These again are the 18 heresies of the second book, but the first tome. 3.1 The following are also in the second tome of the same second book, being the fifth according to the aforementioned numbering, in which are five heresies, as follows: 65. Paulianists, from Paul of Samosata who became bishop of Antioch the great. This one practically asserts that Christ was non-existent, having fashioned him as a spoken word, and that he exists from Mary onwards, having what was said about him in the divine scriptures as a pre-announcement, but not pre-existing, but having come into being from Mary onwards through the incarnate presence. 66. Manichaeans, also called Acouanites, the disciples of Mani the Persian, who say Christ existed in appearance only, and they worship the sun and the moon, praying to stars and powers and demons, introducing two principles, an evil and a good, which are eternal; and that Christ appeared in semblance and suffered in semblance; blaspheming the old testament and the God who spoke in it, and defining that not the whole world, but a part of it, has come from God. 67. Hieracites, from Hieracas of Leontopolis in Egypt, a certain exegete, who deny the resurrection of the flesh, but use the old and new testament, and who forbid marriage completely, accepting monks and 3.2 virgins and the continent and widowers. And that children not yet come of age do not partake of the kingdom because they have not striven. 68. Melitians, those in Egypt, being a schism but not a heresy. Not praying with those who lapsed in the persecution, but now having joined the Arians. 69. Arians, also called Ariomanites, who say the Son of God is a creature and the Holy Spirit a creature of a creature, asserting that the Savior took only flesh from Mary and not a soul. And this Arius was a presbyter of Alexander, bishop of Alexandria. This is also the recapitulation of the five heresies of the second book, of the second tome, being the fifth from the beginning of the sequence. 3.230 The following are also in the first tome of the third book, being the sixth tome according to the number we mentioned before, in which are seven heresies along with the schisms, as follows: 70. The insubordination and schism of the Audians, but not a heresy. These have a well-ordered conduct and life, and in all things hold the faith as the catholic church, and most of them live in monasteries. And they use many apocryphal books to excess. But they do not pray with us, blaming our bishops, calling them wealthy and other things. And they celebrate Passover in a particular way, when the Jews celebrate it. They also have something peculiar and contentious, very rigidly interpreting "according to the image." 71. Photinians. This Photinus, being from Sirmium, still travels about even now, who held the same opinions as Paul of Samosata. But they differ from him in some respect, and they too assert that Christ is from Mary onwards. 72. Marcellians, from Marcellus of Ancyra in Galatia. This one was renowned in the beginning for thinking similarly to Sabellius. But having come forward to make a defense many times and having defended himself in writing, he was accused by many of persisting in the same things. But perhaps having repented he may have corrected himself, or his disciples did. For concerning him and concerning the
