God [Exodus: God]. And Naboth had one vineyard. {Cyril.} Isaiah suggests to us to understand the vineyard as Israel. But its leaders, of whom Ahab is a type, desired to have it, but they did not persuade him to betray to them the choice vineyard of his father, so that they might also convert it into a garden of herbs, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men, and giving it to drink a muddy subversion. Then what did the God-hated Jezebel do, that is, the Synagogue of the Jews, concurring with the griefs of the leaders? She pursues by deceit the just Naboth, that is, the one who is coming. For Emmanuel was slain, being falsely accused. The God of the mountains is the God of Israel. {Cyril.} For those of Israel thought that they had conquered, with God being able to save only on the mountains or even on the hills; we have been defeated, therefore, it says, because the God of the mountains is the God of Israel; but if we should happen to meet for battle in the bare plains, we will certainly prevail, since the God of Israel is weak in the valleys. But these are charges of Hellenic madness, and the terrible loose-tonguedness of those who do not know the true and natural God. Therefore, the all-powerful God was very rightly indignant against the foreigners, because even 69.693 when conquering Israel, as I said, they offered thank-offerings to their own gods, talking nonsense they thought to have power even over God Himself. And he finds another man, and said: Strike me. {Cyril.} Do you hear how he who refused to strike the prophet was miserably slain, having fallen upon a terrible beast? And yet how is it not true to say that not daring to strike down a holy man and a prophet was the fruit of reverence? But in the word of the Lord, disobedience has become also an inescapable offense. Thus it is an inescapable offense to do something contrary to what seems good to God or not to do without delay the things commanded by him. Therefore it is necessary that whatever would please God be accomplished by us without hesitation and delay. But to do, or even choose to think, anything other than this, brings the charge of contempt; for such men have all but decided hereafter to rebuke God, as one who has sometimes not deliberated rightly.

Καὶ νῦν ἔλαβες τὸ ἀργύριον, κ.τ.λ. {Κυρίλλου.} Τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις Εὐαγγελίοις φησί· Μὴ βαστάσητε βαλάντιον μηδὲ πήραν ἢ ὑποδήματα, καὶ μηδένα κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἀσπάσησθε. Χρὴ γὰρ εὐθείᾳ ὁρμῇ ἐπὶ τὸ ἔργον χωρεῖν, καὶ μηδὲ εὐλογοῦντα ἀντευλογεῖν· ζημία γὰρ τῆς σπουδῆς ἡ πρὸς ἑτέρους ἀπόνευσις, καὶ τὸν τοῖς κηρύγμασι πρέποντα καιρὸν εἰκῆ δαπανᾷν οὐκ ἐπ' ἀναγκαίοις πράγμασι, μηδὲ χαρίζεσθαι φιλίαις τὸν ἀνωφελῆ μελλησμόν.
