to the prophets, in these last days has spoken to us in a Son. And elsewhere it says, that the Son speaks: If you seek proof, it says, of Christ speaking in me. But the Son said it was the Spirit who speaks in the apostles, When, he says, they deliver you up to the councils, do not be anxious how or what you are to speak; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to speak. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. And at one time the Apostle says that the bodies of the faithful are a temple of the Holy Spirit, at another that their members are members of Christ, at another that they themselves are a temple of the Father: For you, he says, are the temple of the living God, as God said: I will dwell in them, and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people; and, If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him. And again: Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Holy Spirit dwells in you? For if anyone is a temple of the Spirit, this one is a temple of the Son and of the Father; for where the Spirit of God dwells, there God dwells. And, As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. Similarly also concerning the Spirit it says that It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail. And to the Corinthians Paul writes: But the Spirit gives life. You see that whatever are works of the Father, these Scripture says are of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; as also the Apostle taught, saying: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of 1009 services, and the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. Having said, therefore, that the Father is the one who empowers all things in everyone, a little later he says that the Holy Spirit is the one empowering all things in everyone. All these, he says, are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. And when the blessed Paul teaches concerning the Holy Spirit, that the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance, David says the Lord is the inheritance: For the Lord, he says, is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup. And elsewhere he says: I cried to you, O Lord; I said, You are my hope, my portion in the land of the living. But Jeremiah says that He who formed all things, he is the inheritance of Jacob, the Lord is his name. Therefore, while the prophets say the Lord is the inheritance of the saints, Paul said the Holy Spirit is the inheritance: In whom, he says, also having believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance; as also the face of Moses was sealed with the Holy Spirit when he received the law from God, and none of the sons of Israel could gaze at him; for the light of the Lord's face was marked upon him; as also it is written in the Gospel: Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. For God is light; and similarly also the Son is light, because he is of the same substance of the true light, as also Isaiah says: And the light of Israel will be as a fire, and will sanctify him in a burning flame. And in the Gospel John the Baptist says concerning the Lord: He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. And elsewhere it speaks of the Lord who sanctifies. I am the Lord who sanctifies them. And when Scripture calls God fire: Our God is a consuming fire, similarly it also speaks concerning the Holy Spirit: that there appeared to the apostles tongues as of fire, distributed, and rested on each one of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. For as many as bear the Spirit of God, bear light; and those who bear light are clothed with Christ; and those clothed with Christ have put on the Father. For this 1012 corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. For those who bear the Spirit of God bear incorruption; and incorruption is God. And when David says: Many are saying, "Who will show us some good?" concerning the Holy Spirit
