were opened,” and “the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,” and “many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.”

17 And the centurion Primianus, also called Longinus, who stood by the cross, glorified God for all the wonders that had happened and said: “Truly this is the Son of God and the redeemer of the world.” “And all the crowds that had come together for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned beating their faces.” And the centurion Longinus, who was also entrusted with the cross, reported to the governor about the wonders that had happened. And leaving everything there, he went to his own homeland, in Cappadocia Secunda, near Tyana, to a place called Andrales, which in Hebrew is called Gabrales, and he changed his garments, and was shepherding the sheep. But having read the records, Herod found the holy Longinus unsettling the kingdom and stirring up revolt against his father and telling everyone to become Christians.

18 And having learned from the prefect Lucius the exact details and the matters of the centurion's confession and of his endurance, he raised a persecution against the Christians; and the holy Longinus was sought by the idolaters. And when the holy Longinus had come into his own country, there occurred in those days a plundering against all the pious, and the king sent three principes with a great force to search for the holy Longinus. And Herod, having summoned the three principes and the soldiers, gave them commands, saying thus: “If you do not bring me the head of Longinus the centurion, your own heads too will be cut off with swords.” Therefore, having received these commands, they went on the search, grieving greatly; for having traveled from Antioch as far as Rome and Illyricum, they did not find him.

19 And lamenting and returning to Cappadocia they wandered about, and coming near Tyana they were seeking the holy Longinus; and having come into the village of Andrales, they inquired of those there, and no one gave an answer about him; for they loved him greatly. And not receiving an answer, the soldiers went out of the village in great sorrow. And the holy Longinus was very near the road, pasturing sheep, by which the messengers were traveling; and the holy Longinus was sitting on the road. And seeing them coming from afar he recognized them and stood up; and when they came to him he said to them: “Welcome, brothers.” And since they did not recognize who it might be who was speaking to them, Longinus said to them: “Why, brothers, are you sullen and weary as from a long journey?”

20 And they said: “Listen, brother, to our bitterness, because a command has gone out against Longinus the centurion from Herod the king, containing this: ‘if you do not bring his head, your heads will be given to the sword.’ We, therefore, O man, have been seeking him for nine months and have not found him. Behold, you have heard the evils that have befallen us. If, then, you know anyone called Longinus the centurion, tell us.” And the holy Longinus said: “I do not know the man. But entering into my house, stay, and tomorrow you shall go on your way.” And they entered into his house to stay with him. And when morning came the holy Longinus said to them: “What is the cause concerning Longinus, that you seek him with such haste?” And the men said to him that he is sought by the king because he is unsettling his kingdom, persuading people to worship the crucified Christ and king of the ages.

21 And they were sorrowful and reasoning among themselves and saying: “What shall we do?” And the holy Longinus said to them: “Do not be troubled, brothers,

17 Ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος Πριμιανός, ὁ καὶ Λογγῖνος, ὁ παρε στηκὼς τῷ σταυρῷ, ἐδόξασεν τὸν θεὸν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς γενομέ νοις θαύμασιν καὶ εἶπεν· «Ἀληθῶς θεοῦ υἱός ἐστιν οὗτος καὶ λυτρωτὴς τοῦ κόσμου». «Καὶ πάντες οἱ παραγινόμενοι ὄ χλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ἰδόντες τὰ γενόμενα, τύπτοντες τὰ πρόσωπα ἑαυτῶν ὑπέστρεφον.» Ὁ δὲ κεντυρίων Λογγῖνος, ὁ καὶ πιστευθεὶς τὸν σταυρόν, ἀνήγαγεν τῷ ἡγεμόνι περὶ τῶν γε γενημένων θαυμάτων. Καὶ καταλιπὼν πάντα ἐκεῖ, ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πατρίδα, ἐν τῇ Καππαδοκίᾳ τῇ δευτέρᾳ, ἐγγὺς Τυά νων, εἰς χωρίον καλούμενον Ἀνδραλές, τὸ ἐπιλεγόμενον ἑβραϊ στὶ Γαβραλές, καὶ ἤλλαξεν τὰ περιβόλαια αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἦν ποιμαί νων τὰ πρόβατα. ∆ιαναγνοὺς δὲ τὰ σκρίνια, ὁ Ἡρῴδης ηὗρεν τὸν ἅγιον Λογγῖνον παρασαλεύοντα τὸ βασίλειον καὶ ἀναστα τοῦντα ἐπὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγοντα πᾶσι χριστιανοὺς γε νέσθαι.

18 Καὶ μαθὼν παρὰ τοῦ ἐπάρχου Λουκίου τὸ ἀκριβὲς καὶ τὰ τῆς ὁμολογίας τοῦ ἑκατοντάρχου καὶ τὰ τῆς ὑπομονῆς, διωγ μὸν ἤγειρεν κατὰ τῶν χριστιανῶν· καὶ ἐζητεῖτο ὁ ἅγιος Λογ γῖνος ὑπὸ τῶν εἰδωλολατρῶν. Τοῦ δὲ ἁγίου Λογγίνου ἐλθόντος ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τῇ ἰδίᾳ, ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις λεηλασία κατὰ πάντων τῶν εὐσεβούντων, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τρεῖς πρίγκιπας μετὰ δυνάμεως πολλῆς ἀναζητῆσαι τὸν ἅγιον Λογ γῖνον. Προσκαλεσάμενος δὲ ὁ Ἡρῴδης τοὺς τρεῖς πρίγκιπας καὶ τοὺς στρατιώτας, ἐντολὰς ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων οὕτως ὅτι «Ἐὰν μὴ ἐνέγκητέ μοι τὴν κεφαλὴν Λογγίνου τοῦ ἑκατοντάρχου, καὶ ὑμῶν αἱ κεφαλαὶ ξίφεσιν ἀποτέμνονται.» Ταύτας οὖν λα βόντες τὰς ἐντολὰς ἐπορεύοντο εἰς τὴν ἐπιζήτησιν λυπούμενοι σφόδρα· ἀπὸ γὰρ Ἀντιοχείας καὶ μέχρι Ῥώμης καὶ τοῦ Ἰλλυρικοῦ περιελθόντες, οὐχ εὕρισκον αὐτόν.

19 Ὀδυρόμενοι δὲ καὶ ὑποστρέψαντες ἐπὶ τὴν Καππαδο κίαν περιεπάτουν καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐγγὺς Τυάνων ἐζήτουν τὸν ἅγιον Λογγῖνον· ἐλθόντες δὲ ἐν τῇ κώμῃ Ἀνδραλεσῶν, ἐπυνθάνοντο παρὰ τῶν ἐκεῖσε καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀπόκρισιν ἐδίδου περὶ αὐτοῦ· ἠγά πησαν γὰρ αὐτὸν σφόδρα. Καὶ μὴ τυχόντες ἀποκρίσεως οἱ στρα τιῶται ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς κώμης ἐν λύπῃ μεγάλῃ. Ἦν δὲ ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος ἔγγιστα τῆς ὁδοῦ νέμων πρόβατα δι' ἧς διώδευον οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι· καὶ ἦν καθεζόμενος ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖ νος. Ἰδὼν δὲ αὐτοὺς πόρρωθεν ἐρχομένους ἐπέγνω καὶ ἀνέστη· ἐλθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· «Καλῶς ἥκατε, ἀδελφοί.» Μὴ ἐπεγνωκότων δὲ αὐτῶν τίς ἂν εἴη ὁ λαλῶν αὐ τοῖς, εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ Λογγῖνος· «Ἵνα τί, ἀδελφοί, σκυ θρωποὶ καὶ ὡς ἐκ μεγάλης ὁδοιπορίας κεκοπιακότες ἐστέ;»

20 Οἱ δὲ εἶπον· «Ἄκουσον, ἀδελφέ, τὴν ἡμετέραν πικρί αν, ὅτι πρόσταγμα ἐξῆλθεν κατὰ Λογγίνου τοῦ ἑκατοντάρχου ὑπὸ Ἡρῴδου τοῦ βασιλέως περιέχον οὕτως ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἀγάγητε αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλήν, αἱ ὑμῶν κεφαλαὶ ξίφει παραδοθήσονται. Ἡμεῖς οὖν, ἄνθρωπε, ἐννέα μῆνας ἔχομεν ζητοῦντες αὐτὸν καὶ οὐχ εὕραμεν. Ἰδοὺ ἤκουσας τὰ κακὰ τὰ κατειληφότα ἡμῖν. Εἰ οὖν οἶδάς τινα λεγόμενον Λογγῖνον ἐκατόνταρχον, ἀνάγγειλον ἡμῖν.» Ὁ δὲ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος εἶπεν· «Οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνδρα. Εἰσ ελθόντες δὲ εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου μείνατε καὶ αὔριον ἀπελεύσεσθε τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν.» Καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τοῦ μεῖναι μετ' αὐτοῦ. Ἐγένετο δὲ πρωΐα καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος· «Τίς ἡ αἰτία τοῦ Λογγίνου, ὅτι μετὰ τοσαύτης σπου δῆς ζητεῖτε αὐτόν;» Εἶπαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες πρὸς αὐτὸν ὅτι ζητεῖ ται παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ὅτι αὐτὸς ἀνάστατον ποιεῖ τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ, πείθων προσκυνεῖν τῷ σταυρωθέντι Χριστῷ καὶ βασιλεῖ τῶν αἰώνων.

21 Καὶ ἦσαν λυπούμενοι καὶ διαλογιζόμενοι πρὸς ἀλλήλους καὶ λέγοντες· «Τί ποιήσωμεν;» Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος· «Μὴ ταράσσεσθε, ἀδελφοί,
