the nature of man was found enriched without fault, and has made new for us that the souls separated from their bodies no longer run to hades as before, but rather are sent into the hands of a living God. And knowing this, the holy Stephen said, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;" and the blessed Peter also writes, "So also those suffering according to the will of God should entrust their souls to a faithful creator."
469 XII. Of Cyril, in a homily inscribed on Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven; but concerning that day and hour no one knows. But when he says this, he does not entirely mean himself; for he did not add precisely, 'Nor the Son of God,' but says without qualification, 'nor the son;' so that you might understand something like this: the disciples were eager to learn everything with precision, and attempted, so to speak, to investigate even the depths of the Lord. But the matter was far beyond them. Therefore, lest by forbidding the explanation they wished to learn, he might seem somehow to grieve those who were genuine, he says obscurely, "But concerning that day or the hour, no one knows, not even the angels, nor the son, but only the Father;" so that you might understand thus: if man is also called to sonship and has been shown to be a new son, let him not seek what is beyond nature, nor should he think it right to learn what the Father has not revealed even to the angels; and if an angel does not know, neither will a man know, even if he is called to sonship.
ἀπλημμελὲς ἡ ἀνθρώπου φύσις εὑρέθη πλουτήσασα, καὶ κεκαινοτόμηκεν ἡμῖν τὸ μηκέτι μὲν εἰς ᾳδου τρέχειν τὰς τῶν σωμάτων ἀπαλλαττομένας ψυχὰς καθὰ καὶ πρώην, πέμπεσθαι δὲ μᾶλλον εἰς χεῖρας Θεοῦ ζῶντος. καὶ τοῦτο εἰδὼς ὁ αγιος εφη Στέφανος "Κύριε ̓Ιησοῦ δέξαι τὸ πνεῦμά "μου·" καὶ ὁ μακάριος δὲ γράφει Πέτρος "Ωστε καὶ "πάσχοντες κατὰ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ πιστῷ κτίστῃ παρατι"θέσθωσαν τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς."
