or peril? or sword? As it is written: For your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us, and so on.
RULE 4. That he who does His will honors and glorifies God;
but he who transgresses His law dishonors Him. Chap. 1. JOHN. I have glorified you on the earth: I have finished the work which
you gave me to do. MATTHEW. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. TO THE PHILIPPIANS. That you may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. TO THE ROMANS. You that make your boast of the law, through breaking the law you dishonor God. RULE 5. That one must, being pure from all hatred towards all, love even one's enemies; and lay down one's life for one's friends, when need calls, having such love as God and His Christ had for us. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. You have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies; And after a little: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. JOHN. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. LUKE. and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. TO THE ROMANS. But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. TO THE EPHESIANS. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also has 31.709 loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God. That the proof of being Christ's disciples is love for one another in him. Chap. 2. JOHN. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. That the proof of not having Christ's love for one's neighbor is to do anything that harms or grieves him to the cutting off of his faith, even if what is done is permitted by Scripture for its own reason. Chap. 3. TO THE ROMANS. For if your brother be grieved with your meat, now you walk not charitably. Destroy not him with your meat, for whom Christ died. That a Christian ought, in every way possible for him, to heal even the one who is grieved with him. Chap. 4. MATTHEW. Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has ought against you; Leave there your gift before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 1 CORINTHIANS. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: being defamed, we intreat. That he who has love according to Christ sometimes even grieves the one he loves for his benefit. Chap. 5. JOHN. But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asks me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you. 2 CORINTHIANS. so that I rather rejoiced: for though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent. For I perceive that the same epistle, even if for a
