are punished. Those who meddle with the beauty of another, are deprived of the beauty of paradise. Those who rejoice at the fall of others, cause their own fall. Those who desire what belongs to others, betray their own and are lost. The vainglorious, and the proud and men-pleasers, are condemned with the devil. The hypocrites, 77.1088 are punished with Satan. Those who nourish the body beyond what is necessary, starve the soul; those who sin knowingly and without necessity, and do not repent, are punished with the unbelievers; those who say, "Let us sin in youth, and repent in old age," are mocked by demons, and are ridiculed, and as they sin willingly, they are not deemed worthy of repentance, but are reaped in their youth by the scythe of death; like Ammon the king of Israel, who also provoked God through his wicked thoughts, and his profane intentions. For those who say, "Let us sin today, and repent tomorrow," such people have become futile in their thinking; and their foolish heart was darkened, and they lost today, having corrupted and defiled the body, and polluted the soul, and darkened the mind, and clouded the intellect, and mired the conscience; but tomorrow was stolen from them; For those who do not weep for the fall of fornication, and do not mourn for the mire of adultery, and do not lament for the pitfall of homosexuality, and do not wail for effeminacy, cannot repent with their whole soul for past sins, nor correct future ones. For those who do not seek what they have lost, have not even acquired what is being saved. Those who do not reckon the mixture of the deposit, also lose the principal. Those who do not labor intelligently, and are not vigilant in prayers, are taken captive by shameful thoughts; and those taken captive, serve evil habit, unwillingly and not wanting to. Those who do not keep vigil soberly in psalmody, are robbed. Those who are not watchful in the hearing of the divine Scriptures, but give themselves over to the sleep of negligence, will be shut out with the five foolish virgins. Those who cast away the weapons of fasting, are tripped up by gluttony, and are destroyed by the sin of fornication and adultery; those who have not kept the commandments of God, are wounded by demons, and are condemned in the Gehenna of fire.
Those who distance themselves from the Church and from communion, become enemies of God, and friends of demons. Let every heresy of the godless heretics be ashamed, let the race of the unbelievers be covered, let the synagogue of the Jews perish, let the unclean mouths of the God-denying Hebrews be stopped, when he who tests the hearts, and examines the kidneys, and is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of flesh, and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts, and intentions, sits in judgment. Then indeed, then you will see not some few out of many, but all being revealed, and neither can the sheep's skin cover the wolf, nor the whitewashing of works hide the inner thought; for no creature is hidden from the one who judges, but all things are naked, and laid bare to his eyes. Let us not then set carnal passions against the commandments of God; let us humble vainglorious thoughts, let us rise up against the devil for battle, let us open the eyes of our intellect to vigilance, let us put to sleep the thoughts of sin; let us acquire unceasing prayer, a vigilant mind, an awakened intellect, an untroubled conscience, unending self-control, unhypocritical fasting, love without partiality, unadulterated purity, undefiled chastity, unfeigned humility, unceasing psalmody, reading without vainglory, genuflection without pride, continual supplication, a pure life, a true word, hospitality without grumbling, thankful patience, unquestioning almsgiving; let us banish short-temperedness, let us drive out anger, let us cast out despondency, the
