around her, both family and strangers giving farewell gifts; and the assent of an aged mother, and the tearing of a soul jealous of her departure, and the love of all mixed with anguish, some longing for what they might hear, a kindling of memory, others for what they might say, but no one daring. And silent the tears, and the pang of grief incurable (for it did not seem right to honor with lamentations one departing in such a way), but a deep silence, and death a kind of rite. 35.816 But she, breathless and motionless, and voiceless, in appearance, and the silence of her body seemed a paralysis, as if the organs of speech were already dead, because of the departure of that which moved them. But when the shepherd, who carefully watched all her ways, perceived her lips moving gently, because of the wonder in all things, and placed his ears to her lips (for he had the confidence both from her character and from his sympathy), you yourself have related the mystery of that stillness, what and of what kind it was; no one will disbelieve your account. The whispered sound was a psalm, and the words were the departure verses of a psalm; but if the truth must be told, it was a testimony of the confidence with which she departed. And blessed is he who rests with those words: In peace I will both lie down and sleep. These things were both sung for you, most beautiful of women, and came to pass; and the psalm was the event, and with her departure the funeral oration; O you who have found peace beautifully from your sufferings, and who has received the sleep owed to the beloved in addition to the common sleep, as is fitting for one who both lived and departed in the words of piety.

XXIII. I know well, therefore, that your present state is better and far more precious than what is seen, the sound of festival, the choir of angels, the heavenly order, the vision of glory, and the illumination of the most high Trinity, both other and more pure and more perfect, no longer fleeing the mind which is a prisoner and distracted by the senses, but being wholly seen and apprehended by the whole mind, and flashing upon our souls with the whole light of the Godhead. May you enjoy all those things of which, while yet on earth, you had the emanations because of the genuineness of your inclination toward them. And if you have any care for our affairs, and this is a gift from God to holy souls, to be sensible of such things, receive also our oration in place of and before many funeral rites, which we have delivered for Caesarius before you, and for you after him, since we have been reserved for the funeral orations of siblings. But whether anyone will honor us after you with the same, I cannot say; but may we be honored only with the honor that is in God, both sojourning and dwelling 35.817 in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory, and to the Father with the Holy Spirit for ever. Amen.
