to leap away from the final thanksgiving and to depart homeward; which itself would be a sign of great contempt. What are you doing, O man? With Christ present, the angels standing by, this awesome table set forth, your brothers still being initiated into the mysteries, do you yourself abandon them and leap away? And indeed when you are invited to a supper, even if you are satisfied beforehand, you do not dare to depart yourself before your friends while the others are reclining; but here, while the awesome mysteries of Christ are being celebrated, while the sacred rite is still taking place, you abandon everything in the middle and depart? And how are these things worthy of pardon? Or of what defense? Do you wish me to say whose work they are doing who depart before the completion, and do not offer 49.371 the thanksgiving hymns at the end of the table? Perhaps what is about to be said is burdensome, but nevertheless it is necessary that it be said on account of the indifference of the many. When Judas partook of the last supper on that final night, while all the others were reclining, he himself leaped up and went out. Therefore, these also imitate him, who leap away before the final thanksgiving. For if he had not gone out, he would not have become a traitor; if he had not left his fellow disciples, he would not have perished; if he had not torn himself away from the flock, the wolf would not have found him alone, and devoured him; if he had not separated himself from the shepherd, he would not have been captured by the beast. For this very reason, he went out with the Jews, but they went out with the Master after singing a hymn. Do you see that the final prayer after the sacrifice is according to that type? And now, beloved, let us consider these things, let us reflect on these things, fearing the judgment that lies upon this. He shares His flesh with you; 49.372 but you do not even repay Him with words, nor do you give thanks for what you have received, but while enjoying bodily food you turn to prayer after the table, yet when partaking of spiritual food that surpasses all creation both visible and invisible, you, being a man and of humble nature, do not remain to give thanks both in words and in deeds? And how are these things not worthy of the ultimate punishment? I say these things, not so that you might only praise, nor that you might make a disturbance and shout, but so that at the proper time, remembering these words, you may show the appropriate good order. They are called Mysteries, and they are; and where there are mysteries, there is much silence. Therefore with much silence, with much good order, with appropriate reverence, let us approach this sacred sacrifice, so that we may draw God to greater goodwill, and may cleanse our soul, and may obtain the eternal good things; of which may it be granted to all of us to obtain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, and power, and worship, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
