his bread; and let us rub him out from the living, and his name shall be remembered no more.” Zechariah, “And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.”

VII. Concerning the cross, and the darkness that occurred. “You shall see your life hanging before your eyes, and

you shall not believe, if anyone relates it to you. In the morning you will say: How has it become evening? and in the evening: How has it become morning?” Amos, “And it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord God, that the sun will go down at noon, and the light shall be darkened in the day.” Jeremiah, “The sun has gone down while it was yet day.” Isaiah, “All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a gainsaying and disobedient people.” And again, “Lift up an ensign to the nations.” And again, “And then these things will be accomplished, says the Lord, when wood shall be bent with woods, and shall rise up, and when blood 46.216 shall drip from wood.” Zechariah, “And it shall be, in that day there shall be no light; and that day shall be known to the Lord; and it is not day, and not night; but towards evening there shall be light.” David, “And I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none; and they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” Of which things they have nothing to show happened to David. And again, “They laid me in the lowest pit.” Zechariah, “Sword, awake against the shepherd, and against the man of my people; strike my shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.” And again, “And in that day, what is on the bridle of the horse shall be holy to the Lord.” VIII. Concerning the resurrection of Christ. David, foreseeing his resurrection, said: “Awake, why do you sleep, Lord? Arise, and do not cast us off forever.” And again, “Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.” And again, “Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for your name’s sake.” And again, “Arise, O Lord, judge the earth, for you shall inherit all nations.” Isaiah, “Now will I arise, says the Lord, now will I be glorified, now will I be exalted, now you will see, now you will be saved; the strength of your spirit shall be in vain.” Hosea, “And they will seek my face in their affliction, and will rise early to me, saying, Let us go and return to the Lord our God, for he has torn, and will heal us; he will strike, and will bind us up; 46.217 he will heal us after two days; on the third day we shall rise up before him, and we shall know, let us press on to know the Lord, we shall find him ready as the morning.” David, “For you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.” And again, “I have become as a man without help, free among the dead.” But who is free from death, if not God? For he became as a man without help, humbling his own flesh unto death, even death on a cross. Isaiah, “Behold, I lay in Zion a cornerstone, chosen, precious; and he who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For he has become “the head of the corner,” that is, of another building according to the Church, which is marvelous in our eyes.

IX. Concerning the ascension.

David, “God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.” But that concerning

our Savior it is spoken, Daniel says, “I beheld,” he says, “and behold, thrones were set, and the Ancient of days did sit.” And after some things, “And behold, with the clouds of heaven, one like the Son of man was coming; and he came even to the Ancient of days, and was brought near; to him was given the honor, and the rule, and the kingdom; and

Ζʹ.
