the Scripture said, Rivers of living water will flow from his belly. But this, he says, he said concerning the Holy Spirit, which those who believed in him were about to receive. From this torrent the apostles were given drink, and having been intoxicated they sent forth rivers of teaching and watered the whole world with the divine word, and they nourished the newly-lit ear of corn of piety. For they did not flood only Egypt like the river Nile, nor did they pour out grace by the cubit, nor did they water Havilah alone like the Pishon, nor did they irrigate Ethiopia alone like the Gihon, nor did they fill Assyria alone like the Tigris, nor did they make Augustus Euphrasia alone fertile like the Euphrates, but they gladdened every city and fatherland and country and island together, they filled them through the grace of the Holy Spirit. And David bears witness to my word, crying out: Their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. Therefore the apostles were not full of new wine, but filled with the Holy Spirit. Whence also the blessed Peter, reproaching the Jews, said, as you just heard: <For these are not, as you suppose,> drunk, for it is the third hour of the day. O the paradoxical wonder. At the third hour the Holy Spirit came upon them. At the first hour the Father formed Adam, at the second hour the Son created Eve, at the third hour the Holy Spirit multiplied the tongues of the apostles. Let us then long for this intoxication; for the Lord stands crying: If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. O the Lord's abundance. He did not say: If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink, but If anyone thirsts, let him keep coming to me and drink. This is: Let him draw this drink every day, and it heals by night and by day. For it does not stop a bodily fever, but persuades a spiritual love; nor does it raise a swelling of the belly, but sharpens a desire of the mind; nor does it inflict the harm of a cold drink, but provides the gain of the knowledge of God. Longing for this thirst, the blessed David also cried out, saying: As the hart longs for the fountains of waters, so my soul longs for you, O God. Say you also, O man, with David: As the hart longs for the fountains of waters, so my soul longs for you, O God. See that you do not lie to God, that you are not found slower than the hart. Imitate that hart, run swiftly to the Lord; for the animal is swift-legged. Bear the horn of the cross upon your forehead; for the animal is also adorned with a prominence of horns. Never be separated from the apostolic mountains; for the hart also gladly frequents the mountains. Slay the venomous beasts of the heretics with the pious word [of the heretical serpents]; for the hart indeed ***. Never drink the muddied water of the Pneumatomachians; for it is impossible for a hart to drink muddied water. Ascend to the height of the evangelical thoughts and make your feet perfect in the blameless way of piety, so that you too may be able to say with the thankful mouth of the prophet: God who girds me with strength and has made my way blameless, making my feet like a hart's and setting me on high places. I would also wish, with much accord, to call the Lord Christ a hart; for he himself raised up for us the saving horn of the cross. Whence, being confident, we will gore our enemies; for just as the bodily hart *** from the abysses of the baptismal waters he seized the deep-swimming devil as a many-headed dragon. Whence the prophetic choir, singing the victory hymn to him, said: You crushed the heads of the dragon upon the water. And just as the horn of this bodily hart again with † the same things †
