he would strongly affirm her to be the same Mary in both the evangelists, both John and Matthew.

4. But if it were conceded that she is not the same, but that one arrived late on the Sabbath according to Matthew with the other Mary, and another in John, early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, having come alone to the tomb, all doubt would be resolved; that the first ones, having arrived late on the Sabbath, being more diligent and more faithful, were deemed worthy both to hear "hail" from the Savior, and to worship, and to hold his feet; but that the Mary in John, being a different one from them, had arrived later, though it was early; and that this was the one according to Mark from whom he had cast out seven demons; and that her soul was greatly troubled and she was more unbelieving, so that she stood weeping, and supposed the body of the Savior was taken from the tomb, and had been carried to another place; so confused was her soul, that she was not even astonished at the two angels seen by her inside the tomb, nor did she recognize the Savior when he appeared to her, but thought him to be the gardener.

4. Concerning the tomb and the apparent disagreement. How in

Matthew Mary Magdalene with the other Mary saw the one angel outside the tomb sitting upon the stone of the

tomb; and how according to John Mary Magdalene sees two angels sitting inside the tomb; and according to Luke two men stood by the women; and according to Mark a young man was seen by them sitting on the right side of the tomb by

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome.

1. The events in Matthew take precedence; therefore the two Marys just saw the angel who had appeared and rolled away the stone; but the events in 22.953 John happen later, when two angels were seen inside the tomb, being different from the one who appeared outside and sat on the stone, as Matthew says; and what is said in Luke, that two men were seen in shining garments; and furthermore also the young man in Mark clothed in a white robe, seen on the right and not the left, the one evangelizing bright and favorable things to the women, they too would be different from one another, and from the others mentioned by the first evangelists; for this reason they did not even call them angels; but Mark and Luke did not even mention the things in John and Matthew, I mean the visions of the Savior; but they left the greater things to be said by the greater Matthew and John; they themselves, saying the secondary things, and filling in what was passed over in silence by them.

2. It is possible, therefore, to say thus, that since there are four evangelists, there appear to be an equal number of visions recorded by them; the times are four, and those seen at each time are distinct; likewise also the women who see are different, and the words spoken to them by those who were seen vary; how then is this so? The first time, therefore, is that in Matthew late on the Sabbath, where Mary Magdalene with the other one outside the tomb, when there was also an earthquake, saw one saying thus, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified; he is not here; for he is risen; come, see.” And the fourth and last is the one appearing in Mark when the sun had risen, the 22.956 young man who was seen by the women, by Mary Magdalene and by Mary
