is mixed in with the Levitical sacrifices, and not of a small part of the inhabited world, nor for a short time, but a purification of the whole world and for all eternity. For this reason a sheep is taken, on account of its innocence, and as the garment for our ancient nakedness. For such is the victim for us, a garment of incorruption, both being and being called so. And perfect, not only on account of the divinity, than which nothing is more perfect, but 36.641 also on account of the assumption which was anointed with divinity, and became that which anointed it, and, I dare say, of one substance with God. And a male, as being offered for Adam, or rather, the stronger for the strong, for the first one who fell under sin, and because especially it bears in itself nothing female, nor unmanly; but also burst forth by force from virginal and maternal bonds, by great authority, and was born a male child from the prophetess, as Isaiah proclaims. And of one year, as the sun of righteousness, either coming forth from thence, or circumscribed by what is seen, and returning to himself; and blessed as a crown of goodness, and from every side equal to and like himself; and not only so, but also as giving life to the circle of virtues, which are gently mixed and blended with one another, by a law of friendship and order. And without blemish and unadulterated, as healing blemishes, and the defects and defilements that come from wickedness. For even if He took up our sins, and bore our sicknesses, He Himself did not suffer anything worthy of healing. For He was tempted in all things, according to our likeness, yet without sin. For the darkness that pursued the light which shines in the darkness, did not overcome it.
14. What more? A month is introduced as the first, or rather, the beginning of months; whether this was so among the Hebrews from the beginning, or came to be so later from this, and received its primacy from the mystery. And on the tenth day of the month; for this is the most complete of numbers, the first perfect unit from units, and generative of perfection. And it is kept until the fifth day, perhaps because my sacrifice is a purification of the senses, from which comes our stumbling, and about which is the war, as they receive the sting of sin. And it is chosen, not only from the lambs, but also from the lesser kind, from the left hand, the goats, because he is sacrificed not for the just only, but also for sinners; and perhaps for these even more, inasmuch as we are in need of greater loving-kindness. And it is no wonder, if the sheep is sought for especially for each household, and if not, also for the houses of the patriarchs, being contributed due to poverty; since it is best that each person should be sufficient for himself for perfection, and to offer a living, holy sacrifice to the God who calls, being consecrated always and through all things; and if not, 36.644 to also use for this co-workers, those of like race and like manner in virtue. For this seems to me to be the meaning, to share the victim with those nearest, if it should be necessary.
15. Thence comes the sacred night, the rival of this present life which is poured out, of this night, in which the first-born darkness is dissolved, and all things come to light, and order, and form, and the former disorder receives order. Thence we flee Egypt, that gloomy and persecuting sin, and Pharaoh the invisible tyrant, and the bitter taskmasters, being re-fashioned for the world above; and we are freed from the clay and the brick-making, and from the constitution of straw and treacherous flesh, which among the many is not even held together by thoughts as worthless as straw. Thence the lamb is sacrificed, and with the precious blood are sealed our action and word, that is, our state and energy, the doorposts of our doors, I mean of the movements and dogmas of the mind, being well opened and closed by contemplation, since there is a certain measure even of comprehensions. Thence comes the last and most grievous plague upon the persecutors, and truly worthy of the night; and it bewails the
