forty, and it is in ruins, its 13 traces being preserved only between Asshur and Babylon. And it was 533.

But Peleg, having become 130 years old, begat Reu, and after this he lived 209 years, and he died, having lived in all 339 years. Therefore, from Adam until the flood there are 2262 years, and from the flood until the confusion of the tower-building and the death of Peleg, which is division, 536 years. And thus occurs the division or diaspora of the sons of Noah and of those born from them; wherefore they were also called 'meropes' both from the divided speech and from the division of the earth. Now Shem begat Elam and Asshur and Arphaxad and Lud, and Ham begat Cush and Mizraim and Phut and Canaan, and Japheth begat Gomer and Magog and Thiras and Javan and Jectan and Tubal and Meshech and Madai, from whom the Medes came, and having prevailed over the Babylonians, the country was called Media, properly and eponymously.

So after the confusion and the destruction of the tower, the three sons of Noah summoned all those who were descended from them, and they gave to them a written distribution of the places, 14 which they had received from their father Noah, and they assign by lot to each, and to the tribes and families of each, a place and regions and countries and islands and rivers according to the underlying account, and they allot to the firstborn son of Noah, Shem, from Persia and Bactria as far as India and Rhinocorura the parts towards the east, and to Ham, from Rhinocorura as far as Gadeira the parts towards the south, and to Japheth, from Media as far as Gadeira the parts towards the north. The lands allotted to Shem are these: Persia, Bactriana, Hyrcania, Babylonia, Cordyaea, Assyria, Mesopotamia, ancient Arabia, Elymais, India, Arabia Felix, Coele-Syria, Commagene and all Phoenicia and the river Euphrates; and to Ham: Egypt, Ethiopia which looks toward the Indians, another Ethiopia, whence proceeds the river of the Ethiopians, facing the Red Sea towards the east, Thebais, Libya which extends as far as Cyrene, Marmaris, Syrtis, another Libya, Numidia, Massyris, Mauritania which is opposite Gadeira; and in the north along the sea he has Cilicia, 15 Pamphylia, Pisidia, Mysia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, Camalia, Lycia, Caria, Lydia, another Mysia, the Troad, Aeolis, Bithynia, ancient Phrygia, and likewise the islands Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus, and the river Geon, which is also called the Nile; and to Japheth: Media, Albania, Armenia both lesser and greater, Cappadocia, Paphlagonia, Galatia, Colchis, Bosporus, Maeotis, Derbe, Sarmatis, Taurianis, Bastarnis, Scythia, Thrace, Macedonia, Dalmatia, Molosse, Thessaly, Locris, Boeotia, Aetolia, Attica, Achaia, Pellene, which is called the Peloponnese, Arcadia, Epeirotis, Illyris, Lychnitis, Adriace, from which is the Adriatic sea; and he also has the islands Britannia, Sicily, Euboea, Rhodes, Chios, Lesbos, Cythera, Zacynthus, Cephallenia, Ithaca, Corcyra, and some part of Asia, that called Ionia, and the river Tigris, which forms the boundary between Media and Babylonia.

16 Now, of these allotted inheritances, Canaan the son of Ham, seeing the land by Lebanon, that it was both good and fertile and greatly different from his own land, tyrannically seized it, and drove out the heirs of Shem, and thus all the land of promise has been called the land of Canaan. And from there, therefore, the just judge afterwards gave it back to the sons of Shem, Israel, through Jesus the son of Nun, just as also to the
