of Rebecca, nor of Rachel; and yet these too were barren, and these too were old, and what happened was a wonder; but the narratives were ancient. But new and recent things which happen in our own generation are more accustomed to lead us to faith in wonders than ancient ones. For this reason, leaving them aside, he proposed that she consider the case of her kinswoman Elizabeth, so that from her case he might lead her to her own birth, that most awesome and venerable one. For the birth from the barren woman was midway between ours and the Lord's, less than that of the Virgin, but greater than ours. For this reason, as if by a bridge, with Elizabeth in the middle, he leads the Virgin's mind from natural birth pangs to those that are above nature. 9. I wanted to say more, and to teach you other reasons why Rebecca and Rachel were barren; but the time does not permit, pressing the discourse on toward the power of prayer. For it was for this reason that we raised all these topics, that you might learn how the prayer of Isaac, and a prayer of so long a time, loosed the barrenness of his wife. Isaac, it says, prayed concerning Rebecca his wife, and God heard him. For do not think that he called upon God and was immediately heard; for he spent a long time praying to God. And if you wish to learn how long, I will tell you this with accuracy. He spent the number of twenty years praying to God. From where is this clear? From the sequence itself. For Scripture, wishing to show the faith and the patience and the wisdom of the righteous man, did not keep silent about the time, but made it clear to us, though covertly, so as to rouse our indolence, yet it did not allow it to be hidden. Listen, then, how it revealed the time to us covertly. Isaac was forty years old, it says, when he took Rebecca, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian. Have you learned how many years old he was when he took his wife? He was forty years old, it says, when he took Rebecca. But since we have learned how many years old he was when he married his wife, let us also learn when he finally became a father, and how many years old he was then, when he begot Jacob; and we shall be able to see how long a time his wife remained barren, and that he prayed to God all this time. How many years old, then, was he, when he begot Jacob? Jacob came out, it says, grasping with his right hand the heel of his brother; for this reason he called him Jacob, and the other Esau. And Isaac was sixty years old when he begot them. If, then, when he took Rebecca he was forty years old, but when he begot his sons, sixty, it is very clear that his wife remained barren for twenty years in between, 51.362 and all this time Isaac was praying to God. 10. Are we not then ashamed, nor do we cover our faces, when we see the righteous man persevering for twenty years and not giving up; while we often give up and become disheartened after the first or second request? And yet he had great confidence before God, and still he was not disheartened at the delay of the gift, but remained persevering; while we, full of countless sins, living with an evil conscience, showing no goodwill towards the Master, if we are not heard before we even speak, we are restless, we despair, we abandon the request; for this reason we always depart with empty hands. Who has besought God for twenty years for one thing, like this righteous man? Or rather, who has for only twenty months? Yesterday, then, I was saying that there are many who pray with indolence, and yawning, and stretching, and constantly turning around, and treating their prayers with all neglect; but today I have found another harm befalling prayers, more destructive than that one. For many, casting themselves prostrate, and striking the ground with their foreheads, and pouring forth hot tears, and groaning bitterly from within, and stretching out their hands, and showing great earnestness, use this fervor and zeal against their own salvation. Τίς εἴκοσιν ἔτη ὑπὲρ ἑνὸς πράγματος παρεκάλεσε τὸν Θεὸν, καθάπερ οὗτος ὁ δίκαιος; μᾶλλον δὲ τίς εἴκοσι μῆνας μόνους; Χθὲς μὲν οὖν ἔλεγον, ὅτι πολλοί εἰσιν οἱ μετὰ ῥᾳθυμίας εὐχόμενοι, καὶ χασμώμενοι, καὶ διατεινόμενοι, καὶ μεταστρεφόμενοι συνεχῶς, καὶ ὀλιγωρίᾳ πάσῃ περὶ τὰς εὐχὰς κεχρημένοι· σήμερον δὲ καὶ ἑτέραν βλάβην εὗρον ταῖς εὐχαῖς προσγινομένην ὀλεθριωτέραν ἐκείνης. Πολλοὶ γὰρ πρηνεῖς ἑαυτοὺς ῥιπτοῦντες, καὶ τῷ μετώπῳ τὴν γῆν τύπτοντες, καὶ θερμὰ προχέοντες δάκρυα, καὶ πικρὸν κάτωθεν στενάζοντες, καὶ τὰς χεῖρας ἐκτείνοντες, καὶ πολλὴν σπουδὴν ἐπιδεικνύμενοι, τῇ θερμότητι ταύτῃ καὶ τῇ προθυμίᾳ κατὰ τῆς οἰκείας κέχρηνται σωτηρίας.
