he was seeking an opportunity how he might be recognized by his brothers. For he only saw them, and his brother Benjamin by the same mother, the guileless, the pure, the last cluster of the paternal vine, the one who had not tasted brotherly hatred, the brother both in nature and in mind, and immediately wetting his cheeks with tears of great joy, he cried out saying: I am Joseph your brother; now let it not seem hard to you. O the strange events! The one without fault makes a defense as if at fault. I am Joseph, O brothers. If you did not bow down unwillingly, my dreams were false; if my sheaf was not set upright, you did well to sharpen the sickle of brotherly hatred. Learn even so, O brothers, that everyone who hopes in the Lord will not be put to shame. You deprived me of a simple tunic; behold, I am clothed in purple; you threw me in a pit; behold, I ride in a gold-inlaid chariot; you sold me as a slave; behold, I have been declared a king; I dwelt in a prison; behold, I live in a palace; I wore a collar; behold, I wear a diadem of precious stones. It is fitting then to truly say the words of the blessed Paul: For those who love God all things work together for good, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

ἀφορμὴν ἐζήτει πῶς ἀναγνωρισθῇ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς. Μόνον γὰρ ἐθεάσατο τούτους, καὶ τὸν ὁμομήτριον ἀδελφὸν Βενιαμὶν, τὸν ἄκακον, τὸν ἀκέραιον, τὸν ἔσχατον τῆς πατρικῆς ἀμπέλου βότρυν, τὸν ἄγευστον τῆς μισαδελφίας, τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ τῇ φύσει καὶ τῇ γνώμῃ, εὐθέως περιχαρέσι δάκρυσι τὰς παρειὰς νοτίσας, ἀνεβόησε λέγων· Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ὑμέτερος ἀδελφός· νῦν δὲ μὴ σκληρὸν ὑμῖν φανήτω. Ὢ τῶν ξένων πραγμάτων! ὁ ἀνεύθυνος ὡς ὑπεύθυνος ἀπολογεῖται. Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰωσὴφ, ὦ ἀδελφοί. Εἰ μὴ ἄκοντες προσεκυνήσατε, ψευδῆ μου τὰ ὀνείρατα· εἰ μὴ ἀνωρθώθη τὸ ἐμὸν δράγμα, καλῶς τὸ δρέπανον τῆς μισαδελφίας ὠξύνατε. Μάθετε κἂν οὕτως, ὦ ἀδελφοὶ, ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ἐλπίζων ἐπὶ Κύριον οὐ καταισχύνεται. Λιτοῦ με χιτῶνος ἐστερήσατε· ἴδε, πορφύραν περιβέβλημαι· ἐν λάκκῳ με ἐχώσατε· ἴδε, ἐν ἅρματι χρυσοκολλήτῳ ἐποχοῦμαι· ὡς δοῦλον ἐπωλήσατε· ἴδε, βασιλεὺς ἀναδέδειγμαι· φυλακὴν ᾤκησα· ἴδε, ἐν βασιλείοις ἀναστρέφομαι· κλοιὸν ἐφόρεσα· ἴδε, διάδημα ἐκ λίθων τιμίων περίκειμαι. Εὔκαιρον οὖν εἰπεῖν ἀληθῶς τὰ τοῦ μακαρίου Παύλου· Τοῖς ἀγαπῶσι τὸν Θεὸν πάντα συνεργεῖ εἰς ἀγαθὸν, ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. Ἀμήν.
