and gentle; for such as these, above all, Christ also blessed, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit; and again He cried out, saying, "Learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart." For this reason He washed the feet of the disciples, giving us an example of humility. Let us be eager to gain from all these things, so that we may be able to attain the promised good things for those who love Him, by grace and loving-kindness.
HOMILY II. Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God
our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1. Most people do and contrive all things so as to have some favor both with rulers and with their superiors; and they consider this a great thing, and they think themselves blessed if they succeed in what they strive for. But if it is so great a thing to obtain favor with men, how much greater would it be to find favor with God? For this reason he always places this at the beginning of his epistle, and for this he prays 62.472, knowing that if this is present, there will be nothing left of troubles, but whatever is difficult, all will be resolved. And that you may learn, Joseph was a slave, young, inexperienced, unformed, and he was suddenly entrusted with the management of a house, and he gave account to an Egyptian man. But you know that nation is somehow quick to anger and unforgiving; and when rule and authority are also present, the anger is greater, being lifted up by the authority. And this is also clear from what he did after these things. For when his mistress accused him, he bore it; and yet it was not for those holding the garments to be doing violence, but for the one who was stripped. For it was necessary to say that if you had raised your voice, he would have fled, and if he had been conscious of guilt, he would not have waited for the master's 62.473 arrival. But nevertheless he considered no such thing, but irrationally entrusting everything to his anger, he cast him into prison; so irrational was he. And yet it was possible also from other things to conjecture the man's goodwill, his understanding; but nevertheless since he was exceedingly irrational, he reasoned no such thing. Therefore, having such a wicked master and being entrusted with the service of a whole house, and being a foreigner and alone and inexperienced, since God shed much grace upon him, as if the temptations were nothing, so he went through all things, both the slander of his mistress, and the danger of death, and the prison, and finally he came to the royal throne. This blessed man therefore saw how great is the grace of God; and for this reason he prays for this for them. And he also establishes something else; for he himself wishes to make them well-disposed towards the future parts of the epistle; so that, whether he rebukes or reproaches, they may not spring away; for this reason he reminds them before all else of the grace of God, softening their heart, so that, if there is affliction, remembering the grace from which they were saved from greater things, they may not despair in the lesser things, but may have comfort from there; just as he also said when writing elsewhere; For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Grace to you, he says, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting. See the excess of humility; having said, "We ought to give thanks," he gives them to reason and to understand that if others for your right actions do not marvel at you first, but at God, much more so do we. And otherwise he also lifts up

Εἶδεν οὖν ὁ μακάριος οὗτος, ὅση τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ χάρις· καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ταύτην αὐτοῖς ἐπεύχεται. Καὶ ἕτερον δέ τι κατασκευάζει· βουλόμενος γὰρ αὐτὸς πρὸς τὰ μέλλοντα τῆς ἐπιστολῆς εὐγνώμονας καταστῆσαι· ἵνα, κἂν ἐπιτιμᾷ, κἂν ἐπιπλήττῃ, μὴ ἀποπηδῶσι· διὰ τοῦτο ὑπομιμνήσκει αὐτοὺς πρὸ πάντων τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ, λεαίνων αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν, ἵνα, κἂν θλῖψις ᾖ, ἀναμιμνησκόμενοι τῆς χάριτος, ἀφ' ἧς ἐσώθησαν ἐκ τῶν μειζόνων, ἐν τοῖς ἐλάττοσι μὴ ἀπογινώσκωσιν, ἀλλ' ἐκεῖθεν ἔχωσι τὴν παραμυθίαν· καθάπερ καὶ ἀλλαχοῦ γράφων ἔλεγεν· Εἰ γὰρ ἐχθροὶ ὄντες κατηλλάγημεν τῷ Θεῷ διὰ τοῦ θανάτου τοῦ Υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, πολλῷ μᾶλλον καταλλαγέντες σωθησόμεθα ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ. Χάρις ὑμῖν, φησὶ, καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ Θεοῦ Πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Εὐχαριστεῖν ὀφείλομεν τῷ Θεῷ πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοὶ, καθὼς ἄξιόν ἐστιν.
