he was not, before he was begotten, and that he came to be from non-being. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. For he was and pre-existed, and always was, neither beginning nor ceasing to be, neither in time, being the timeless one, nor a creature, or a thing made; for he is the maker and creator of all things, both visible and invisible. For all things were made through him. Truly, now is the time to say that prophetic utterance, This is our God; no other shall be accounted 59.613 in comparison to him.
He found out every way of knowledge, and gave it to John, who was beloved by him. For behold for me how with a single voice He has set aright the whole world, which will not be shaken; see for me one man sitting in Ephesus, and teaching the whole world theology; consider, how many states in the east, how many countries, how many Churches, how many again toward the setting of the sun, and great Rome likewise, and in the regions, and in the parts of the south, and the land of the Cappadocians, and all that is in between, islands, deserts, and the ends of the earth. Consider again the multitudes of the Churches, the clergy, and the multitudes of the people, both men and women, if you can count them.
But it is easier to count the sand of the sea than such great multitudes. And all these are disciples of John, taught by him to theologize, In the beginning was the Word; and in the marketplace they chant this, In the beginning was the Word; and travelers, and seafarers and sailors sing this melody, In the beginning was the Word, and in the deserts, and in the mountains both common folk and the wise, and small and great and everyone who understands, theologizes these things, In the beginning was the Word; and finally, as those crying out unceasingly 'He was' and 'he was' multiplied everywhere, those who said 'He was not' ceased. Those who theologized multiplied, and those who spoke idly ceased; the pious advanced, and the impious stumbled; the faithful rejoiced, and the unfaithful wasted away. The bow of the mighty has been broken, and the weak have girded themselves with strength. The foolish things of the world were confounded, and the wise of the world were brought to nothing.
But for how long shall I not cease my discourse about them? For if I continue to speak, I shall not be able to recount the height of their glory. For the glory that the teacher received from the Father, he has given to them. And why then do I persist, pursuing the unattainable? For even what we have dared to say is not as much as is worthy of the present chorus of the holy disciples, but as much as is possible with our ability; for every man is at a loss to praise them worthily. Wherefore I also speak with fear what I speak concerning them, lest perhaps through my own inability, and the smallness and poverty of my speech, I belittle their praises, and cause them to be indignant with me. Nevertheless, just as they are compassionate to all, so now they will forgive our weakness. For if when reviled they bless, when persecuted they endure, when slandered they entreat, how much more when praised according to our ability will they not be indignant, knowing the weakness of nature, even if they have now received that which is above nature from the God who loved them. And so those who were once poor have become rich, the inglorious glorious, the unlettered wise, the fishers of fish, fishers of men; and thus having finished their course, they have departed to the life that has no end, to their 59.614 own teacher and Lord Jesus Christ; to him be the glory. Amen. 2. Having delivered to their own successors the nets and the prey, but also the authority which they received from him who has all authority in heaven and on earth. For behold, he says, I give you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
These, therefore, as has been said before, the honorable teachers, the hierarchs, and shepherds of the flock of Christ, succeed to their authority and rule and zeal,

Πάντα γὰρ δι' αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο. Ἀληθῶς καὶ νῦν εἰπεῖν καιρὸς ἐκεῖνο τὸ προφητικὸν λόγιον, Οὗτος ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν· οὐ λογισθήσεται ἕτερος 59.613 πρὸς αὐτόν.
Ἐξεῦρε πᾶσαν ὁδὸν ἐπιστήμης, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν Ἰωάννῃ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ὑπ' αὐτοῦ. Θέασαί μοι γὰρ διὰ μιᾶς φωνῆς πῶς Τὴν οἰκουμένην πᾶσαν ἐκατόρθωσεν, ἥτις οὐ σαλευθήσεται· βλέπε μοι ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ἐν Ἐφέσῳ καθεζόμενον, καὶ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον θεολογίαν διδάξαντα· κατανόησον, πόσαι κατὰ ἀνατολὴν πολιτεῖαι, πόσαι χῶραι, πόσαι Ἐκκλησίαι, πόσαι πάλιν ἐπὶ δυσμὰς ἡλίου, καὶ τὴν μεγάλην Ῥώμην ὁμοίως, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ πλευρὰ, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ μέρη τοῦ νότου, τήν τε Καππαδόκων χώραν, καὶ τὰ ἐν μέσῳ πάντα, νήσους, ἐρήμους, καὶ τὰ ἄκρα τῆς γῆς. Ἐννόησον πάλιν τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τὰ πλήθη, τὸν κλῆρον, καὶ τὰ πλήθη τοῦ λαοῦ, ἀνδρῶν τε καὶ γυναικῶν, εἰ δύνασαι ἐξαριθμῆσαι τούτους.
Ἀλλ' εὐκοπώτερον ἄμμον θαλάσσης ἐξαριθμῆσαι ἢ τοσαῦτα πλήθη. Καὶ οὗτοι πάντες μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου, παρ' αὐτοῦ διδαχθέντες θεολογεῖν, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος· καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς ἀγορᾶς τοῦτο ψάλλουσιν, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος· καὶ ὁδοιπόροι, καὶ πελάγιοι καὶ πλωτῆρες τοῦτο μελῳδοῦσιν, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἐρήμοις, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσι καὶ ἰδιῶται καὶ σοφοὶ, καὶ μικροὶ καὶ μεγάλοι καὶ πᾶς ὅστις ἐννοεῖ, ταῦτα θεολογεῖ, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος· καὶ λοιπὸν ἐν τῷ πληθυνθῆναι πανταχοῦ κράζοντας ἀπαύστως τὸ Ἦν καὶ ἦν ἐξέλιπον οἱ λέγοντες τὸ Οὐκ ἦν. Οἱ θεολογοῦντες ἐπληθύνθησαν, καὶ οἱ ματαιολογοῦντες ἐξέλιπον· οἱ εὐσεβεῖς προέκοψαν, καὶ οἱ ἀσεβεῖς προσέκοψαν· οἱ πιστοὶ εὐφράνθησαν, καὶ οἱ ἄπιστοι ἐτάκησαν. Τόξον δυνατῶν ἠσθένησε, καὶ οἱ ἀσθενοῦντες περιεζώσαντο δύναμιν. Τὰ μωρὰ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξηλέγχθησαν, καὶ οἱ σοφοὶ τοῦ κόσμου κατηργήθησαν.
Ἀλλὰ μέχρι τίνος οὐ στήσω τὸν περὶ αὐτῶν λόγον; Καὶ γὰρ εἰ ἐπιμενῶ τοῦ λέγειν, οὐ μὴ φθάσω τὸ ὕψος διηγήσασθαι τῆς τούτων δόξης. Τὴν γὰρ δόξαν, ἣν ἔλαβε παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὁ διδάσκαλος, δέδωκεν αὐτοῖς. Καὶ τί λοιπὸν ἐπιμένω διήκων ἀνέφικτα; Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἅπερ εἰπεῖν ἐτολμήσαμεν, οὐχ ὅσον ἄξιον τοῦ προκειμένου χοροῦ τῶν ἁγίων μαθητῶν, ἀλλ' ὅσον δυνατὸν τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ δυνάμει· τὸ γὰρ τούτους ἐπαξίως ἐγκωμιάσαι πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ἀπορεῖ. Ὅθεν κἀγὼ φόβῳ λαλῶ, ἃ λαλῶ περὶ τούτων, μή πως διὰ τὴν οἰκείαν ἀνικανίαν, καὶ τὸ σμικρὸν τοῦ λόγου καὶ πενιχρὸν, σμικρύνω τούτων τοὺς ἐπαίνους, καὶ ἀγανακτεῖν αὐτοὺς κατ' ἐμαυτοῦ παρασκευάσω. Πλὴν ὥσπερ εἰς πάντας συμπαθεῖς ὄντες, καὶ τανῦν συγγνώσονται τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ ἀσθενείᾳ. Εἰ γὰρ λοιδορούμενοι εὐλογοῦσι, διωκόμενοι ἀνέχονται, δυσφημούμενοι παρακαλοῦσι, πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐγκωμιαζόμενοι κατὰ τὴν ἡμῶν δύναμιν οὐ μὴ ἀγανακτήσουσιν ἐπιστάμενοι τὸ ἀσθενὲς τῆς φύσεως, εἰ καὶ τὸ ὑπὲρ φύσιν νῦν εἰληφότες παρὰ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος Θεοῦ. Καὶ λοιπὸν οἱ ποτὲ πτωχοὶ γεγόνασι πλούσιοι, οἱ ἄδοξοι ἔνδοξοι, οἱ ἀγράμματοι σοφοὶ, οἱ τῶν ἰχθύων ἁλιεῖς, ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων· καὶ οὕτω τὸν δρόμον τελέσαντες ἐξεδήμησαν πρὸς τὴν οὐκ ἔχουσαν τέλος ζωὴν, πρὸς τὸν 59.614 ἑαυτῶν διδάσκαλον καὶ Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν· αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα. Ἀμήν. βʹ. Τοῖς αὐτῶν διαδόχοις παραδεδωκότες τὰς σαγήνας καὶ τὰ θήρατρα, τὴν δὲ ἐξουσίαν, ἣν εἰλήφασι παρὰ τοῦ πᾶσαν ἐξουσίαν ἔχοντος ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς. Ἰδοὺ γὰρ, φησὶ, δίδωμι ὑμῖν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ πατεῖν ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων, καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ ἐχθροῦ, καὶ οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς οὐ μὴ ἀδικήσῃ.
Τούτων τοίνυν ὡς προείρηται τὴν ἐξουσίαν καὶ τὴν ἀρχοντίαν καὶ τὸν ζῆλον διαδέχονται οἱ τίμιοι διδάσκαλοι, οἱ ἱεράρχαι, καὶ ποιμένες τῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ ποίμνης,
