enslaving his acquaintances by magnanimous benefactions, ruling by laws of philanthropy, and rendering his government both well-ordered and much prayed-for by all his subjects, until at length, when he had become weary after long cycles of years, God, whom he honored, crowning him with the prizes of immortality for his divine struggles, transferred him from a mortal kingdom to the unending life reserved with Himself for holy souls, 1.9.2 having raised up a threefold offspring of sons as successors to his rule. And so indeed the throne of the kingdom descended to him from his father, and by the law of nature was preserved for his children and their descendants, being prolonged for an ageless time, like some paternal inheritance. God himself, therefore, who exalted the blessed one with honors befitting God while he was still with us and adorned him at his death with special privileges from Himself, might also be his biographer, engraving the labors of his achievements on tablets of heavenly pillars for long ages. 1.10.1 But for me, though it is impossible to say anything worthy of the blessedness of the man, and silence is safe and without risk, yet it is necessary, in imitation of a mortal sketch, to dedicate this verbal portrait to the memory of the God-beloved, acquitting myself of the charge of hesitation and sloth. For I would be ashamed of myself if I did not contribute, according to my ability, even if these things be small and of little worth, to him who through his extraordinary reverence for God has honored us all. 1.10.2 And I think that my writing will be otherwise beneficial for life and necessary, encompassing the deeds of imperial magnanimity that were pleasing to God, the King of all. For is it not shameful that the memory of Nero, and of certain impious and godless tyrants far worse than he, should have found industrious writers, who, having embellished the plots of worthless dramas with elegant diction, have recorded them in voluminous histories; while we should be silent, whom God Himself has deemed worthy to meet with so great an emperor, the like of whom all time has not recorded, and to come into his sight and acquaintance and company? Wherefore it would be fitting, if for any others, for us also to proclaim to all the abundant report of good things, for whom the imitation of noble things awakens the longing for divine love. 1.10.3 For some, compiling the lives of men who are not venerable and deeds unprofitable for the improvement of morals, either through favor towards some or enmity, or perhaps even for a display of their own learning, have improperly dramatized with a pomp of eloquent words the narratives of shameful matters, becoming teachers of deeds not good but worthy to be passed over in oblivion and darkness, to those who by God's grace have had the good fortune not to share in such evils. 1.10.4 But as for me, though the style of my expression is weak when compared to the magnitude of the subjects described, may it nevertheless be brightened by the simple narration of good deeds; and the record of God-beloved narratives will afford a perusal not unprofitable, but even very beneficial for life, to those whose souls are well prepared. 1.11.1 Most, therefore, of the royal deeds of the thrice-blessed one—his engagements and battles, his heroic acts and victories and trophies over enemies, and the many triumphs he celebrated, his arrangements in time of peace for the correction of common affairs and the advantage of each individual, the enactments of laws which he composed for the benefit of his subjects' polity, and very many other contests of his royal labors, which are remembered by all—I think I will pass over, since the scope of our present undertaking requires me to speak and write only those things which relate to his God-beloved life. 1.11.2 But since even these are countless, having selected the most important of those that have come to our knowledge, and those most worthy of remembrance by those who come after us, I shall set forth the account of these very things as concisely as possible, since the time at last permits us to celebrate without hindrance and with every kind of voice him who is truly blessed; for it was not permitted to do this before now, since the command has been given not to call a man blessed before his death, because of the uncertainty of life’s vicissitudes. And let God be invoked as helper, and the Heavenly One as our fellow-worker
