1. If, then, it were one and the same Mary in both 22.949 the evangelists, we shall say that the same woman often went to the same place, since she was drawn by the astonishment of the event and the joy at what had happened; therefore, having arrived first and having been the first to see the things in John, she went away hurriedly to the apostles at first, announcing the opening of the tomb; then, having at the same time seen the resurrection, she was distressed, suspecting that the body of Jesus had been taken from the tomb, and not knowing where it had been laid; then she returned a second time with them to the tomb; and when they returned home, she, having been left alone again in the place, stood weeping; then, having stooped down into the tomb, she saw the two angels; afterwards she also sees the Savior himself; who, since she was standing weeping, and was disposed in a human and lowly way, as if his body had been stolen, and was thinking unworthy things about him, first calls her 'woman,' rebuking her and reproaching her for her womanly passion; wherefore he says, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' Then he says to her: 'Mary,' reminding her of herself by her name, and of the words spoken long ago to her and the other disciples concerning his resurrection; but she, coming to her senses, and recognizing who it was from the voice and the power of the word, says, 'Rabboni,' which is interpreted, 'Teacher.'

Then, since she was still rushing to approach him as a teacher and not as God, he refuses and rejects her, 'Do not touch me;' for since she was still thinking mortal things, she was not able to touch his divinity; for it was not right for one who was still weeping, and seeking him below around monuments and tombs as if he were a dead man, and thinking lowly and human things about him, to partake of contact with him; wherefore he exposed the reason, for he says that he had not yet ascended, as far as it concerned her, to the Father, since she did not believe this had happened, but thought he was lying dead somewhere; wherefore he says to her: 'Do not touch me,' being such a one and reasoning such things about me; for to you I have not yet been believed to be God; to you I am still reckoned to be below; thus he turned away the one who was weeping and who had supposed him to be the gardener, by means of 'Do not touch me,' rebuking her; as also by calling her 'woman,' and by saying, 'Why are you weeping?' For to weep for the living one, or rather for Life itself, was a mark of extreme ignorance; and by these things he rebuked her; but by the things that followed he taught the theology concerning himself; but she, having been greatly benefited by these things, again departs from the tomb; this is the second time; then, having told the other Mary the things seen in John, she returned with her; this is the third time; and she became a spectator of the things mentioned in Matthew, no longer alone. but with the other Mary; and no longer stooping into the tomb as in John, nor seeing two angels, but one sitting on the stone.

Then after these things she sees the Savior again with the other Mary; this is the second time; and she no longer 22.952 hears, 'Do not touch me,' but on the contrary is commanded by him to rejoice instead of weeping; but she is also permitted to touch him, since she also worships him as God; for Jesus says to them, 'Rejoice;' and they, having come forward, took hold of his feet and worshipped him; and thus the holy Gospels are at the same time true, disagreeing in no respect; introducing the same Mary Magdalene both as not touching the Savior at first, when she wept and disbelieved; and as touching him, when she was commanded to rejoice; but that the things reported in John should be considered before those reported in Matthew, we have established through the things previously worked out by us according to one of the interpretations, having clarified how 'late on the Sabbath' is said in Matthew, with the evangelist indicating not the evening hour, but the dawn of the first day of the week; and this was a second one to that reported in John. And let these things have been said, if anyone entirely the
