"And you shall see his destruction." Which happened to the devil through the precious cross. "And upon necks." For behold, he says: I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. "My delicate ones." Those who were made delicate and well-dyed according to the original creation, traveled the uneven and rough roads. "Take courage, Jerusalem." God the Word, who for our sake became man, who deigned to call the Church his bride. "Wretched are those who mistreated you." Demons, heretics, those who at times persecuted the Church. "Wretched are the cities." The strongholds of evils, the constructions of demons. "Thus she will be grieved. Idolatry and the Synagogue of the Jews. "And I will remove from her." Of the Synagogue that persecuted the Church, and of the various assault of evils. "For fire will come upon." Instead of, until he returned; wherefore he also spoke of the longer time. 93.773 "Look around." To the sun of righteousness, our Lord Jesus Christ. CHAP. V. "Take off, Jerusalem." The old man with his desires. "And put on." As many as were baptized into Christ, have put on Christ. "Clothe yourself." These are the teachings of the old and new testament. Otherwise: the practical and theoretical virtue. "Put on the miter." The cross of Christ, which is imprinted on the forehead of the faithful. Or even the Lord himself; for the head of the Church is Christ. "For your name shall be called." The marks of the new Jerusalem. But he added of righteousness. For since there is peace for sinners according to David, wherefore the Savior also says: My peace I give to you. -So that the assault of the enemies is no longer able to shatter the peace of righteousness, nor to destroy the glory of piety. Otherwise: Since our peace is Christ, and he is our righteousness and glory, and he is the model of our pious way of life, from him we too are called. "Arise, Jerusalem." Upon a high way of life, upon the evangelical preaching. "For they went out." The figure is mournful, as David shows, fleeing Absalom. But those who served demons and were led by their various desires did things worthy of mourning. "As sons of the kingdom." Borne by holy angels, and sent through faith in Christ into the kingdom of heaven. "He commanded... every high mountain to be made low." Every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. "And everlasting dunes." The demons who from the beginning, from eternity, war against us. "And ravines to be filled." The divisions of the false christs to be brought to concord. Otherwise: that the formerly hollow and earthly souls be filled through good works, the stumbling blocks having been removed.
