in death who remembers You? In Hades who will give thanks to You? Truly, no one. For even if we are troubled ten thousand times, and pray many things, yet no one is delivered. For this reason we especially call blessed the infants who die; for this reason we all say: Would that we had died as infants! Therefore, let us not be disheartened when we see in our own children what we desire for ourselves. For to us the cup of death is perilous, but to infants it is salvific; and what is dreaded by all is praiseworthy for them; and what for us is the beginning of punishment there, is for them the beginning of salvation. For what will they be held to account, who have had no experience of sin at all? For what will they be punished, who did not attain to the knowledge of good or evil? O the blessed falling asleep of blessed infants! O death of the undefiled, the beginning of what is truly eternal life! O end that is the beginning of endless joy!
But what do the faint-hearted say? I had, he says, an only-begotten child, at once handsome and well-born; he was the succession of my family, he was the heir of my substance, he was the comfort of my despondency, he was the staff of my old age, he was the boast of his country, he was the branch of my root, wholly bright in appearance, wholly affable and dexterous, easy to speak to, desirable to his own and to strangers, to those who saw and those who heard; this one, so great, was suddenly snatched from my hands, and he who was seen a short while ago, is not present to be seen, but having left the one who begot him, he has gone to the one who formed him; leaving me who raised him, he has journeyed to the one who called him; separated from his mother's womb, he has descended into the tomb of earth, the mother of all.
Shall I not weep for him, tell me? Shall I not mourn, nor seek him as the apple of my eye? I cannot, he says, I cannot; for even if you should bring me ten thousand doctrines, even if you should try ten thousand times to persuade parents not to mourn their own children, you will not persuade 60.729 me, because of God who ordained it so, and bound the bond of nature, and placed the fire for children within the bowels of parents. This is not what I say, O man, nor do I legislate this, that one should not weep at all for their children; for even if I should say it, I speak an impossibility. For I too obey the laws of nature, and I do not set myself against the time for sympathy; since I too am mortal, since I too was born of a mother, and am of the same nature. I know the lamentation of fathers, I know the groaning of mothers, I know their sea of despondency, I know the distress of their trouble; I understand their inward imagining of their children, how they paint within themselves the child who is not present as if he were present, thinking of their image with tears, placing their manners and words and all their deeds before their eyes. But the wondrous Job was not so; for when his children and servants and oxen and camels and all his possessions came to ruin, he was not disturbed, he did not blaspheme, as many do, but he arose, and falling upon the earth from which he was taken, worshipping the Master, he said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall depart there. The Lord has given, the Lord has taken away; as it seemed good to the Lord, so also it has come to pass. Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever. I am a servant, and I am subject, and I do not set myself against my maker; for the matter is not strange; the children have died, but they have not perished. For what shepherd does not have authority over his flock? The good shepherd has chosen his sheep. In a little while, we too shall depart. Let us also imitate him, and not lament so immoderately. Let us weep as believers, and not behave unseemly as unbelievers; as Christ wept for Lazarus, so let us weep; for showing you measures and limits, he wept. For how could he have wept for one whom he was about to raise after a little while? But it was so that you might learn how far to weep, so that we might both show the sympathy of nature and reject the imitation of the unbelievers; and furthermore that

Μὴ οὖν, ὅπερ ἡμεῖς ἐπιθυμοῦμεν, ὁρῶντες ἐν τοῖς ἰδίοις τέκνοις, ἀθυμῶμεν. Τὸ γὰρ ἡμῖν τοῦ θανάτου ποτήριον ἐπικίνδυνόν ἐστι, παρὰ δὲ τοῖς νηπίοις σωτήριον· καὶ τὸ παρὰ πᾶσι φρικτὸν, ἔστιν ἐκείνοις ἐπαινετόν· καὶ ὅπερ ἡμεῖς ἔχομεν εἰς ἀρχὴν τῆς ἐκεῖ τιμωρίας, ἔστι παρ' ἐκείνοις ἀρχὴ σωτηρίας. Ὑπὲρ τίνος γὰρ λογοθετηθῶσιν οἱ μηδὲ ὅλως ἁμαρτίας δεξάμενοι πεῖραν; ὑπὲρ τίνος τιμωρηθῶσιν οἱ καλοῦ ἢ κακοῦ γνῶσιν μὴ φθάνοντες; Ὢ μακαρίων νηπίων μακαρία καὶ ἡ κοίμησις! ὢ θάνατος ἀφθόρων, ἀρχὴ τῆς ὄντως ζωῆς αἰωνίου ὑπαρχούσης! ὢ τέλος ἀρχὴ ἀτελευτήτου χαρᾶς!
Ἀλλὰ τί φασιν οἱ ὀλιγόψυχοι; Παῖς μοι, φησὶν, ὑπῆρχε μονογενὴς ἅμα καὶ εὐειδὴς καὶ εὐγενής· οὗτος ἦν τοῦ ἐμοῦ γένους ἡ διαδοχὴ, οὗτος ἦν τῆς οὐσίας ὁ κληρονόμος, οὗτος τῆς ἐμῆς ἀθυμίας ἡ παραμυθία, οὗτός μου ἦν τοῦ γήρους ἡ βακτηρία, οὗτος τῆς πατρίδος τὸ καύχημα, οὗτος τῆς ἐμῆς ῥίζης ὁ κλάδος, ὅλος τῷ εἴδει φαιδρὸς ὑπάρχων, ὅλος προσηνὴς καὶ ἐπιδέξιος, εὐπροσήγορος, ἐπιθυμητὸς τοῖς ἰδίοις καὶ τοῖς ξένοις, τοῖς ὁρῶσι καὶ τοῖς ἀκούουσιν· οὗτος ὁ τοσοῦτος ἐξαίφνης ἀνάρπαστος τῶν ἐμῶν χειρῶν ἐπήρθη, καὶ ὁ πρὸ μικροῦ ὁρώμενος, οὐ πάρεστι θεωρούμενος, ἀλλὰ καταλιπὼν τὸν γεννήσαντα, ἀπῆλθε πρὸς τὸν πλάσαντα· ἐάσας με τὸν θρέψαντα, ἐπορεύθη πρὸς τὸν καλέσαντα· χωρισθεὶς σπλάγχνων μητρὸς, κατῆλθεν εἰς μνῆμα γῆς τῆς πάντων μητρός.
Οὐ μὴ κλαύσω τοῦτον, εἰπέ μοι; μὴ θρηνήσω, μηδὲ ὡς κόρην ὀφθαλμοῦ ζητήσω; Οὐ δύναμαι, φησὶν, οὐ δύναμαι· κἂν γὰρ μυρία εἰσενέγκῃς μοι δόγματα, κἂν μυριάκις παραινεῖν δοκιμάσῃς τοῦ μὴ θρηνεῖν γονεῖς τὰ ἑαυτῶν τέκνα, οὐ πεί60.729 σεις, διὰ τὸν Θεὸν τὸν ὁρίσαντα οὕτω, καὶ τὸν δεσμὸν τῆς φύσεως συνδήσαντα, καὶ τὸ πῦρ πρὸς τὰ τέκνα περὶ τῶν σπλάγχνων τῶν γονέων ἐνθήσαντα. Οὐ τοῦτο λέγω, ἄνθρωπε, οὐδὲ τοῦτο νομοθετῶ, μηδὲ ὅλως δακρύειν ἐπὶ τοῖς τέκνοις· κἂν γὰρ εἴπω, ἀδύνατον λέγω. Καὶ γὰρ κἀγὼ νόμοις φύσεως πείθομαι, καὶ τῷ καιρῷ τῆς συμπαθείας οὐκ ἀντιτάσσομαι· ἐπεὶ κἀγὼ βροτὸς, ἐπεὶ κἀγὼ ἐκ μητρὸς γεγένημαι, καὶ τῆς αὐτῆς ὑπάρχω φύσεως. Οἶδα πατέρων τὸν ὀδυρμὸν, οἶδα μητέρων τὸν στεναγμὸν, οἶδα αὐτῶν τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς ἀθυμίας, οἶδα αὐτῶν τῆς ταραχῆς τὴν ἀδημονίαν· ἐπίσταμαι τὴν ἔνδον αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τέκνοις φαντασίαν, πῶς ὡς παρόντα τὸν οὐ παρόντα παῖδα ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἀναζωγραφοῦσι, τὴν ἐκείνων εἰκόνα σὺν δάκρυσιν ἐννοούμενοι, τὰ ἐκείνων ἤθη καὶ ῥήματα καὶ πράγματα πάντα κατ' ὀφθαλμοὺς τιθέντες. Ἀλλ' ὁ Ἰὼβ ὁ θαυμάσιος οὐχ οὕτως· ἐκείνου γὰρ τῶν τέκνων καὶ παίδων καὶ βοῶν καὶ καμήλων καὶ πάντων τῶν προσόντων αὐτῷ πρὸς ὄλεθρον γενομένων, οὐκ ἐθορυβήθη, οὐκ ἐδυσφήμησεν, ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ, ἀλλ' ἀνίστατο, καὶ εἰς τὴν γῆν πεσὼν, ἐξ ἧς ἐλήφθη, τῷ ∆εσπότῃ προσκυνῶν ἔλεγεν· Αὐτὸς γυμνὸς ἐξῆλθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου, γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἐκεῖ. Ὁ Κύριος ἔδωκεν, ὁ Κύριος ἀφείλατο· ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ ἔδοξε, οὕτω καὶ ἐγένετο. Εἴη τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου εὐλογημένον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. ∆οῦλός εἰμι, καὶ ὑπόκειμαι, καὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι οὐκ ἀντιτάσσομαι· οὐ γὰρ ξένον τὸ πρᾶγμα· τέθνηκαν οἱ παῖδες. ἀλλ' οὐκ ἀπόλωλαν. Ποῖος γὰρ ποιμὴν οὐκ ἐξουσιάζει ἐν τῷ ποιμνίῳ αὐτοῦ; Ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλὸς ἐξελέξατο τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ. Μικρὸν, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀπερχόμεθα. Τοῦτον καὶ ἡμεῖς μιμησώμεθα, καὶ μὴ οὕτως ἀμέτρως ὀδυρώμεθα. Ὡς πιστοὶ κλαύσωμεν, καὶ μὴ ὡς ἄπιστοι ἀσχημονήσωμεν· ὡς ὁ Χριστὸς τὸν Λάζαρον ἔκλαυσεν, οὕτω κλαύσωμεν· σοὶ γὰρ μέτρα καὶ ὅρους δεικνύων, ἐδάκρυσε. Πῶς γὰρ δακρύειν ἔχρησεν, ὃν μετ' ὀλίγον ἐγείρειν ἔμελλεν; Ἀλλ' ἵνα σὺ μάθῃς μέχρι πόσου δακρύειν, ἵνα καὶ τὸ τῆς φύσεως συμπαθὲς ἐνδειξώμεθα, καὶ τὴν τῶν ἀπίστων μίμησιν ἀποκρουσώμεθα· λοιπὸν δὲ κἀκεῖνο
