let us pray, that we will be of the same portion as those who, in the virtue of their age, were separated from life; and that when we have departed there, we will not see our own children in rest, while we ourselves are in unbearable punishment.
For all the infants who were separated before the defilement and corruption of this troublesome and much-lamented flesh, utter such voices to their parents, if not in words, yet in deeds: Do not weep for us, fathers, gaining nothing by it; for you wished to have us with you in this vain life, where all things are joyless and painful, where all things are faithless and unstable, where nothing is lasting or certain; but our Master and God, having loved us, as from the mouth of a lion, so snatched us from this vain life; as roses from thorns, so separating us from the sins of this 60.730 age; as dearest lambs, so the good shepherd set us apart from you, as from darkness into light. And we live in the land of the living, where all things are calm and without strife, where all things are bright and pleasing to God, where no one does wrong nor is tyrannized, where there is no sin nor darkness, where there is unapproachable light and unspeakable joy, where there is no pain nor tears, where there is no worry nor care, no groaning nor wailing, but only God being praised and glorified.
The holy angels peacefully separated us from the body; we passed by the principalities and the powers of the air without harm; for we had good guides. For they did not find in us what they were seeking, nor did they see in us what they were hoping for. They saw the body without spot, and they were ashamed; they saw the soul innocent and pure, and they were put to shame; they saw the tongue without spot and pure and blameless, and they were muzzled; we passed by, and we made them of no account; we passed through them, and we sang over them: The snare is broken, and we are delivered. Blessed be God, who has not given us as prey to their teeth. Wherefore also the angels who met us rejoiced, the just greeted us, the holy were delighted, saying: Welcome, lambs of Christ. The delight of paradise was opened to us, the bosom of Abraham was shown to us; for the Master received us favorably; he uttered a cheerful voice to us; he looked upon us with a cheerful eye; wherefore he also inscribed us in the book of life. For we said to a man-loving Judge: O Lord, righteous Judge, you have deprived us of earthly things, do not deprive us of heavenly things; you have separated us from our parents, do not separate us from the saints; we have the seal of your baptism intact, we have brought our body spotless to you because of our great infancy. Therefore, do not begrudge us our blameless salvation before its time, nor weep, that we have been translated from the worse to the better, since we have received incorruptible things instead of corruptible things. We sing hymns with angels, we dance with the saints; but we also intercede for you who are in sin; we were numbered with the infants who were slain by Herod for Christ; we rejoice with the sons of Job. Therefore, do not be anxious for us, but rather weep for yourselves; for consider the defense you will make for your own end; and as knowing and firmly believing, that our Master chose us for our benefit, and placed us in the portion of those who are saved, whenever young and incorrupt children from you arrive here to us, rejoice and be glad, and sing with the righteous Job: The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; as it seemed good to the Lord, so it has come to pass; may the name of the Lord be blessed from now and unto the age of ages. Amen.
