He was corporally fashioned as an image, having a spiritual origin, but taking on a bodily form. 45.4 Wherefore also Scripture most mystically designated him; "Behold," for it says, "a man, his name is the East," East as in spirit, but man as in body; "For the Spirit of the Lord shall come upon you and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you; wherefore also that which is born holy shall be called the Son of the Most High"; and the birth being paradoxical and divine, rightly also the spirit wondered, saying: "Who shall declare his generation?" 46.1 And there being four principal names of the Godhead, by which the divine spirit is especially believed—Lordship and Godhead, Sonship and eternal kingdom—see that he was honored to receive not only these virtues and glories. And first, indeed, see his Lord. "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand." You see his Lord from the Lord, see also his son; "He shall call me father, and I will make him my firstborn," and; "You are my Son, today I have begotten you; ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance." You see his son and firstborn and only-begotten, see also God; "Tall men shall cross over to you and shall pray in you and shall worship in you and shall follow bound in fetters, for you are God, because God is in you." You have seen his God, see also his eternal king; "Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom; you have loved righteousness and hated iniquity. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions." You have seen his king, see with the king also the Lord of hosts; "Lift up your gates, you rulers, and be lifted up, you everlasting gates, and the king of glory shall come in. Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the king of glory." You see with his king also the Lord of hosts, see from his superabundance also the eternal high priest; "The Lord has sworn and will not repent: You are a priest forever."
46.2 But if also Lord and God and son and king and Lord of
hosts and eternal high priest, when he wishes "he is also a man, and who shall know him?" But the "also a man" clearly and pre-existently means that he is also God. And lest, according to the opinions of men, he be thought to have visited the earth as a self-generated and unbegotten phantom or spirit, hear of him also becoming a child; "Hear now, O house of David: Is it a small thing for you to weary men, and how do you weary the Lord? The Lord himself gives you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," and; "I would that they were burned with fire; for unto us a child is born, whose government is upon his shoulder, and his name is called angel of great counsel, wonderful counsellor, mighty God, prince of peace, father of the age to come." 47.1 Indeed, both God and man, this great Jesus visited us, let no one disbelieve, and a governing spirit was contained by a human body.
47.2 For Adam contained the first mystical breath of the Father while still
being earth and clay, for the divine spirit is not harmed by being joined to the body by the will of God; but if the first dust contained the sacred spirit, an ensouled body contained the immortal life of Christ. 47.3 If, then, only a spirit visited, enslaved to sin and to death, the great visitation of the body would thus have been superfluous, with neither sin nor death having been conquered; but it was necessary both for sin to be destroyed and for the body to be set free. 47.4 And for this reason "he committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth." 48.1 He therefore the

εἰκόνα σωματικῶς ἐμορφοῦτο, πνευματικὴν μὲν ἔχων τὴν ἀνατολήν, σωματικὴν δὲ προσλαμβάνων τὴν μόρφωσιν. 45.4 ∆ιὸ καὶ μυστικώτατα αὐτὸν ἡ γραφὴ ἐπεσημήνατο· "Ἰδοὺ" γάρ φησιν "ἀνήρ, ἀνατολὴ ὄνομα αὐτῷ", ἀνατολὴ μὲν ὡς ἐν πνεύματι, ἀνὴρ δὲ ὡς ἐν σώματι· "Πνεῦμα γὰρ Κυρίου ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ δύναμις ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι· διὸ καὶ τὸ γεν νώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται υἱὸς ὑψίστου"· παρα δόξου δὲ καὶ θείας οὔσης τῆς γενέσεως, εἰκότως καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τεθαύμακε λέγον· "Τὴν γενεὰν αὐτοῦ τίς διηγήσεται;" 46.1 Τεσσάρων δὲ ὄντων τῶν τῆς θεότητος ἡγεμονικῶν ὀνομάτων, δι' ὧν μάλιστα τὸ θεῖον πνεῦμα πιστεύεται, κυριότητος καὶ θεότητος, υἱότητος καὶ βασιλείας αἰωνίου, ὅρα μὴ μόνον ταύτας τὰς ἀρετὰς καὶ δόξας λαβεῖν ἐτιμήθη. Καὶ πρῶτόν γε ὅρα αὐτοῦ τὸν Κύριον. "Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου· κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου". Ὁρᾷς αὐτοῦ τὰ παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου τὸν Κύριον, ὅρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ· "Αὐτός με ἐπικαλέσεται πατέρα κᾀγὼ θήσομαι αὐτὸν πρωτότοκον", καί· "Υἱός μου εἶ σύ, ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε· αἴτησαι παρ' ἐμοῦ καὶ δώσω σοι ἔθνη τὴν κληρονομίαν σου". Ὁρᾷς αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱὸν καὶ πρωτότοκον καὶ μονογενῆ, ὅρα καὶ τὸν Θεόν· "Ἄνδρες ὑψηλοὶ ἐπὶ σὲ διαβήσονται καὶ ἐν σοὶ προσεύξονται καὶ ἐν σοὶ προσκυνήσουσι καὶ ἀκο λουθήσουσιν ἐν χειροπέδαις δεδεμένοι, σὺ γὰρ εἶ ὁ Θεός, ὅτι ἐν σοὶ ὁ Θεός ἐστιν". Εἶδες αὐτοῦ τὸν θεόν, ἴδε αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν βασιλέα αἰώνιον· "Ὁ θρόνος σου, ὁ Θεός, εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος· ῥάβδος εὐθύτητος ἡ ῥάβδος τῆς βασιλείας σου· ἠγάπησας δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἐμίσησας ἀνομίαν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἔχρισέ σε ὁ Θεὸς ὁ Θεός σου ἔλαιον ἀγαλλιάσεως παρὰ τοὺς μετόχους σου". Ἑώρακας αὐτοῦ τὸν βασι λέα, ὅρα μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τὸν τῶν δυνάμεων Κύριον· "Ἄρατε πύλας οἱ ἄρχοντες ὑμῶν καὶ ἐπάρθητε πύλαι αἰώνιοι, καὶ εἰσελεύσεται ὁ βασιλεὺς τῆς δόξης. Τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῆς δόξης; Κύριος τῶν δυνάμεων αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῆς δόξης". Ὁρᾷς αὐτοῦ μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τὸν τῶν δυνάμεων Κύριον, ἴδε ἐκ περιόντων αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν ἀρχιερέα αἰώνιον· "Ὤμοσε Κύριος καὶ οὐ μεταμεληθήσεται· σὺ ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα".
46.2 Εἰ δὲ καὶ Κύριος καὶ Θεὸς καὶ υἱὸς καὶ βασιλεὺς καὶ Κύριος τῶν
δυνάμεων καὶ ἀρχιερεὺς αἰώνιος, ὅτε θέλει "καὶ ἄνθρωπός ἐστι καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν;" Τὸ δὲ "καὶ ἄνθρωπος" δηλόνοτι καὶ προϋπαρχόντως ὅτι καὶ Θεός. Καὶ ἵνα μὴ κατὰ τὰς τῶν ἀνθρώπων δόξας αὐτόματον καὶ χωρὶς γενέσεως φάσμα ἢ πνεῦμα τῇ γῇ ἐπιδεδημηκέναι δόξῃ, ἄκουε αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ παιδίον γενόμενον· "Ἀκούσατε δὴ οἶκος ∆αυίδ· μὴ μικρὸν ὑμῖν ἀγῶνα παρέχειν ἀνθρώποις, καὶ πῶς Κυρίῳ παρέχετε ἀγῶνα; ∆ίδωσι Κύριος αὐτὸς ὑμῖν σημεῖον· ἰδοὺ ἡ παρθένος ἐν γαστρὶ λήψεται καὶ τέξεται υἱὸν καὶ καλέσουσι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐμμανουήλ", καί· "Ἤθελον εἰ ἐγενήθησαν πυρίκαυστοι· διότι παιδίον ἐγεννήθη ἡμῖν, οὗ ἡ ἀρχὴ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὤμου αὐτοῦ, καὶ καλεῖται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μεγάλης βουλῆς ἄγγελος, θαυμαστὸς σύμ βουλος, Θεὸς ἐξουσιαστής, ἄρχων εἰρήνης, πατὴρ τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος". 47.1 Θεὸς μὲν δὴ καὶ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος ὁ μέγας Ἰησοῦς ἐπεδήμησεν ἡμῖν, ἀπιστείτω μηδείς, καὶ πνεῦμα ἡγεμονικὸν ἐχωρήθη ὑπὸ ἀνθρώπου σώματος.
47.2 Καὶ γὰρ τὴν πρώτην τοῦ πατρὸς πνοὴν τὴν μυστικὴν ἐχώρησεν Ἀδὰμ ἔτι
γῆ καὶ πηλὸς ὤν, οὐ γὰρ βλάπτεται τὸ θεῖον πνεῦμα τῷ σώματι βουλῇ Θεοῦ συνῆφθαι· εἰ δὲ ὁ πρῶτος χοῦς τὸ ἱερὸν ἐχώρει πνεῦμα, ἐψυχώμενον σῶμα τὴν ἀθάνατον Χριστοῦ ἐχώρησε ζωήν. 47.3 Εἰ μὲν οὖν πνεῦμα μόνον ἐπεδήμησε τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ καὶ τῷ θανάτῳ δεδουλώμενον, περισσὴ ἂν ἦν οὕτως ἡ μεγάλη τοῦ σώματος ἐπιδημία, μήτε τῆς ἁμαρτίας μήτε τοῦ θανάτου νενικημένου· ἔδει δὲ καὶ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἀναιρεθῆναι καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἐλευθερωθῆναι. 47.4 Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο "αὐτὸς ἁμαρ τίαν οὐκ ἐποίησεν οὐδὲ δόλος εὑρέθη ἐν τῷ στό ματι αὐτοῦ". 48.1 Αὐτὸς οὖν τὸ
