you may depart. Do you say, heretic, that "God" is greater, and "Lord" is lesser? I have shown you the prophet saying: The Lord who made the heaven, the God who established the earth. I show you again Moses saying: Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one. How is He one, if there are two names, one of a lesser, and one of a greater substance? For indeed the substance is not greater and lesser than itself, but equal and conjoined; The Lord your God, the Lord is one; and I show you that the name "Lord," this is "God"; moreover, if "Lord" is inferior, and "God" is greater, which ought to be His name? "Lord," the lesser, or "God," the greater? If He should say, "What is my name?" what do you say, O heretic? do you say that "Lord" is for the Son, and "God" for the Father, as more proper? If then I show you that "Lord," the lesser, is His distinctive name, what do you do? "Let them know that your name is Lord," the prophet says; did he not say "God"? And yet if "God" is greater, why did the prophet not say, "Let them know that your name is God"? For if "God" is His own and proper name, but "Lord" is alien to 50.705 Him as being inferior, why did he say, "Let them know that your name is Lord," the small, the lesser, the inferior in worth, and does not say that great and exalted name, the one worthy of the substance? And that you may learn that this is not small, nor inferior, but has the same power: "Let them know that your name is Lord; you alone are most high over all the earth."
4. But still you do not desist from the battle, but you say again that "God" is greater, and "Lord" is lesser. If, then, I show the Son being called by the greater name, what do you say? Do you cease the battle? Do you desist from contention? Do you recognize your salvation? Are you freed from your madness? Did you understand what I said? since they attribute the name "Lord" to the Son, but "God" to the Father, as being greater. If then I show you the Son being called by the greater name "God," the battle is resolved; for with your own weapons I overcome you, and with your own wings I get the better of you. You said that "God" is greater, and "Lord" is lesser; I wish to show that the lesser was not fitting for the Father, if He were greater, and the greater was not fitting for the Son, if the Son were lesser. Hear the prophet saying: This is our God, no other shall be accounted of in comparison with him; he has found out all the way of knowledge; after this he was seen upon earth, and conversed with men. What do you say to this? Do you contradict these words? But you cannot; for the truth remains, sending forth its own brightness, and blinding the eyes of the here- 50.706 tics who are unwilling to believe it.
Even if the struggles are deep, and the heat great, yet the word is greater and overcomes the difficulty of the hearers, and it comforts the heat with the dew of teaching; and though we gather once or twice a week, the hearer must not be idle. For if you go out from here, and someone says to you, what did the teacher speak about? you might say, against heretics; if he says to you, what did he speak? and you cannot find it, it is a very great shame for you; but if you do say it, you convict him, and if he is a heretic, you correct him, and if he is an idle friend, you draw him in, and if she is an undisciplined woman, you make her more temperate; for you are also responsible for your wife; For "Let the women," he says, "keep silent in the church"; "but if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands." If you enter the house, and your wife asks you, "What did you bring me from the church?" say to her, not meat, nor wine, nor gold, nor ornaments that adorn the body, but a word that makes the mind wise.
When you go in to your wife, set the spiritual table; say first, as the memory is fresh; Let us enjoy the spiritual things, and then let us enjoy the material table; for if we thus manage our own affairs, we will also have God in our midst blessing the table, and
