Meanwhile Theodora, fearing for Antonina, for she had heard all that had befallen her, summoned Belisarius with 3.5 her to Byzantium. But Photius, hearing this, sent Theodosius to Cilicia, where his bodyguards and shield-bearers happened to be wintering, instructing the escorts to convey this man most secretly, and when they arrived in Cilicia, to keep him in the closest possible confinement, letting no one know where on earth he was. He himself, along with Calligonus and the money of Theodosius, which was a considerable 3.6 sum, came to Byzantium. But he, although strained by the torture, resolved to hold fast to his oaths, a man who had previously been sickly and dissolute, and zealous in the care of his body, and inexperi3.14 enced in either insolence or hardship. And having found Calligonus there, she handed him over to her; and having summoned Theodosius to Byzantium, when he arrived, she immediately hid him in the Palace, and on the 3.16 next day, having sent for Antonina, "O dearest Patricia," she said, "a pearl has fallen into my hands the day before, such as no man has ever seen. And if you wish, I would not begrudge you this sight, 3.17 but will show it." And she, not understanding what was happening, begged her earnestly to show her the pearl. But she brought Theodosius out from the chamber of one of the 3.18 eunuchs and showed him. And Antonina at first, becoming exceedingly overjoyed, remained speechless from pleasure, and confessed that she had done her many favors, calling her a savior and benefactress and truly a mistress. 3.19 But this Theodosius the empress kept in the Palace and deemed him worthy of luxury and all other comfort, and she threatened that she would make him a general of the Romans before 3.20 long. But a prior justice, seizing him with a disease of 3.21 dysentery, removed him from mankind.
