succeeding in those things; if you marvel and are grieved, because you fall very far short of them, it is possible for you to have fellowship with them in another way, by serving, by ministering to them. For this also is a part of God's love 62.185 for humanity, that those who are more remiss and unable to undertake the hardened and rough and strict life, He leads these too by another way again into the same rank as them. And this Paul calls fellowship. They have fellowship with us, he says, in carnal things, we have fellowship with them in spiritual things. For if God for small and worthless things bestows a kingdom, His servants also for small and tangible things impart spiritual things; or rather, it is He Himself who gives both the one and the other through them. You cannot fast, nor be a solitary, nor sleep on the ground, nor keep vigil all night? It is possible for you to receive the reward for all these things, if you handle the matter in another way, by ministering to and giving rest to and anointing continually the one who labors in these things, and by lightening his toil from them. He stands fighting, he also receives wounds; you care for him returning from the contest, receive him with open hands, cool his sweat by giving rest, exhort, console, restore his wearied soul. If with such zeal we minister to the saints, we shall be partakers of their rewards. This Christ also says; Make for yourselves friends from the mammon of unrighteousness, that they may receive you into their eternal tents. Do you see how these have become partakers? From the first day, he says, until now. For this reason I rejoice, he says. In your fellowship. And I rejoice not for the past only, but also for the future; for from the past I conjecture those things also. Being confident of this very thing, he says, that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. 3. See how he teaches them also to be moderate. For since he testified to a great thing for them, lest they should suffer anything human, he immediately instructs them to refer both the past and the future to Christ; how? For he did not say, Being confident that as you began, so you will also finish, but what? He who began a good work in you will complete it; neither did he deprive them of the achievement; for he said, I rejoice in your fellowship, that is, as of their own achieving; nor did he say the achievements were theirs alone, but principally God’s; For I am confident, he says, that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; that is, God. And not concerning you alone, he says, am I so disposed, but also concerning those from among you. For this is no small praise, that God works in someone. For if He is not a respecter of persons, as indeed He is not, but looking to the purpose, He cooperates with us in our achievements, it is clear that we are the cause of drawing Him to us. So not even in this way did he deprive them of praise; since if He worked simply, nothing would have prevented even Greeks and all men from being worked in, if He moved us like wood and stones, and did not seek what is from us. So by saying, God will complete it, this again becomes a praise for them, for having drawn the grace of God to cooperate with them in transcending human nature. And in another way 62.186 it is a praise, that your achievements are such as to be not human, but to need the impulse of God. And if God will complete it, there will not be much toil, but one must be confident, as accomplishing all things easily, since they are helped by Him. Just as it is right for me to think this concerning all of you, because I have you in my heart, both in my bonds, and in my defense, and confirmation of the Gospel, all of you being partakers with me of grace
