Do you see that neither a woman’s nature, nor a trade, nor poverty is a hindrance on the path of virtue? Do you see a hospitable woman and man receiving the Apostle not only with their table, but also with their blood? For what if they were not slain? But they fulfilled their part, and while living they became martyrs, and martyrs many times, always being ready to be slain for Paul. For he did not say, "who spent money," "who opened their house," but, what was greater than all, he brings forward murder, slaughter, so that he might say that, "They even chose to be beheaded for my sake." Let those who are now rich hear this, who with difficulty give an obol to the saints; those ones shared even their blood, and laid down their very life, so that they might save and care for the saint; but those present would not readily give up even the smallest part of their own substance to those in need; but Priscilla and Aquila gave up their money and their bodies and their very life. Do you see how great a thing is a philosophic woman, how great a thing is a man living both in poverty and a trade? Let us indeed emulate these, let us imitate these, and scorning present things, let us give up everything for the things that seem good to God, so that we may also 63.491 obtain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom, and 63.492 with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
