De exitu animi HOMILY 14

in the bridal chamber, the sinners into a boundless chaos. The righteous in manifestations of light, the sinners in the gloom of a storm. The righteous with angels, the sinners with demons. The righteous dance with angels, the sinners wail with demons. The righteous in the midst of the light, the sinners in the midst of the darkness. The righteous are comforted by the Paraclete, the sinners are punished with the demons. The righteous stand before the Master's throne, the sinners stand before the punishing gloom. The righteous perpetually see the face of Christ, the sinners perpetually stand before the face of the devil. The righteous are initiated by angels, the sinners are initiated by demons. The righteous offer supplication, the sinners an unceasing lament. The righteous above, but the sinners below. The righteous in heaven, but the sinners in the abyss. The righteous to eternal life, the sinners to a death of perdition. The righteous in the hand of God, the sinners in the place of the devil. The righteous with God, the sinners with Satan. Woe to the sinners! when they are separated from the righteous. Woe to the sinners! when their deeds are laid bare, and the counsels of their hearts are revealed. Woe to the sinners! when the combinations of the mind are exposed, and the assents to wicked thoughts are weighed, and the intellect is put in the scales. Woe to the sinners! when they are hated by the holy angels, and are abhorred by the holy martyrs. Woe to the sinners! when they are cast out from the bridal chamber; woe to the repentance then! woe to the affliction then! woe to the necessity then! woe to the tempest then! A terrible thing, to be separated from the saints; more grievous, to be separated from God; dishonorable, to be bound hand and foot, and to be cast into the fire; sorrowful, to be sent out into the outer darkness; gloomy, to gnash the teeth and to waste away; heavy, to be punished without ceasing.

Evil, for the tongue to be set aflame; without compassion, to ask for a drop of water, and not to receive it. Bitter, to be in fire, and to cry out, and not to be helped. The 77.1084 gulf is impassable, and the chaos is immeasurable, inescapable for the one who is shut out, without escape for the one who is held fast, insurmountable the wall of the prison, pitiless the guards, dark the prison, unbreakable the bonds, irremovable the chains, savage, and untamable the ministers of that flame, heavy those punishing helmets, firm the claws and unbreakable, hard the whips, muddy and bubbling the pitches, foul-smelling the brimstone, like hot coals those beds, unquenchable the pyre, greasy-smelling and stinking the worm; unforgiving the tribunal, impartial the judge, without excuse the defense; branded the faces of the potentates, impoverished the potentates, beggars the kings; commoners the wise, foolish and unpersuasive the orators; senseless the rich, unheard the flatteries of the forgers; manifest the crooked ways of the villains, far-shining the tracks of the covetous; stinking the smell of the lovers of money, manifest the festering deceit of the hypocrites, caught in a net, the attackers; all things are naked and laid bare before them. Woe to the sinners! profane, and accursed, and unclean are they before God. How their souls have been defiled! How their bodies stink from lust and licentiousness! How they have polluted their bodies, and defiled their soul, not having kept the robe of holy baptism! How shamelessly and unblushingly, with debauchery and drunkenness, the fetid pouch of the belly’s profligacy, the wineskin of the stomach, not having conformed to self-sufficiency and continence, but entrusting their wealth to it, luxuriously wallowing in pleasures like swine in the mire, they spent their days and their years; being puffed up with filthy thoughts, and base intentions, and idle talk, and theatrical songs!
