as if, with no one guiding him, he had mastered the knowledge of each subject with all accuracy, subjects which for most people learning comes through time and toil. This one, therefore, scorning the pursuit of secular studies, and having nature as a sufficient teacher of every good lesson, and always looking to his sister and making her the goal of every good thing, advanced so far in virtue, that he seemed to have no less than the great Basil in the advantages of virtue. These things, indeed, in his later life; but at that time he was everything to his sister and his mother, cooperating with them toward that angelic life. And once when a severe famine had occurred, and many people from all over, hearing the fame of their charity, were streaming toward the remote place where they lived, he so increased the food supplies through his ingenuity, that the wilderness seemed to be a city because of the multitude of those who came.
13 Meanwhile, having advanced to a ripe old age, their mother departed to God, having rested her life in the hands of both her children. It is worthy to recount the words of her blessing, which she used for her children, having remembered each of those not present in a fitting way, so that no one was excluded from the blessing, and especially commending to God through prayer those present with her. For as these two were sitting beside her on either side of the bed, she touched her children with each hand and said these things to God in her final words: "To you, Lord, I offer both as first-fruits and as a tithe the fruit of my labor-pains. This first-born is my first-fruit, and this tenth one, my last labor-pain. Both are consecrated to You by the law and are Your offerings. Therefore may sanctification come upon this my first-fruit and upon this my tenth," pointing with her demonstrative words to her daughter and her son. So then, having ceased to bless, she also ceased to live, having instructed her children to lay her body in their father's tomb. And they, having fulfilled her command, held to a higher philosophy, always competing against their own life and concealing their past achievements with their subsequent ones.
14 Meanwhile, Basil, great among the saints, was appointed leader of the great church of the Caesareans; who led his brother to the rank of the priesthood in the presbytery, having consecrated him through his own mystical rites. And at this, their life again progressed to what was more venerable and more holy, philosophy being enhanced by the priesthood. Eight years after this had passed, in the ninth year, Basil, renowned throughout the whole world, passed from among men to God, becoming a common cause of grief for his homeland and for the world. And she, hearing the misfortune from afar by report, suffered in her soul at so great a loss (for how could that suffering not touch her too, which even the enemies of the truth felt?). Just as they say the testing of gold happens in different crucibles, so that if anything should escape the first smelting, it may be separated in the second, and again in the last, all the impurity mixed in the material is cleansed away, and the most accurate test of proven gold is if, having passed through every furnace, it casts off no impurity; something of this sort also happened in her case, as her lofty mind was tested by the various assaults of sorrows, so that the unadulterated and unhumbled quality of her soul was revealed from every side, first in the passing of her other brother, after this in the separation from her mother, and third when the common good of their family, Basil, was separated from human life. She remained, therefore, like some unconquerable athlete, nowhere giving way to the assault of misfortunes.

ὡς μηδενὸς καθηγουμένου διὰ πάσης ἀκριβείας ἑκάστου τὴν ἐπιστήμην κατωρθωκέναι, ὧν χρόνῳ καὶ πόνῳ τοῖς πολλοῖς ἡ μάθησις παραγίνεται. Οὗτος τοίνυν τῆς περὶ τοὺς ἔξωθεν τῶν λόγων ἀσχολίας ὑπεριδών, ἱκανὴν δὲ διδάσκαλον παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ μαθήματος τὴν φύσιν ἔχων ἀεί τε πρὸς τὴν ἀδελφὴν βλέπων καὶ σκοπὸν ἀγαθοῦ παντὸς ἐκείνην ποιούμενος εἰς τοσοῦτον ἐπέδωκεν ἀρετῆς, ὡς μηδὲν ἔλαττον τοῦ μεγάλου Βασι λείου δοκεῖν ἔχειν ἐν τοῖς κατ' ἀρετὴν προτερήμασιν. Ταῦτα μὲν ἐν τῷ μετὰ ταῦτα βίῳ· τότε δὲ ἀντὶ πάντων ἦν τῇ ἀδελ φῇ καὶ τῇ μητρὶ συνεργῶν αὐταῖς πρὸς τὴν ἀγγελικὴν ἐκείνην ζωήν. Ὅς ποτε καὶ σιτολειψίας χαλεπῆς γεγενημένης καὶ πολλῶν πανταχόθεν κατὰ φήμην τῆς εὐποιίας πρὸς τὴν ἐσχατιάν, ἐν ᾗ κατῴκουν, ἐπιρρεόντων τοσοῦτον δι' ἐπινοιῶν τὰς τροφὰς ἐπλεόνασεν, ὡς τῷ πλήθει τῶν ἐπι φοιτώντων πόλιν εἶναι τὴν ἐρημίαν δοκεῖν.
13 Ἐν τούτῳ εἰς γῆρας λιπαρὸν προελθοῦσα ἡ μήτηρ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν μετανίστατο, ἐν ταῖς ἀμφοτέρων τῶν τέκνων χερσὶ τὸν βίον ἑαυτῆς ἀναπαύσασα. Ἧς ἄξιον τὴν τῆς εὐλογίας ἱστορῆσαι φωνήν, ᾗ ἐπὶ τῶν τέκνων ἐχρήσατο, τῶν τε μὴ παρόντων ἑκάστου κατὰ τὸ πρόσφορον ἐπιμνησθεῖσα, ὡς μηδένα γενέσθαι τῆς εὐλογίας ἀπόκληρον, καὶ δια φερόντως τοὺς παρόντας αὐτῇ τῷ θεῷ διὰ προσευχῆς παραθεμένη. Παρακαθημένων γὰρ αὐτῇ κατὰ τὸ πλάγιον ἐφ' ἑκάτερα τῆς κλίνης τῶν δύο τούτων ἑκατέρᾳ χειρὶ ἐφαψαμένη τῶν τέκνων ταῦτα πρὸς τὸν θεὸν εἶπεν ἐν τε λευταίαις φωναῖς· «Σοί, κύριε, καὶ ἀπάρχομαι καὶ ἀπο δεκατῶ τὸν καρπὸν τῶν ὠδίνων. Ἀπαρχή μοι ἡ πρωτότοκος αὕτη καὶ ἐπιδέκατος οὗτος, ἡ τελευταία ὠδίς. Σοὶ δὲ ἀφιέ ρωται παρὰ τοῦ νόμου ἀμφότερα καὶ σά ἐστιν ἀναθήματα. Οὐκοῦν ἔλθοι ὁ ἁγιασμὸς ἐπί τε τὴν ἀπαρχήν μου ταύτην καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ἐπιδέκατον τοῦτο», δείξασα ταῖς δεικτικαῖς φωναῖς τὴν θυγατέρα καὶ τὸν παῖδα. Ἡ μὲν οὖν τοῦ εὐλογεῖν παυσαμένη καὶ τοῦ ζῆν ἐπαύσατο, τοῖς παισὶν ἐπισκήψασα τὸ τῇ πατρῴᾳ σορῷ καὶ τὸ ἐκείνης ἐναποθέσθαι σῶμα. Οἱ δὲ πληρώσαντες τὸ διατεταγμένον ὑψηλότερον εἴχοντο τῆς φιλοσοφίας, ἀεὶ πρὸς τὸν ἴδιον διαμιλλώμενοι βίον καὶ τὰ φθάσαντα τῶν κατορθωμάτων τοῖς ἐφεξῆς ἀπο κρύπτοντες.
14 Ἐν τούτῳ ὁ πολὺς ἐν ἁγίοις Βασίλειος τῆς μεγάλης Καισαρέων ἐκκλησίας ἀνεδείχθη προστάτης· ὃς ἐπὶ τὸν κλῆρον τῆς ἐν τῷ πρεσβυτερίῳ ἱερωσύνης τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἄγει ταῖς μυστικαῖς ἑαυτοῦ ἱερουργίαις ἀφιερώσας. Καὶ ἐν τούτῳ πάλιν αὐτοῖς ἐπὶ τὸ σεμνότερόν τε καὶ ἁγιώτερον προῄει ὁ βίος τῇ ἱερωσύνῃ τῆς φιλοσοφίας ἐπαυξηθείσης. Ὀκτὼ δὲ μετὰ τοῦτο διαγενομένων ἐτῶν τῷ ἐνάτῳ ἐνιαυ τῷ ὁ κατὰ πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην ὀνομαστὸς Βασίλειος ἐξ ἀνθρώπων πρὸς τὸν θεὸν μετοικίζεται κοινὴ πένθους ἀφορμὴ τῇ πατρίδι καὶ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ γενόμενος. Ἡ δὲ πόρρω θεν ἐκ φήμης ἀκούσασα τὴν συμφορὰν ἔπαθε μὲν τὴν ψυχὴν ἐπὶ τῇ τοσαύτῃ ζημίᾳ (πῶς γὰρ οὐκ ἤμελλεν ἅπτεσθαι κἀκείνης τὸ πάθος, οὗ καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐπῄ σθοντο;). Καθάπερ δὲ τὴν τοῦ χρυσοῦ φασι δοκιμασίαν ἐν διαφόροις γίνεσθαι χωνευτηρίοις, ὡς εἴ τι τὴν πρώτην διαφύγοι χωνείαν, ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ διακριθῆναι, καὶ πάλιν ἐν τῇ τελευταίᾳ πάντα τὸν ἐμμεμιγμένον ῥύπον τῇ ὕλῃ ἀπο καθαίρεσθαι, τὴν δὲ ἀκριβεστάτην εἶναι βάσανον τοῦ δοκίμου χρυσοῦ, εἰ διὰ πάσης διεξελθὼν χοάνης μηδένα ῥύπον ἀποποιήσειε· τοιοῦτόν τι καὶ ἐπ' ἐκείνης συνέβη, ταῖς διαφόροις τῶν λυπηρῶν προσβολαῖς τῆς ὑψηλῆς διανοίας βασανισθείσης πανταχόθεν ἀναδειχθῆναι τὸ τῆς ψυχῆς ἀκιβδήλευτόν τε καὶ ἀταπείνωτον, πρότερον μὲν ἐν τῇ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τοῦ ἄλλου μεταστάσει, μετὰ ταῦτα δὲ ἐν τῷ χωρισμῷ τῆς μητρός, ἐκ τρίτου δὲ ὅτε τὸ κοινὸν τῆς γενεᾶς καλόν, Βασίλειος, τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης ζωῆς ἐχωρίζετο. Ἔμεινε τοίνυν καθάπερ τις ἀθλητὴς ἀκαταγώνιστος, οὐδα μοῦ τῇ προσβολῇ τῶν συμφορῶν ἐποκλάσασα.
