having of speaking. The mind summons, and fear pushes away; the one draws me, the other pulls me back. Since, therefore, I am constrained by both, it is fitting for me to speak about the greatly renowned and holy Virgin. For I call her heaven and throne, and also a cross; for having stretched out her holy arms, she carried the Lord—a cherubic throne, cross-shaped, heavenly, about whom I peer through the Scriptures into the heavens, and I see her being worshipped by angels. Wherefore first Gabriel greets the Virgin: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you; hail, full of grace, the splendid heaven; hail, full of grace, who holds the Sun Christ, who flashes forth from heaven with the rays of bright lamps.

The Virgin has become a Seraphim, the one of many names, and many-eyed, of the incomprehensible vision; a certain spiritual covering, found in an earthly body, surpassing the cherubim. For they indeed turn away, unable to gaze at the spiritual fire of the Godhead. But she, gazing with clear eyes upon the incomprehensible and sleepless eye of Christ, desiring and loving, embraced him. Armies of angels, falling down at the footstool of the Savior's feet, are not strong enough either to see or to touch; but she, joining lips to lips, embraced the incomprehensible one. O Virgin, bearing the wonder of an incomprehensible mystery, having proclaimed a thrice-desired faith to the world. The Virgin has become higher than the angels, greater than the cherubim and the seraphim, pleasing to Christ the King, as a worthy servant and mother honored by God. Holy unblemished mother, who gave birth to Christ before you, who said: Before Abraham was, I am; who glorified the cave, and magnified the manger. For the Virgin and the cave and the manger, having the circle of heaven, bore the uncontainable God, the three clearly ministering to the Trinity, when the Virgin painlessly, having borne the Lord of heaven and earth in the cave, placed him in the manger, then also the ranks of angels surrounded the Virgin, crying out and saying: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Wherefore also shepherds abiding in the fields heard such a doxology of the angels concerning the Savior, and having gone with haste, they worshipped the light, having seen a strange wonder, the handmaiden of the Lord and the earthly virgin, a heavenly bride. For she appeared as bride, and bridal chamber, and mother of God in the cave, when she gave birth to the infant Christ, according to the prophetic voice of Isaiah: For a Child is born to us; a son also is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder, and his name is called Angel of great counsel, mighty God, ruler, Prince of peace, Father of the age to come. Then he says after these things: Magi from the east, illuminated and guided by a bright star, having traveled the length of the road from the east, have come to worship the one born in Bethlehem. Wherefore also upon reaching the city of Jerusalem, the star is hidden from them; but they, being troubled at having lost their guide, by force of necessity asking those in the city, inquired of them: Where is the Christ born? and it was considered a strange wonder by all. Herod, hearing about this, was greatly troubled, and calling the priests, he inquired of them where the Christ is born. But they spoke and did not deny; they confessed and did not lie. They were not able to hide the rays of the sun, they testified to the voice concerning the Savior being made clear through the prophet, saying: The Christ is born in Bethlehem. For thus he cries out through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come one who is to be ruler in Israel. O disobedient Israel! You confessed the matter of the law, and denied the lawgiver; they themselves testified where the Christ is born, and they themselves again denied the Christ who was born. What then of the magi? whose own mind was altered, whose heart was greatly troubled, and was extinguished in grief, whose groans as

Λέγω γὰρ ταύτην οὐρανὸν καὶ θρόνον ὁμοῦ τε καὶ σταυρόν· τὰς γὰρ ἁγίας ἀγκάλας ἐκτείνασα, τὸν ∆εσπότην ἐβάστασεν ὁ θρόνος χερουβικὸς, σταυροειδὴς, οὐράνιος, περὶ ἧς διὰ τῶν Γραφῶν ἐν οὐρανοῖς παρακύπτω, καὶ βλέπω ταύτην ὑπὸ ἀγγέλων προσκυνουμένην. Ὅθεν πρῶτον ὁ Γαβριὴλ τὴν Παρθένον ἀσπάζεται· Χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ Κύριος μετὰ σοῦ· χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ λαμπρὸς οὐρανός· χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ἡ τὸν ἐξαστράπτοντα ἐξ οὐρανοῦ λαμπραῖς λαμπάσιν ἀκτῖνα ἔχουσα ἥλιον τὸν Χριστόν.

Σεραφεὶμ γέγονεν ἡ Παρθένος, ἡ πολυώνυμος, καὶ πολυόμματος, τῆς ἀκαταλήπτου θέας· σκέπη τις νοερὰ, δι' οἰκουμενικοῦ σώματος εὑρεθεῖσα, τὰ χερουβεὶμ ὑπερβαίνουσα. Ἐκεῖνα μὲν γὰρ ἀποστρέφονται μὴ δυνάμενα ἀτενίσαι πρὸς νοητὸν πῦρ τῆς θεότητος. Αὕτη δὲ τρανοῖς ὄμμασιν ἐνατενίζουσα τὸ ἀκατάληπτον καὶ ἀκοίμητον ὄμμα Χριστοῦ, ποθοῦσα καὶ φιλοῦσα ἠσπάζετο. Στρατιαὶ ἀγγέλων ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν τοῦ Σωτῆρος προσπίπτοντες, οὔτε ἰδεῖν, οὔτε προσψαῦσαι ἰσχύουσιν· αὕτη δὲ χείλη χείλεσι συνάπτουσα τὸν ἀκατάληπτον ἠσπάζετο. Ὦ Παρθένε, ἀκαταλήπτου μυστηρίου φέρουσα θαῦμα, τριπόθητον πίστιν τῇ οἰκουμένῃ κηρύξασα. Ἀγγέλων ἀνωτέρα γέγονεν ἡ Παρθένος, μειζοτέρα τῶν χερουβεὶμ καὶ τῶν σεραφεὶμ, ἀρέσκουσα τῷ βασιλεῖ Χριστῷ, ὡς ἀξία δούλη καὶ μήτηρ τιμηθεῖσα παρὰ Θεῷ. Ἁγία μήτηρ ἀμόλυντε, ἡ τὸν πρὸ σοῦ 43.500 γεννήσασα Χριστὸν τὸν εἰπόντα· Πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγώ εἰμι· ἡ τὸ σπήλαιον δοξάσασα, καὶ τὴν φάτνην μεγαλύνασα. Παρθένος γὰρ καὶ σπήλαιον καὶ φάτνη, οὐρανοῦ κύκλον ἔχοντες, Θεὸν ἀχώρητον ἔφερον, οἱ τρεῖς τῇ Τριάδι σαφῶς λειτουργήσαντες, ὅτε ἡ Παρθένος ἀπόνως τὸν οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς ∆εσπότην ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ κυήσασα, ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ ἔθετο, τότε καὶ τάξεις ἀγγέλων τὴν Παρθένον ἐκύκλωσαν βοῶντες καὶ λέγοντες· ∆όξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία. Ὅθεν καὶ ποιμένες ἀγραυλοῦντες τὴν τοιαύτην δοξολογίαν τῶν ἀγγέλων ἤκουσάν τε περὶ τοῦ Σωτῆρος, καὶ τῷ δρόμῳ βαδίσαντες, τὸ φῶς προσεκύνησαν, ξένον θαῦμα θεασάμενοι, τὴν δούλην τοῦ ∆εσπότου καὶ τὴν ἐπίγειον παρθένον, οὐράνιον νύμφην. Αὕτη γὰρ καὶ νύμφη, καὶ παστὰς, καὶ Θεοῦ μήτηρ ὤφθη ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ, ὅτε τὸ βρέφος ἔτεκε Χριστὸν, κατὰ τὴν προφητικὴν Ἡσαΐου φωνήν· ὅτι Παιδίον ἐγεννήθη ἡμῖν· υἱὸς καὶ ἐδόθη ἡμῖν, οὗ ἡ ἀρχὴ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὤμου αὐτοῦ, καὶ καλεῖται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μεγάλης βουλῆς Ἄγγελος, Θεὸς ἰσχυρὸς, ἐξουσιαστὴς, Ἄρχων εἰρήνης, Πατὴρ τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος. Εἶτά φησι μετὰ ταῦτα· Μάγοι ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν ὑπὸ ἀστέρος φωτεινοῦ καταλαμπόμενοι, καὶ ὁδηγούμενοι, τὸ μῆκος τῆς ἐξ ἀνατολῆς ὁδοῦ βαδίσαντες, ἥκασιν εἰς προσκύνησιν τοῦ τεχθέντος ἐν Βηθλεέμ. Ὅθεν καὶ τὴν πόλιν Ἱερουσαλὴμ καταλαβόντες, κρύπτεται ἀπ' αὐτῶν ὁ ἀστήρ· οἱ δὲ θορυβηθέντες τὸν ὁδηγὸν ἀπολέσαντες, ἀνάγκης τῇ βίᾳ τοὺς ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐρωτῶντες, ἐπυνθάνοντο παρ' αὐτῶν· Ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται; ξένον δὲ θαῦμα πᾶσιν ἐνομίζετο. Περὶ οὗ Ἡρώδης ἀκούσας, ἐταράττετο λίαν, καὶ καλέσας τοὺς ἱερεῖς, ἐπυνθάνετο παρ' αὐτῶν, ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται. Οἱ δὲ εἶπον καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσαντο· ὡμολόγησαν καὶ οὐκ ἐψεύσαντο. Τὰς ἀκτῖνας τοῦ ἡλίου κρύπτειν οὐκ ἠδύναντο, τὴν περὶ τοῦ Σωτῆρος φωνὴν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου σαφηνιζομένην ἐμαρτύρησαν λέγοντες· Ἐν Βηθλεὲμ γεννᾶται ὁ Χριστός. Οὕτω γὰρ βοᾷ διὰ τοῦ προφήτου· Καὶ σὺ, Βηθλεὲμ, οὐδαμῶς εἶ ἐλαχίστη ἐν τοῖς ἡγεμόσιν Ἰούδα· ἐκ σοῦ γὰρ ἐξελεύσεται τοῦ εἶναι εἰς ἄρχοντα ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ. Ὢ τοῦ ἀπειθοῦντος Ἰσραήλ! Ὡμολόγηςτὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦ νόμου, καὶ τὸν νομοθέτην ἠρνήσατο· αὐτοὶ ἐμαρτύρησαν ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται, καὶ αὐτοὶ πάλιν ἠρνήσαντο τὸν γεννηθέντα Χριστόν.
