Not because we men, when we read prophets, apostles, Gospels, do not carry the memory in our heart without a book, does God need a book; the source of memory does not need a book. There the virtuous works are written, there the wicked ones are written. Do not fear the pre-judgment; for even if your wicked works are recorded, they can be blotted out by good works; just as again if someone's name is written down for piety, but he denies it by his ways, the fact that it was written is not a pre-judgment; for it is wiped away. And so that you may learn that one who was written for piety is wiped away, and cast out for negligence, David says concerning the Jews who were once written, and later blotted out: "Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous." Just as the unbelievers are blotted out, so are the faithful written. Hear Paul saying: Greet our beloved brothers, and the yokefellow with Clement and the rest of the fellow-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Let us fear that book; be afraid, lest your sins be recorded; consider how you are disposed before a judge, if the records are opened against you before a ruler, convicting you of your injustice, exposing your madness; consider how great the fear, how great the trembling, how the limbs are shaken, how everything within boils up, when a man is judging. But if there is so much fear when a man is judging, who will be able to describe that fear, in which the Master of all is about to judge the world? We say these things, not to frighten, but to make you sober. Let not money be preferred to Christ; let not injustice and greed be preferred to God. Have you heard from the things said before, that well-being lasts only until the grave? These things were our exercise yesterday. Why do you wait for the grave to be the end of your life? Wait for the grave to be the end of your life, so that through the present one you may be ferried over to the one to come; love the works of righteousness; the grave it is, in which we are dissolved, the grave in which the earthly vessel disappears. Let us flee the coming judgment, brothers, I beg you. It is necessary to say these things while being moved, and to hear them while being moved; let us take up a desire for righteousness. See how the prophet cries out: Woe is me for the day of the Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. If a prophet trembles when he remembers the day, shall we who are liable for countless sins remember it without fear? Let us entreat the judge through repentance, let us blot out our sins, let us fear that fearful voice that says, "Whoever denies me before men (not the one denying with words, but the one denying by his ways, denies), I also will deny him before my Father. Whoever confesses me, I also will confess him before my Father." If the words, when examined, are fearful, are not the deeds, when seen, more fearful? Consider, brother, the judge of the world sitting, angels standing by, archangels attending as a bodyguard, the Cherubim glorifying, the super-cosmic powers, the super-heavenly hosts, and among all these, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, evangelists, martyrs, and the kings in the world, rulers, judges, potentates, the rich, the poor, private citizens, the wise, all these standing before the judgment seat, and in the presence of so many heavenly and earthly witnesses, the judge speaking 59.608, and denying those who are alien before the Father: For I will deny him, he says, who denies me, before my Father. ϛʹ. Consider him saying: "Father, this one has scorned my faith, this one has persecuted my own, this one has insulted my Church, this one has exposed my own to public shame, this one has spit upon my word, this one has trampled upon my preaching." And he says these things, not teaching a Father who is ignorant, but exposing the enemy by the accusation. Consider the judge speaking, when he calls the glorious of the earth bound in handcuffs ("To bind their kings with fetters," he says, "and their nobles with iron handcuffs"), those standing by with fear
