with no one pursuing, they were put to flight. No man accuses them, but their conscience. If an enemy had reproached me, I would have borne it. Those with us have become against us; those steering the ship with us, wished to sink the ship. I have marveled at your understanding. I say these things, not anointing you for sedition. For theirs is sedition, but yours is zeal. For you did not demand that they be destroyed, but that this be prevented, both for your sake and for the sake of the Church, so that it might not again be submerged. For your courage did not allow the storm to arise, but their opinion produced the surge. But I reckon, not by the outcome, but by their opinion. A man standing at the altar, entrusted with the care of so great a people, 52.447 obligated to quell distressing things, you have increased the storm, you have driven the sword against yourself, consuming your own children in opinion, even if not in experience. But God prevented it. So I marvel at you and praise you, because after the war and when peace has come, you consider how perfect peace might come to be. For the pilot must have concord with the sailors; for if they are at variance, the vessel is sunk. You have achieved peace after the grace of God; I will make you partakers of the security. Without you I will do nothing, and then also of the most God-loving Augusta. For she too takes thought and is anxious and does very much, so that what has been planted may remain firm, so that the Church may remain untroubled by waves. Therefore I praised both your understanding, 52.448 and the providence of the sovereigns. For they are not so concerned about war as about the Church, not so about the city as about the Church.

Let us entreat God, let us ask her, let us persist in prayers; and let us not, because the terrible things have been resolved, become more remiss. For this reason until today we pray that the terrible things be resolved. Let us give thanks to God, just as we were courageous then, so too today let us be diligent. But for all these things let us give thanks to God, to whom be the glory and the power together with the Son with the good and life-giving Spirit now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

μηδενὸς διώκοντος ἐφυγαδεύθησαν. Οὐ κατηγορεῖ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος, ἀλλὰ τὸ συνειδός. Εἰ ἐχθρὸς ὠνείδισέ με, ὑπήνεγκα ἄν. Οἱ μεθ' ἡμῶν καθ' ἡμῶν γεγόνασιν· οἱ μεθ' ἡμῶν τὸ πλοῖον κυβερνῶντες, τὸ πλοῖον καταποντίσαι ἠθέλησαν. Ἐθαύμασα ὑμῶν τὴν σύνεσιν. Ταῦτα λέγω, οὐκ εἰς στάσιν ὑμᾶς ἀλείφων. Στάσις γὰρ τὰ ἐκείνων, τὰ δὲ ὑμέτερα ζῆλος. Οὐ γὰρ ἠξιώσατε αὐτοὺς ἀναιρεθῆναι, ἀλλὰ κωλυθῆναι τοῦτο καὶ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν, καὶ ὑπὲρ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, ἵνα μὴ πάλιν ὑποβρύχιος γένηται. Ἡ γὰρ ἀνδρεία ὑμῶν οὐκ ἀφῆκε γενέσθαι τὸν χειμῶνα, ἀλλ' ἡ γνώμη ἐκείνων τὸ κλυδώνιον εἰργάσατο. Ἐγὼ δὲ, οὐ τῷ τέλει, ἀλλὰ τῇ γνώμῃ ἐκείνων λογίζομαι. Ἄνθρωπος θυσιαστηρίῳ παρεστηκὼς, δήμου τοσούτου 52.447 ἐγκεχειρισμένος πρόνοιαν, ὀφείλων καταστέλλειν τὰ λυπηρὰ, ηὔξησας τὸν χειμῶνα, κατὰ σαυτοῦ τὸ ξίφος ἤλασας, τὰ τέκνα τὰ σὰ ἀναλώσας τῇ γνώμῃ, εἰ καὶ μὴ τῇ πείρᾳ. Ἀλλ' ὁ Θεὸς ἐκώλυσεν. Ὥστε θαυμάζω ὑμᾶς καὶ ἐπαινῶ, ὅτι μετὰ τὸν πόλεμον καὶ τῆς εἰρήνης γενομένης σκοπεῖτε, ὅπως ἂν τελεία γένηται εἰρήνη. ∆εῖ γὰρ τὸν κυβερνήτην μετὰ τῶν ναυτῶν ὁμόνοιαν ἔχειν· ἐὰν γὰρ διαστασιάζωσι, καταποντίζεται τὸ σκάφος. Ὑμεῖς κατορθώσατε τὴν εἰρήνην μετὰ τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριν· ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς ποιήσομαι τῆς ἀσφαλείας. Χωρὶς ὑμῶν οὐδὲν ἐργάσομαι, εἶτα καὶ τῆς θεοφιλεστάτης Αὐγούστης. Καὶ γὰρ κἀκείνη φροντίζει καὶ μεριμνᾷ καὶ πάμπολλα ποιεῖ, ὥστε τὸ φυτευθὲν μεῖναι βέβαιον, ὥστε τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν ἀκλυδώνιστον μεῖναι. Ἐπῄνεσα οὖν καὶ ὑμῶν τὴν 52.448 σύνεσιν, καὶ τῶν βασιλέων τὴν πρόνοιαν. Οὐ γὰρ οὕτως αὐτοῖς μέλει περὶ πολέμου, ὡς περὶ Ἐκκλησίας, οὐχ οὕτω περὶ πόλεως, ὡς περὶ Ἐκκλησίας.

Παρακαλέσωμεν τὸν Θεὸν, ἀξιώσωμεν ἐκείνην, παραμείνωμεν ταῖς εὐχαῖς· καὶ μὴ, ἐπειδὴ ἐλύθη τὰ δεινὰ, χαυνότεροι γενώμεθα. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἕως τῆς σήμερον εὐχόμεθα λυθῆναι τὰ δεινά. Εὐχαριστήσωμεν τῷ Θεῷ, ὥσπερ τότε ἀνδρεῖοι, οὕτω καὶ σήμερον σπουδαῖοι. Ὑπὲρ δὲ τούτων ἁπάντων εὐχαριστήσωμεν τῷ Θεῷ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος ἅμα τῷ Υἱῷ σὺν τῷ ἀγαθῷ καὶ ζωοποιῷ Πνεύματι νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
