But from when the cross was, and Christ was crucified on it by your fathers, from then until today it is for destruction and for dishonor, and God has been more angry with you than over the captivity in Babylon. For there after sixty years God had mercy and called you back; but here he has completely rejected you; and your father and prophet and patriarch Jacob has proven true, and all your laws have fallen, and you have been driven from your land of Judea, and you have been scattered from place to place, and you are for contempt and for mockery in all the inhabited world from the east to the ends of the earth. But our affairs, those of the Christians, flourish each day, and increase, and are strengthened, and the proclamation of our pious faith has spread through all the inhabited world, and Christ reigns in us, and we venerate his precious and life-giving cross, and hold it as a most valuable treasure. For indeed the cross of the Lord is more brilliant and more august than any royal crown; and what am I saying, a royal crown? Brighter than the rays of the sun themselves. And in the old days, the thing was a condemnation of a wicked life and of corrupt deeds; but now it is a symbol of a divine gift, a sign of spiritual nobility, an inviolable treasure, an inalienable gift, a cause of sanctification. This we set forth both on our bed and on our table, and everywhere we may be. For just as many of the soldiers neither take their breakfast nor sleep without their weapons; so also now let us hang it on the bed instead of a sword, let us draw it on the doors instead of a bar, let us surround the whole house with it instead of a wall; let us fence in with this the things within and the things without. For this has destroyed death, opened the heavens, cleansed the earth, led our nature up to the royal throne, abolished the tyranny of the devil. This form is twofold: the one made of matter, either of gold or of pearls or of precious stones, which is also often taken away by barbarians or thieves; the other is immaterial; for its substance is not from matter, but its essence is from faith, its material from the disposition of the one who makes it. This watches over those who are sleeping, this keeps safe those who are awake, this rescues those who are in danger; through this war is destroyed, and peace is established, Therefore I praise the long-suffering and patient mystery of your economy concerning me, O Lord; I venerate your precious and life-giving cross, O Master; I embrace the sufferings, I kiss the nails, and I salute the piercings of the limbs; I greatly esteem both the reed and the lance and the sponge; like a royal diadem, I put on the crown of thorns, and like with translucent stones, I adorn myself with the spittings, like with a most brilliant ornament I take pride in the blows. And I confess you, the one of the holy Trinity, Christ Jesus, as true God, who accepted the passion on my behalf, and was wrapped in a linen cloth, and mocked by the lawless Jews, finally buried, and risen on the third day, and coming again to judge the living and the dead. For yours is the glory and the power, together with the Father and your all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
