the blessed Paul said: “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” What he says is this: The purpose, he says, of the law was to justify the nature of men; but it was unable to do this, not through its own weakness, but because of the indolence of its hearers; for being prone to the pleasure of the flesh, they fled the labor of the law's precepts, and yielded to the sensual pleasures of the body; for this reason, he says, God of all, sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, that is, in human nature, but free from sin, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, exposing its injustice, because it subjected the one who was blameless and free from sin to the penalties of sinners; not to justify the man whom he assumed has he done these things, but so that, he says, the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the beneficence of our Savior extends to the whole nature of men; because just as with the forefather Adam, we both shared in the curse, and all of us have come under death just as he did, so also we make the victory of Christ the Savior our own, and we will partake of the glory, and we will enjoy the kingdom together. And the blessed Paul is a witness to these things, recalling both the old and the new, and showing the righteousness of our Savior to be the accomplished abolition of the former things. 12. Just as we shared in the death of Adam, so also in the life of the Lord. “For if,” he says, “by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.” And a little later: “Therefore, as through one transgression came condemnation upon all men, so also through one act of righteousness came justification of life; for as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so also by the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.” These things he also teaches more clearly in the Epistle to the Corinthians, saying: “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” From which it is clear that our victory is the victory of our Savior; for the defeat of our forefather became a common defeat; 75.1437 and it is necessary, just as we shared in the common lot with him, so we must enjoy together the good things with the one who was taken up from us, but was crowned for us; wherefore also the divine Apostle said that, “Whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren; and whom he predestined, these he also called; and whom he called, these he also justified; and whom he justified, these he also glorified.” And elsewhere he says: “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” And elsewhere: “If we endure, we shall also reign with him.” On behalf of our entire nature, therefore, God the Word of God took up our first-fruits, so that having led it through every virtue, he might challenge the adversary to a wrestling match, and show the athlete to be invincible; and might crown this one, and proclaim the other's defeat, and prepare all to be confident against him; wherefore in the holy Gospels he said, at one time: “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven;” and at another: “Unless one enters into the house of the strong man, and the
