CHAPTER 1. If you are diligent in prayer, prepare yourself for the assaults of demons, and steadfastly endure the scourges from them; for they will come upon you like wild beasts, and will afflict your whole body.
CHAPTER 2. Prepare yourself like an experienced athlete, and if you suddenly see a vision, not to be shaken, and if a sword is drawn against you, or a torch held to your face, not to be disturbed, and if some hideous and bloody form, let not your soul fall at all, but stand confessing your good confession, and you will more easily prevail over your enemies.
CHAPTER 3. He who endures the grievous things will also attain the joyous, and he who perseveres in the unpleasant will not lack the pleasant.
CHAPTER 4. See that the wicked demons do not deceive you through some vision; but be attentive, turning to prayer, and beseech God, so that, if the thought is from Him, He Himself might enlighten you, but if not, He might swiftly drive the deceiver away from you, and take courage, for the dogs will not stand, when you use fiery intercession to God; for immediately, being scourged invisibly and unseen by the power of God, they will be driven far away.
CHAPTER 5. It is right that you should not be ignorant of this deceit, that at times the demons divide themselves, and if you seem to seek help, the rest enter in angelic forms, driving out the first ones, so that you might be deceived by them, in the thought that they are supposedly holy angels.
CHAPTER 6. Take great care for humility, and the insolence of demons will in no way lay hold of your soul, and no scourge will come near your dwelling, for he will command his angels concerning you to guard you, and they will invisibly drive away from you all the opposing energy.
CHAPTER 7. He who is diligent in pure prayer will hear noises and crashes and voices and torments from demons, but he will not fall, nor will he betray his 79.1189 thought, saying to God: I will fear no evil, for you are with me, and the like.
CHAPTER 8. In time of such temptations, use brief and intense prayer.
CHAPTER 9. If the demons threaten you, to appear suddenly from the air, and to terrify you, and to seize your mind, or like beasts to harm your flesh, do not be frightened by them, nor take any notice at all of their threat; for they frighten you, testing whether you pay them any attention, or whether you have utterly despised them, or whether you stand in prayer before God the almighty, creator, and provider of all.
CHAPTER 100. Why do you stand so irrationally before him, as to have passed over his insurmountable fear, and to be terrified of gnats and beetles? Or have you not heard the one who says: "You shall fear the Lord your God?" and again: "At the face of whose power all things shudder and tremble?" and so forth.
CHAPTER 101. Just as bread is food for the body, and virtue for the soul, so also is spiritual prayer food for the mind.
CHAPTER 102. Do not pray like a Pharisee, but like a tax collector in the holy place of prayer, so that you too may be justified by the Lord.
CHAPTER 103. Strive not to pray against anyone in your prayer, so that you do not tear down what you are building, making your prayer an abomination.

Αʹ.
