he says, “a tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning nor ever shall be.” For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, having conquered, they are crowned with incorruption. And for this reason, in the beast that is to come there is a recapitulation of all iniquity and all deceit, so that in it, having flowed together and been amassed, every apostate power may be cast into the furnace of fire. Suitably, therefore, his name will also have the number 666, recapitulating in itself all the display of wickedness before the flood which came from the angelic apostasy— for Noah was six hundred years old and the flood came upon the earth, wiping out the stature of the earth because of the counterfeit generation in the time of Adam—, and recapitulating all the idolatry since the flood, until the image set up by Nebuchadnezzar, which had a height of sixty cubits, and a breadth of six cubits; for that whole image was a prefiguration of the coming of the Antichrist. The 600 years of Noah, therefore, in whose time the flood occurred because of the apostasy, and the cubit-measurement of the image signify, as has been said, the number of the name, in which is summed up all the apostasy and iniquity and wickedness of the six thousand years. Since this is the case, and this number is found in all the reliable and ancient copies, and those who saw John face to face testify to it, and reason teaches us that the number of the name of the beast is according to the Greek method of calculation by the letters in it, I do not know how some have erred by following a private interpretation, and have rejected the middle number of the name, subtracting 50 units and wishing it to be one ten instead of six tens. But others, having accepted this without examination, some have used it simply and inappropriately, while others out of poor taste have even dared to search for names having the mistaken and erroneous number. But for those who did this simply and innocently, it is likely there will also be pardon from God; but as many as out of vainglory shall define names containing the erroneous number and shall define the name invented by them, such men will not go unpunished, having deceived both themselves and those who trusted them. And first, there is the harm in missing the truth and in supposing what is not to be what is; then, since he who adds to or takes away anything from the Scripture incurs no ordinary penalty, it is necessary for such a one to fall into it. And another, no ordinary danger will also follow for those who have falsely presumed to know the name of the Antichrist; for if they suppose it to be one thing, but he comes having another, they will be easily deceived by him, as if he whom they ought to guard against is not yet present. 25 It is therefore safer and less perilous to wait for the fulfillment of the prophecy than to guess and conjecture any names that occur, since many names can be found having the aforesaid number, and this question will nonetheless remain; for if there are many names found having the number, it will be asked which of them the coming one will bear. But that it is not for a lack of names 26 We therefore do not venture to make a confident pronouncement about the name of the Antichrist; for if it were necessary for his name to be proclaimed openly at the present time, it would have been spoken by him who also saw the apocalypse. For it was not seen a long time ago, but almost in our own generation, towards the end of Domitian's reign. 27 The souls depart to the place appointed for them by God, and there they sojourn until the resurrection, awaiting the resurrection; then, having received their bodies back and having risen completely, that is, bodily, just as the Lord also rose, so they will come into the presence of God. 28 And these things Papias also, a hearer of John, and a companion of Polycarp, an ancient man, testifies in writing in the fourth of his books; for there are five books composed by him. 29 For not the

Ἐπακολουθήσει δὲ καὶ ἕτερος οὐχ ὁ τυχὼν κίνδυνος τοῖς ψευδῶς προειληφόσιν εἰδέναι τὸ τοῦ ἀντιχρίστου ὄνομα· εἰ γὰρ ἄλλο μὲν οὗτοι δοκοῦσιν, ἄλλο δὲ ἐκεῖνος ἔχων ἐλεύσεται, ῥᾳδίως ἐξαπατηθήσονται παρ' αὐτοῦ, ὡς μηδέπω παρόντος ἐκείνου ὃν φυλάσσεσθαι προσήκει. 25 Ἀσφαλέστερον οὖν καὶ ἀκινδυνότερον τὸ περιμένειν τὴν ἔκβασιν τῆς προφητείας ἢ τὸ καταστοχάζεσθαι καὶ ὑπομαντεύεσθαι ὀνόματα τὰ τυχόντα, πολλῶν ὀνομάτων εὑρεθῆναι δυναμένων ἐχόντων τὸν προειρημένον ἀριθμόν, καὶ οὐδὲν ἧττον μενεῖ αὕτη ἡ ζήτησις· εἰ γὰρ πολλά ἐστι τὰ εὑρισκόμενα ὀνόματα ἔχοντα τὸν ἀριθμόν, ποῖον ἐξ αὐτῶν φορέσει ὁ ἐρχόμενος ζητηθήσεται. Ὅτι δὲ οὐ δι' ἀπορίαν ὀνομάτων 26 Ἡμεῖς γ' οὖν οὐκ ἀποκινδυνεύομεν περὶ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ ἀντιχρίστου ἀποφαινόμενοι βεβαιωτικῶς· εἰ γὰρ ἔδει ἀναφανδὸν ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ κηρύττεσθαι τοὔνομα αὐτοῦ, δι' ἐκείνου ἂν ἐρρέθη τοῦ καὶ τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν ἑωρακότος. Οὐδὲ γὰρ πρὸ πολλοῦ χρόνου ἑωράθη, ἀλλὰ σχεδὸν ἐπὶ τῆς ἡμετέρας γενεᾶς, πρὸς τῷ τέλει τῆς ∆ομετιανοῦ ἀρχῆς. 27 Αἱ ψυχαὶ ἀπέρχονται εἰς τὸν τόπον τὸν ὡρισμένον αὐταῖς ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ κἀκεῖ μέχρι τῆς ἀναστάσεως φοιτῶσι περιμένουσαι τὴν ἀνάστασιν· ἔπειτα ἀπολαβοῦσαι τὰ σώματα καὶ ὁλοκλήρως ἀναστᾶσαι, τουτέστι σωματικῶς, καθὼς καὶ ὁ Κύριος ἀνέστη, οὕτως ἐλεύσονται εἰς τὴν ὄψιν τοῦ Θεοῦ. 28 Ταῦτα δὲ καὶ Παπίας ὁ Ἰωάννου μὲν ἀκουστής, Πολυκάρπου δὲ ἑταῖρος γεγονώς, ἀρχαῖος ἀνήρ, ἐγγράφως ἐπιμαρτυρεῖ ἐν τῇ τετάρτῃ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ βιβλίων· ἔστι γὰρ αὐτῷ πέντε βιβλία συντεταγμένα. 29 Οὐ γὰρ ἡ
