having sent a wonder down to us, and about to hand it down to future time. But rather, you have brought forth things greater than these, and such as are fitting for those who genuinely honor him: an emptying of the body, an ascent of the soul, an avoidance of evil, an increase of virtue; the virgins, incorporeality; the women, propriety of virtue rather than of body; the young men, manliness against the passions; the old men, good counsel; those in power, good governance; those in command, gentleness; those in speech, reasonableness; let me say something of our own people, the priests, their initiation into the mysteries; the laity, their obedience; those in mourning, their consolation; those in prosperity, their fear; the rich, their generosity; the poor, their thanksgiving; all of you, battle array against the evil and bitter persecutor, that he may not strike when he appears, nor shoot his arrows while hidden, nor wage war as darkness, nor play as an angel of light, and steal you away to the abyss of destruction.
XIX. It is a terrible thing to be captured by the eyes, and to be wounded by the tongue, and to be enticed by hearing, and to be set on fire by boiling anger, and to be brought down by taste, and to be softened by touch, and to use the weapons of salvation as weapons of death; when it is necessary, having been fenced in by the shield of faith, to stand against the wiles of the Evil One; and having conquered with Christ, and having contended with the martyrs, to hear that great voice: Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom promised to you, where the dwelling of all who rejoice is, and of those who dance an indissoluble dance; where there is the sound of those celebrating 35.1193 a feast, and the voice of exultation, and a more perfect and purer illumination of divinity, of which the enjoyment now is in riddles and shadows. In these things Cyprian rejoices to be honored, rather than in all the others together; these things he both philosophized in his life when he was present, and when absent he commands them to all through our voice; which do not dishonor in any way, if you care at all for his endurance, and his struggles for the truth, and for me who am proclaiming these things. These are the first fruits of my words to you, O divine and sacred head; this is the prize for you, both of words and of your contest; not an Olympic olive crown, nor the trifling Delphic apples, nor an Isthmian pine, nor Nemean celery, by which unfortunate youths were honored; but a word, the most fitting thing of all for the servants of the Word; and if it is worthy of your contests and words, it is the gift of the Word. And may you watch over us graciously from above, and guide our speech and life, and shepherd this sacred flock, or shepherd it with us, directing all other things as far as possible toward what is best, and sending away the grievous wolves, the hunters of syllables and phrases; and granting to us a more perfect and more brilliant illumination of the Holy Trinity, of whom you are now a minister, whom we worship, whom we glorify, with whom we live as citizens, worshipping the Father in the Son, the Son in the Holy Spirit, before whom we too may stand hereafter sincere and blameless, of whom we too may partake, being perfect, perfectly, in Christ Himself our Lord, to whom be all glory, honor, and power, for ever and ever. ΙΘʹ. ∆εινὸν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἁλῶναι, καὶ γλώσσῃ τρωθῆναι, καὶ ἀκοῇ δελεασθῆναι, καὶ διὰ θυμοῦ ζέσαντος ἐμπρησθῆναι, καὶ γεύσει κατενεχθῆναι, καὶ ἁφῇ μαλακισθῆναι, καὶ τοῖς ὅπλοις τῆς σωτηρίας, ὅπλοις θανάτου χρήσασθαι· δέον τῷ θυρεῷ φραξαμένους τῆς πίστεως, στῆναι πρὸς τὰς μεθοδείας τοῦ Πονηροῦ· καὶ μετὰ Χριστοῦ νικήσαντας, καὶ μετὰ τῶν μαρτύρων ἀθλήσαντας, τῆς μεγάλης ἐκείνης ἀκοῦσαι φωνῆς· ∆εῦτε, οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἐπηγγελμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν, ἔνθα εὐφραινομένων πάντων ἡ κατοικία, καὶ χορευόντων χορείαν τὴν ἀκατάλυτον· ἔνθα ἦχος ἑορταζόν 35.1193 των, καὶ φωνὴ ἀγαλλιάσεως, καὶ θεότητος ἔλλαμψις τελεωτέρα καὶ καθωτέρα, ἧς νῦν ἐν αἰνίγμασι καὶ σκιαῖς ἡ ἀπόλαυσις. Τούτοις Κυπριανὸς χαίρει μᾶλλον τιμώμενος, ἢ πᾶσιν ὁμοῦ τοῖς ἄλλοις· ταῦτα καὶ παρὼν ἐφιλοσόφει τῷ βίῳ, καὶ ἀπὼν πᾶσι διακελεύεται διὰ τῆς ἡμετέρας φωνῆς· ἣν μηδαμῶς ἀτιμάσητε, εἴπερ τι μέλει τῆς ἐκείνου καρτερίας ὑμῖν, καὶ τῶν ἐκείνου περὶ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀγωνισμάτων, κἀμοῦ τοῦ ταῦτα πρεσβεύοντος. Αὗταί σοι τῶν ἐμῶν λόγων αἱ ἀπαρχαὶ, ὦ θεία καὶ ἱερὰ κεφαλή· τοῦτό σοι καὶ τῶν λόγων γέρας καὶ τῆς ἀθλήσεως· οὐ κότινος Ὀλυμπιακὸς, οὔτε μῆλα ∆ελφικὰ παίγνια, οὐδὲ Ἰσθμικὴ πίτυς, οὐδὲ Νεμαίας σέλινα, δι' ὧν ἔφηβοι δυστυχεῖς ἐτιμήθησαν· ἀλλὰ λόγος, τὸ πάντων οἰκειότατον τοῖς Λόγου θεραπευταῖς· εἰ δὲ καὶ τῶν σῶν ἄθλων καὶ λόγων ἄξιον, τοῦ Λόγου τὸ δῶρον. Σὺ δὲ ἡμᾶς ἐποπτεύοις ἄνωθεν ἵλεως, καὶ τὸν ἡμέτερον διεξάγοις λόγον καὶ βίον, καὶ τὸ ἱερὸν τοῦτο ποίμνιον ποιμαίνοις, ἢ συμποιμαίνοις, τά τε ἄλλα εὐθύνων ὡς οἷόν τε πρὸς τὸ βέλτιστον, καὶ τοὺς βαρεῖς λύκους ἀποπεμπόμενος, τοὺς θηρευτὰς τῶν συλλαβῶν καὶ τῶν λέξεων· καὶ τὴν τῆς ἁγίας Τριάδος ἔλλαμψιν, ἧς σὺ νῦν παραστάτης, τελεωτέραν τε καὶ λαμπροτέραν ἡμῖν χαριζόμενος, ἣν προσκυνοῦμεν, ἣν δοξάζομεν, ᾗ συμπολιτευόμεθα, προσκυνοῦντες Πατέρα ἐν Υἱῷ, Υἱὸν ἐν ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, ᾗ καὶ παρασταίημεν ὕστερον εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι, ἧς καὶ μεταλάβοιμεν τέλειοι τελείως, ἐν αὐτῷ Χριστῷ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ πᾶσα δόξα, τιμὴ καὶ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
