sees the martyrium of the saint empty of its coffin, and the temple of Apollo stripped of its roof, will seek the reason for both of these; then, having learned the whole story, will depart from there. Such are the achievements of the martyr, those after his death. Therefore I also count your city blessed, because you showed such great zeal for this saint. For then, when he was returning from Daphne, our whole city poured out into the street, and the marketplaces were empty of men, the houses were empty of women, and the chambers were bereft of virgins. Thus every age and both sexes 50.533 of the city leaped forth, as if to receive a long-absent father returning from a long journey abroad, And you indeed gave him back to the choir of his fellow zealots; but the grace of God did not allow him to remain there perpetually, but again transferred him across the river, so that many of the places might be filled with the sweet fragrance of the martyr. And not even here, having come, was he to be alone, but quickly he received a like-minded neighbor and tent-mate, For he shared in the same office with him, and showed equal boldness for the sake of piety. Therefore he also received the same tent with him, not in vain, as it seems, this admirable zealot of the martyr. For he labored so much at that time there, constantly writing to the emperor, troubling the magistrates, and bringing the service of his body to the martyr. For you surely know, and remember, that in summer, when the midday sunbeam held the sky, with those who attended him, he would walk there each day, not only as a spectator, but also to be a sharer in what was being done. For he often touched a stone, and pulled a rope 50.534, and when some building work was needed, he obeyed before the ministers; for he knew, he knew how great his rewards for these things would be. And for this reason he continued serving the martyrs, not only with splendid buildings, nor with successive feasts, but in a better way than these. And what is this? He imitates their life, he emulates their courage, through all things to the best of his ability he preserves the image of the martyrs in himself; for see: They gave their bodies to the slaughter; he has put to death the members of the flesh which are upon the earth; they stood against the flame of fire, he extinguished the flame of desire; they fought against the teeth of wild beasts, but he also has lulled to sleep the most difficult of our passions, anger. For all these things, then, let us give thanks to God, because he has bestowed on us both such noble martyrs, and shepherds worthy of the martyrs, for the perfecting of the saints, for the building up of the body of Christ, with whom to the Father be glory, honor, dominion, with the holy and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Ἤδει γὰρ, ᾔδει θεήλατον οὖσαν τὴν πληγὴν, καὶ ἐδεδοίκει μὴ περαιτέρω τι διανοηθεὶς, ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκείαν ἐκεῖνο καλέσῃ τὸ πῦρ κεφαλήν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἠνείχετο εἰς τοσαύτην ἐρημίαν κατενεχθέντα τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος ὁρῶν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἄλλη τις ἦν αἰτία, δι' ἣν οὐ διώρθωσε τὸ γεγενημένον, ἀλλ' ἢ φόβος μόνον δι' ὃν ἄκων ἡσύχαζε, καὶ ταῦτα εἰδὼς, ὅσον μὲν ὄνειδος καταλείπει τῷ δαίμονι, ὅσον δὲ κόσμον τῷ μάρτυρι. Καὶ γὰρ ἑστήκασιν οἱ τοῖχοι νῦν ἀντὶ τροπαίων, σάλπιγγος λαμπροτέραν ἀφιέντες φωνὴν, τοῖς ἐν τῇ ∆άφνῃ, τοῖς ἐν τῇ πόλει, τοῖς πόῤῥωθεν ἀφικνουμένοις, τοῖς συνοῦσι, τοῖς αὖθις ἐσομένοις ἀνθρώποις ἅπαντα διηγοῦνται διὰ τῆς ὄψεως, τὴν πάλην, τὴν συμπλοκὴν, τὴν νίκην τοῦ μάρτυρος. Τὸν γὰρ πόῤῥωθεν ἀφιστάμενον τοῦ προαστείου, καὶ τὸ μὲν μαρτύριον τοῦ ἁγίου τῆς λάρνακος ἔρημον, τὸν δὲ ναὸν τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος τὴν στέγην ἀφηρημένον ὁρῶντα, εἰκὸς τὴν αἰτίαν τούτων ἑκατέρων ζητεῖν· εἶτα πᾶσαν μαθόντα τὴν ἱστορίαν, οὕτως ἀπελθεῖν ἐκεῖθεν. Τοιαῦτα τοῦ μάρτυρος τὰ κατορθώματα, τὰ μετὰ τὴν τελευτήν. ∆ιὸ καὶ τὴν ὑμετέραν μακαρίζω πόλιν, ὅτι πολλὴν περὶ τὸν ἅγιον τοῦτον ἐπεδείξασθε τὴν σπουδήν. Καὶ γὰρ τότε, ἡνίκα ἀπὸ τῆς ∆άφνης ἐπανῄει, πᾶσα μὲν ἡμῖν ἡ πόλις εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν ἐξεχύθη, καὶ κεναὶ μὲν αἱ ἀγοραὶ ἀνδρῶν, κεναὶ δὲ γυναικῶν ἦσαν αἱ οἰκίαι, ἔρημοι δὲ παρθένων οἱ θάλαμοι. Οὕτω καὶ ἡλικία πᾶσα, καὶ φύσις ἑκατέρα 50.533 τῆς πόλεως ἐξεπήδησαν, ὥσπερ πατέρα ἀποληψόμενοι χρόνιον, ἐκ μακρᾶς ἐπανιόντα τῆς ἀποδημίας, Καὶ ὑμεῖς μὲν αὐτὸν τῷ τῶν ὁμοζήλων ἀπεδώκατε χορῷ· ἡ δὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ χάρις οὐκ εἴασεν ἐκεῖ διηνεκῶς μεῖναι, ἀλλὰ πάλιν αὐτὸν τοῦ ποταμοῦ πέραν μετέστησεν, ὥστε πολλὰ τῶν χωρίων τῆς εὐωδίας ἐμπλησθῆναι τοῦ μάρτυρος. Καὶ οὐδὲ ἐνταῦθα ἐλθὼν μόνος ἔμελλεν ἔσεσθαι, ἀλλὰ ταχέως γείτονα καὶ ὁμόσκηνον τὸν ὁμότροπον ἔλαβε, Καὶ γὰρ τῆς ἀρχῆς ἐκοινώνησεν αὐτῷ τῆς αὐτῆς, καὶ παῤῥησίαν ἴσην ἐπεδείξατο τῆς εὐσεβείας ἕνεκεν. ∆ιὸ καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν ἔλαχεν αὐτῷ τὴν αὐτὴν, οὐ μάτην, ὡς ἔοικεν, ὁ θαυμαστὸς οὗτος τοῦ μάρτυρος ζηλωτής. Τοσοῦτον γὰρ ἐπόνει τὸν χρόνον ἐκεῖ, βασιλεῖ συνεχῶς ἐπιστέλλων, ἄρχοντας ἐνοχλῶν, καὶ τὴν ἀπὸ τοῦ σώματος λειτουργίαν εἰσφέρων τῷ μάρτυρι. Ἴστε γὰρ δήπου, καὶ μέμνησθε, ὅτι μὲν θέρους τῆς ἀκτῖνος μέσης κατεχούσης τὸν οὐρανὸν, μετὰ τῶν προσεδρευόντων αὐτῷ, καθ' ἑκάστην ἐβάδιζεν ἐκεῖ τὴν ἡμέραν, οὐχ ὡς θεατὴς μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὡς κοινωνὸς τῶν γινομένων ἐσόμενος. Καὶ γὰρ λίθου συνεφήψατο πολλάκις, καὶ σχοῖνον 50.534 εἵλκυσε, καὶ οἰκοδομίας δεομένῳ τινὸς, πρὸ τῶν ὑπουργούντων ὑπήκουσεν· ᾔδει γὰρ, ᾔδει πόσοι τούτων αὐτῷ κείσονται οἱ μισθοί. Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο διετέλει θεραπεύων τοὺς μάρτυρας, οὐκ οἰκοδομαῖς μόνον λαμπραῖς, οὐδὲ ἐπαλλήλοις ἑορταῖς, ἀλλὰ τῷ βελτίονι τούτων τρόπῳ. Τίς δέ ἐστιν οὗτος; Μιμεῖται τὸν βίον αὐτῶν, ζηλοῖ τὴν ἀνδρείαν, διὰ πάντων κατὰ δύναμιν τὴν εἰκόνα διασώζει τῶν μαρτύρων ἐν ἑαυτῷ· ὅρα γάρ· Ἐπέδωκαν ἐκεῖνοι τὰ σώματα τῇ σφαγῇ· ἐνέκρωσεν οὗτος τὰ μέλη τῆς σαρκὸς τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· ἔστησαν ἐκεῖνοι πρὸς φλόγα πυρὸς, ἔσβεσεν οὗτος τῆς ἐπιθυμίας τὴν φλόγα· ἐμαχήσαντο πρὸς ὀδόντας θηρίων ἐκεῖνοι, ἀλλὰ καὶ οὗτος τὸ χαλεπώτατον τῶν ἐν ἡμῖν παθῶν, τὴν ὀργὴν ἐκοίμισεν. Ὑπὲρ δὴ τούτων ἁπάντων εὐχαριστήσωμεν τῷ Θεῷ, ὅτι καὶ μάρτυρας οὕτω γενναίους ἡμῖν ἐχαρίσατο, καὶ ποιμένας μαρτύρων ἀξίους, εἰς καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων, εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ δόξα, τιμὴ, κράτος, σὺν τῷ ἁγίῳ καὶ ζωοποιῷ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
