to the darkness, 'Be revealed.'" And that he is not speaking of a mere man, he himself was the one who said, "'This is our God, no other shall be accounted of in comparison with him.'" Isaiah, "'Be strong, you weak hands and feeble knees; comfort, you faint-hearted in mind; be strong, fear not. Behold our God, behold the Lord comes with strength.'" And again, "'Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear; then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be distinct.'" And again, "'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good tidings to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind.'"
5. Concerning the betrayal.
David, "'He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'"
6. Concerning the Passion. "'My people, they who call you blessed lead you astray, and trouble the path of your feet.
But now the Lord will stand up for judgment, and will bring his people to trial. The Lord himself shall come to judgment with the elders of the people, and with their rulers.'" David, "'Why did the heathen rage, and the peoples imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ.'" Jeremiah, "'The breath of our face, God the Lord, was taken in their corruptions, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.'" Isaiah, "'He bears our iniquities, and is in sorrow for us, and we accounted him to be in trouble, and in suffering, and in affliction. But he was wounded for our sins, and bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, by his stripes we were healed. All we as sheep have gone astray; every one has gone astray in his own way. And the Lord delivered him up for our sins; and he, because of his affliction, opens not his mouth. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth in 46.213 his humiliation, because his life is taken from the earth; for the sins of my people he was led to death. And I will give the wicked for his burial, and the rich for his death, because he did no iniquity, nor was guile found in his mouth.'" And after a little, "'Therefore he shall inherit many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because his soul was delivered up to death, because he did no iniquity, and was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sins of many, and was delivered up for their sins.'" From these things it is clear that the Prophet is not speaking about the people who were led away into Babylon, as some have supposed. For how could the people, for the sins of the people, be led to death? Or which people, and of which people? And again, "'I gave my back to the scourges, and my cheeks to blows, and my face I did not turn away from the shame of spitting.'" And again, "'He had no form, nor beauty, but his form was dishonored, failing beyond the sons of men.'" And again, he who said these things, said, "'And who shall declare his generation?'" David, "'For many dogs have compassed me; the assembly of the wicked has enclosed me. They pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones.
And they have looked and stared upon me; they parted my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots.'" Jeremiah, "'But I was like an innocent lamb led to be sacrificed, I knew it not.'" And again, "'Come, and let us put wood into
