And having taken it, he immediately showed him the same sayings were Nestorius's, and in which of his discourses they are found.
THEOD. God knows, brother, the patriarch gave me these usages; but behold, some you said were Apollinarius's; and others, Nestorius's.
And having brought forward the usage of Saint Cyril which says: One and cognate, and through both displaying activity,0149 he said:
THEOD. What do you say to these things? MAX. There are some who have shown it in truth to have been placed as an addition in the interpretation of the Gospel, which was made from 15Γ_032 this holy Father, by Timothy Aelurus. But let it be his, as you say. Let us therefore examine the meaning of the patristic sayings, and we will know the truth.
THEOD. I do not permit this to be done; for you must accept the plain sayings.
[MAX. Tell me the difference, I beseech you, between plain sayings and complex ones.
THEOD. So that you accept the saying as it is, and do not scrutinize its meaning.] MAX. Clearly you are introducing new laws, foreign to the Church, even concerning sayings.
If, according to you, one must not scrutinize the sayings of the Scriptures and of the Fathers, we cast out all of Scripture, the Old and the New. For we have heard David saying: Blessed are they that search his testimonies, they will seek him with their whole heart; as no one is able to seek God without scrutiny. And again: Give me understanding, and I will search thy law, and I will keep it with my whole heart; as scrutiny leads to the knowledge of the law, and knowledge with longing persuades the worthy to keep it in their heart, through the fulfillment of the holy commandments contained in it. And again: Thy testimonies are wonderful, therefore my soul has searched them. And why does the proverbial word want us to scrutinize parables and riddles and dark sayings? And why does the Lord, speaking in parables, want the disciples to understand, teaching the meaning of the parables? And why, commanding, "Search the scriptures," as they testify about him? And what does Peter, the chief of the apostles, wish to teach, saying, "Concerning which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently"? And what of Paul, the divine apostle, saying: "If our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing," "whose minds the god 15Γ_034 of this age has blinded," "lest the light of the knowledge of Christ should shine on them"? As it seems, you wish us to be likened to the Jews, who with plain sayings, as you say, that is, with the letter alone as if having buried their mind in some rubbish, fell away from the truth, having the veil on their hearts, so as not to understand the Lord Spirit, which is hidden in the letter, about which it says: "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life." Let my lord be assured, that I cannot bear to accept a saying without the meaning contained in it, lest I become a manifest Jew.
14. THEOD. And Theodosius, having heard this, said: We ought to speak of one hypostatic energy of Christ.
MAX. Let us consider the evil born from this, and let us flee this foreign saying; for it belongs only to polytheistic heretics.
For if we say the one energy of Christ is hypostatic, and the Son 0152 is not concurrent in hypostasis with the Father and the Spirit, it is clear that neither in the hypostatic
