Whatever he himself said in prophecy, on that very day an angel appeared and confirmed his prophecy, just as it happened in the days of the anarchy, as it is written in Spharphotheeim, that is, in the book of Judges. But being a young man the prophet died and was gathered to his fathers in his field.

23. Zacharias another prophet and priest. This one was 24 the son of Joda the priest, and the father of John the baptist. This one King Herod killed next to the altar and the house of the Lord. And this one was from Jerusalem from the house of David, between the Elam from the house of the Lord. This one prophesied concerning the generation of Christ. There therefore they buried him in the house of God next to the temple of the Lord. From then on many portents and apparitions occurred in the temple and the priests were no longer able to see a vision of angels; nor to give oracles to the people in the Debir nor to inquire by the Ephod nor to be answered by the Urim, as before, until that day.

24. Simeon the priest; this one was from the tribe of Aaron. This one was divinely instructed by the holy spirit not to see death until he should see the Christ in the flesh. This one carried the Lord in his own arms. And he glorified God, saying: My eyes have seen your salvation. Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word in peace. And he died and was buried near the priests, an old man full of days.

<25.> John the baptist son of Zacharias and Elizabeth. 25 This one was from the tribe of Levi. This one revealed to us the lamb of God the son of the father who takes away the sin of the world. This one became for us an entrance to the kingdom of God. For no one born of women is greater than John the baptist. And he died, beheaded by Herod, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother. And there were also other prophets, whose names are written in their generations, in a book of the names of Israel, whom we have not mentioned.

ὅσα εἶπεν αὐτὸς ἐν προφητείᾳ, αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἄγγελος ὀφθεὶς ἐπεδευτέρωσεν αὐτοῦ τὴν προφητείαν, ὥσπερ ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς ἀναρχίας, ὡς γέγραπται ἐν Σφαρφωθείμ, τουτέστιν ἐν βίβλῳ Κριτῶν. Νέος δὲ ὢν ὁ προφήτης ἀπέθανε καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ αὐτοῦ.

κγʹ. Ζαχαρίας ἄλλος προφήτης καὶ ἱερεύς. Οὗτος ἦν 24 υἱὸς Ἰωδαὲ ἱερέως, πατὴρ δὲ Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ. Τοῦ-τον ἀπέκτεινεν Ἡρώδης ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐχόμενα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ τοῦ οἴκου κυρίου. Οὗτος δὲ ἦν ἐξ Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐξ οἴκου ∆αυίδ, ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ Ἐλὰμ ἐξ οἴκου κυρίου. Οὗτος ἐπροφήτευσε περὶ Χριστοῦ γενεᾶς. Ἐκεῖ οὖν αὐτὸν ἔθαψαν ἐν οἴκῳ θεοῦ ἐχόμενα ναοῦ κυρίου. Ἔκτοτε ἐγίνοντο τέρατα πολλὰ ἐν τῷ ναῷ καὶ φαντασίαι καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυον οἱ ἱερεῖς ἰδεῖν οὐκέτι ὀπτασίαν ἀγγέλων· οὐδὲ δοῦναι χρησμοὺς τῷ λαῷ ἐν ∆αβεὶρ οὔτε ἐρωτῆσαι ἐν τῷ Ἐφοὺδ οὔτε διὰ τῶν δήλων ἀποκριθῆναι, ἕως τὸ πρίν, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης.

κδʹ. Συμεὼν ὁ ἱερεύς· οὗτος ἦν ἐκ φυλῆς Ἀαρών. Οὗτος ἐχρηματίσθη ὑπὸ πνεύματος ἁγίου τοῦ μὴ ἰδεῖν θά-νατον ἕως ἂν ἴδῃ τὸν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκί. Οὗτος ἐβάστασε τὸν κύριον εἰς τὰς ἰδίας ἀγκάλας. Καὶ ἐδόξασε τὸν θεὸν εἰπών· εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου. Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου, δέσποτα, κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ. Ἀπέθανε δὲ καὶ ἐτάφη πλησίον τῶν ἱερέων πρε-σβύτης πλήρης ἡμερῶν.

<κεʹ.> Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστὴς υἱὸς Ζαχαρίου καὶ Ἐλι25 σάβετ. Οὗτος ἦν ἐκ φυλῆς Λευΐ. Οὗτος ἐδήλωσεν ἡμῖν τὸν ἀμνὸν τοῦ θεοῦ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ πατρὸς τὸν ἄραντα τοῦ κόσμου τὴν ἁμαρτίαν. Οὗτος εἴσοδος ἡμῖν ἐγένετο τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ βασιλείας. Οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν μείζων ἐστὶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ. Ἀπέθανε δὲ τμηθεὶς τὴν κεφαλὴν παρὰ Ἡρῴδου, διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἄλλοι δὲ προφῆται ἐγένοντο, ὧν τὰ ὀνόματα ἐγγέ-γραπται ἐν ταῖς αὐτῶν γενεαῖς, ἐν βίβλῳ ὀνομάτων Ἰσραήλ, ὧν οὐκ ἐμνημονεύσαμεν.
