for a time, it grieved you. Now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved into repentance. For you were grieved according to God, so that you might suffer loss in nothing from us.

RULE 6. That one must speak boldly without fear and without shame in the confession

of our Lord Jesus Christ and of his words. 31.712 Chap. 1. MATTHEW. What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light;

and what you have heard in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Therefore, whoever confesses me before men, I also will confess him before my Father who is in heaven. LUKE. For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and of the Father, and of the holy angels. 2 TIMOTHY. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer hardship with the Gospel, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

RULE 7. That, even if someone seems to confess the Lord, and hears his words,

but disobeys his commandments, he is condemned, even if he is permitted for some dispensation to be among those with spiritual gifts.

Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter into

the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day: Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? and in your name cast out demons? and in your name do many mighty works? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity, and so on. LUKE. And why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? and so on. TO TITUS. They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny him; being abominable, and disobedient, and for every good work worthless.

RULE 8. That one must not be divided or hesitate concerning the things said by the Lord,

but be fully convinced that every word of God is true and possible, even if nature fights against it. For here also is the struggle of faith.

Chap. 1. MATTHEW. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to

them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying: It is a ghost; and from fear 31.713 they cried out. And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid. And Peter answering him said: Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters. And he said: Come. And Peter, getting down from the boat, walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But seeing the strong wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus, stretching out his hand, took hold of him, and says to him: O you of little faith, why did you doubt? JOHN. The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? He said therefore to them: Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. LUKE. And the angel said to him: Do not be afraid, Zacharias,

ὥραν, ἐλύπησεν ὑμᾶς. Νῦν χαίρω, οὐχ ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε, ἀλλ' ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε εἰς μετάνοιαν. Ἐλυπήθητε γὰρ κατὰ Θεὸν, ἵνα ἐν μηδενὶ ζημιωθῆτε ἐξ ἡμῶν.

καὶ ὃ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἠκούσατε, κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων. Καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀπο κτεινόντων τὸ σῶμα, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμέ νων ἀποκτεῖναι· φοβήθητε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνά μενον καὶ ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ. Πᾶς οὖν, ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπρο σθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. ΟΡΟΣ Ζʹ. Ὅτι, κἂν δοκῇ τις ὁμολογεῖν τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ἀκούῃ τῶν λόγων

αὐτοῦ, ἀπειθῇ δὲ ταῖς ἐν τολαῖς αὐτοῦ, κατακέκριται, κἂν ἐν χαρίσμασι πνευματικοῖς διά τινα οἰκονομίαν γενέσθαι συγ χωρηθῇ.

Κεφάλ. αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Οὐ πᾶς ὁ λέγων μοι, Κύριε, Κύ ριε, εἰσελεύσεται εἰς

τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρα νῶν, ἀλλ' ὁ ποιῶν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς. Πολλοὶ ἐροῦσί μοι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ· Κύριε, Κύριε, οὐ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι προεφη τεύσαμεν; καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλο μεν; καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιή σαμεν; Καὶ τότε ὁμολογήσω αὐτοῖς, ὅτι Οὐδέ ποτε ἔγνων ὑμᾶς. Ἀποχωρεῖτε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, οἱ ἐργα ζόμενοι τὴν ἀνομίαν, καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Τί δέ με καλεῖτε, Κύριε, Κύριε, καὶ οὐ ποιεῖτε ἃ λέγω; καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΤ. Θεὸν ὁμολογοῦσιν εἰδέ ναι, τοῖς δὲ ἔργοις ἀρνοῦνται· βδελυκτοὶ ὄντες, καὶ ἀπειθεῖς, καὶ πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἀδό κιμοι.

ΟΡΟΣ Ηʹ. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ διακρίνεσθαι καὶ διστάζειν ἐπὶ τοῖς ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου

λεγομένοις, ἀλλὰ πεπληροφορῆ σθαι πᾶν ῥῆμα Θεοῦ ἀληθὲς εἶναι καὶ δυνατὸν, κἂν ἡ φύσις μάχηται. Ἐνταῦθα γὰρ καὶ ὁ ἀγὼν τῆς πίστεως.

Κεφάλ. αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἔρχεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς

αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης. Καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν περιπατοῦντα, ἐταράχθησαν, λέγοντες· Φάντασμά ἐστι· καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου 31.713 ἔκραξαν. Εὐθέως δὲ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων· Θαρσεῖτε, ἐγώ εἰμι, μὴ φοβεῖσθε. Ἀποκρι θεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπε· Κύριε, εἰ σὺ εἶ, κέλευσόν με πρὸς σὲ ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα. Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ἐλθέ. Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου ὁ Πέ τρος, περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα, ἐλθεῖν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν. Βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἰσχυρὸν, ἐφοβήθη· καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι, ἔκρα ξε λέγων· Κύριε, σῶσόν με. Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα, ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ὀλιγόπιστε, εἰς τί ἐδίστασας; ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Ἐμάχοντο οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, λέγοντες· Πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν τὴν σάρκα δοῦναι φαγεῖν; Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν μὴ φάγητε τὴν σάρκα τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, καὶ πίητε αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα, οὐκ ἔχετε ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.
