the strength given to us. And the lawless and the sinners shall be burned up together, and there will be no one to quench it. For when God punishes, who is the one who delivers? Thus also through the great Moses he said: 'I will kill and I will make alive, I will strike and I will heal; and there is no one who will deliver from my hands.' Knowing these things, then, it is fitting to fear and to tremble; for 'it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God'. The prophet, however, concluded the first vision here; but let us give a little rest to those who will read this book, sending up glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
2 VOLUME 2 21The word that came to Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judea and concerning
Jerusalem. In the reign of Uzziah—for in it he began his prophecy—he was also ordered to convey these words, not, however, at the same time; for which reason he used another preface again. 2That in the last days the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest, and the house of God on the tops of the mountains, and it will be exalted above the hills. He foretells the conspicuous and visible nature of piety, and that the worship of idols will be extinguished, but the house of God will receive the fitting reverence from all. For by the mountains and the hills he indicates not only the height but also the error that once prevailed in them; for on the high peaks and the lofty hills they raised temples to idols and planted groves and offered them worship through sacrifices. But after the epiphany of our Savior, their falsehood has been refuted, |99 b| and the beauty of the truth has been shown, and we see the fulfillment of the prophecy. He calls the last days those after the Lord's epiphany. Thus also through Joel the prophet he says: 'In the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh'—and this was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost—, and the divine apostle: 'In many and various ways,' he said, 'God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son.' And all the nations shall come to it, 3and many peoples shall go, and shall say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will announce to us his way, and we will walk in it. These things have a twofold interpretation, and we see the fulfillment of both; for whether we understand Jerusalem to be the mountain of God, we see the believers running there, and from the whole inhabited world running and arriving, those who have received the preaching and have seized the blessing that sprouted from there; or whether we say the churches everywhere on land and sea are the house of God—persuaded by the divine Paul: 'For we are his house,' he says—, and thus it is possible to see the truth of the prophecy; for the church of God is conspicuous, and the nations, abandoning the impiety that once prevailed, approach it and are enlightened by it. For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4And he will judge between the nations, and will rebuke many people. I marvel at those who can bear to understand this passage differently and think that the return from Babylon is foretold through these words. For what nations ran there after the second building of the temple? And what law was given there? For the old law God gave not in Zion but on Mount Sinai. It is clear, then, that he is alluding to the new covenant, given there first to the apostles, and through them provided to all the nations. He prophesies that not only a law but also a word will go forth from there; thus he named the evangelical proclamation. For this the blessed one also teaches us
